Can Someone Explain Why NCAAT is the Expectation?

I am thoroughly baffled by all the discussions about making/not making the NCAAT as some deciding factor on CBB’s job. I understand that goes back to Neff’s comments, but why? Making the tournament puts you around the top-50. Do we really set the bar that low? To me, the absolute floor should be making the tournament, with the expectation being a 5-7 seed (aka top-25). Miss the tourney once, you are on the hot seat, twice, next man up. CBB-coached teams have met that expectation exactly twice in 12 years and have never exceeded it.
I understand our history is less than stellar, but that is just an excuse. That said, I would allow any new coach a fair opportunity to show we are on a trajectory to meeting those objectives. Can anyone really say we are on such a trajectory? We might be, but after 12 years, the answer is either yes or no, not might.
All this said, I also agree with the JK arguments about administration support. If the administration does not give this program the tools to required to meet those expectations, how can the coach be held responsible. You can’t expect an under-funded program to magically overachieve. It needs a recruiting budget, a quality staff, facilities, etc. If that is not happening, then the AD is failing at his job and should be held accountable.
Just my $.02.

The NCAA tourney is the only real opportunity to win it all. You at least want to be in that conversation, and it is great exposure for the University. I would guess there are a lot more viewers than what you would ever get for a regular season game.
Not sure who even cares about the NIT. In the end it’s more practice but in the grand scheme that is about all it’s good for.

Imo, your post is exactly what our expectations should be. All about consistency. Higher seeding and a clear progression is what I garnered from graham's letter. It's my understanding that Brad is getting everything he needs.

That's like asking why is it important to win your conference or make the playoffs. It's kinda the whole reason you play.

You make a compelling post but a goal without a plan is called a dream. The Cuse coach stated Miami, Pitt and WF bought their team. We already know Duke and UNCheat buys their teams. We have a basketball program at a football school with little history of success and no natural recruiting territory plus no funding in place to buy a team yet you expect to make the dance every year? Others think simply changing the HC will make all the difference and even if they know it won’t they want a change anyway.

If the only acceptable standard was to to be in the Top 30 each and every year, I have a hard time believing we could find a coach. There are too many variables in basketball to have that high a bar.

We have to be one of the Top 36 - have to be a lot higher than 50 to do that IMO. There are over 325 schools - - almost 3 times the number of football. Basketball needs to be split or field expanded(which I think they are to 128- which in most years will get most of the ACC in which is the way it should be)

Because every Clemson coach prior to Brownell except Shyatt was able to get to the tournament semi-regularly during their tenure. And they did so:
1. Without relying on the First Four tourney expansion 2. During an era when it was tougher to get in 3. During the ACC's strongest era of basketball programs
I don't think any Tiger fans expects Sweet 16 and Final 4 appearances on the regular. But making the tournament every other year is a minimum expectation.
Barnes went 3 years in a row. Purnell went 3 years in a row. Both while playing Dean Smith and Coach Rat King teams 2 and sometimes 3 times a season. Cliff Ellis took us multiple times.
Brownell has a 6 year drought on his resume, squeaking in with the play-in games, and disappointment when he did make it.
So summary, yes we expect the NCAAT.
