Can someone explain to me what Stanford Cal & SMU brings to ACC?

Other than academics.

Viewership? Because only Stanford been any good in Football and that been mediocre at best over the last 40+ years.

Numbers... trying to keep the ACC at 15 teams after the defections (whenever that might be).

This⬆️. ACC needs to maintain 15 schools
to prevent ESPN from renegotiating the TV deal. ACC pretty much knows Clemson and FSU plans.

Aug 30, 2023, 10:36 AM

Not really. The ACC network is not on standard cable packages and usually has to be purchased within a separate sports package, so only the people that want the ACC network will pay for it. Looking at some back of the napkin math, these three new teams brought in a combined 2 million viewers per week. Multiply that by the $.73 share ESPN makes for the ACC network, and multiply that by 12, and you're looking at an add of roughly $17.5 million based on the data we've got, then do a split of 50/50 between the ACC and ESPN, and you're down to $8.75 million, all before you factor in any operating costs. Now, you'll probably have more than their combined viewership sign up, but that's unquantifiable at this point.

Re: Also increased carriage fees in CA and Texas along with

Aug 30, 2023, 2:34 PM

That's not really true. For example, if someone buys a sports package to get BTN or SECN, then the ACC gets fees from that subscriber as well. If that subscriber is within the ACC's footprint, then the ACC gets a larger fee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's not accurate - all the major providers carry ACCN -

Aug 30, 2023, 5:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Also increased carriage fees in CA and Texas along with ]

for some like YoutubeTV it is in the base package for others it's not really a standalone. As in, ESPN forces it on you like in conjunction with SECN etc. There are fees already for every subscriber in those states where its either included in base or the package they are subscribing to to get some other sports channels. The difference is that when you have a team from that market, the contracts are written that the fee goes to an in-market fee. So that .73 is say tripled for example. And its not SMU, Cal, Stanford viewers, its every subscription in that state that has a package that includes ACCN which again is not a la carte offering - you get it either in base or with some combination of various sports network. So the guy that wants SECN in CA is also contributing to ACCN biz even if he doesn't watch.

This is why SEC, B10 and ACC were always at an advantage over the B12 by having their own network longterm and over the PAC12 as the PAC couldn't get all the national distributors on board. The Pac couldn't get it largely because time zone and historically unable to win over east coast due to that...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: that's not accurate - all the major providers carry ACCN -

Aug 30, 2023, 6:08 PM

While that’s true as well, we also don’t know how many people in those markets already have those add on packages for the SEC and Big 10 network. I wonder how saturated the market already is, and if the ACC network would even gain those additional 2 million households, or if they’ve already got the channels. I think that’s part of the reason ESPN is not giving additional money equal to current school payouts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the fees automatically go up by becoming in-market vs

Aug 31, 2023, 12:41 PM

currently being out of market - it would apply to all current subscriptions. ACCN is always part of same package as SEC so if you have one you are paying for the other. Pretty much the same with B10 not many places/packages where you can get 1 and not the other. The difference is for all, are you in market or out of market. The B10 adding MD and Rutgers had a lot to do with this. As for cord cutting, it doesn't matter, the streaming services have similar contracts. ACCN/SECN/BIG are all on the streaming packages together. There are only a handful of sports channels included in lower packages- ESPN, ESPN2, FS1 and NBCSN. Basically if you want any sports channel besides those, you'll be buying the ACCN whether you want it or not. I'm pretty sure it's included on more packages than even ESPNU. ESPN forces this and will continue to do so because that is part of the ACCN agreement with the league and they are 50% owners

It is not just how good they have been. Don't you think that Cal and Stanford fans across the country and people in California would like to see teams they never see? Cal v Clemson, Stanford v FSU, Cal v Miami, Stanford v North Carolina etc? There is history of those schools playing ACC schools in basketball and the same games as in football would certainly attract viewers. As for SMU, they are actually pretty good in football with 3 National Championships and Bowls 5 of the last 6 years. Same tv deal as Cal and Stanford.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Checked on SMU 3 claims of Nattys

1

Aug 29, 2023, 9:28 PM

Most people accept that 1936 was the beginning true valid Nattys

1935 there were 4 schools claiming 2 were undefeated and SMU was no, TCU also claimed it at 12-1 also

1981 if SMU was NC then Clemson must not of been

1982 Penn St 11-1 beat 11-0 Georgia in Sugar and was both AP & UPI NC SMU was 11-0-1 maybe they were they weren’t

So SMU claims seems to be as legit at UCF in 2017

Aug 29, 2023, 11:35 PM

First off, let me say I am NOT in favor of adding Sancalsmu. However, the beancounters, who seem to be keeping this alive see one thing, late-night west coast eyeballs. Now a late ACC game ends at 11:00, maybe midnight. However a late game in Cali could last to 2:00 am. Yes, there will be zombies and fratties that have caught their second wind that will watch, and would not have been watching the ACCN previously. On the off chance this thing has a life I would hope that it was a football-only membership as sending some of the olympic sports team on a west coast tour is just cruel and wasteful.

I feel like the ACC would have been better off going after a different Texas team, maybe TCU. SMU is not a good choice.

Here is what they bring:
SMU - higher ACCN rate in Texas
Stanford - higher ACCN rate in California and awesome academics
California - higher ACCN rate in California and great academics

I'm not saying it's good, but that is what they bring.

Keeping 15 teams in the conference.

Aug 30, 2023, 8:26 AM

It gives Wake and BC and Cuse, etc, the security of knowing that when Clemson and FSU leave, ESPN will still ahve to honor their TV contract and will not be able to renegotiate it to a much lower dollar level. It gives them a few more years before the plug is pulled.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This!!! ^^^^^^

Aug 30, 2023, 4:24 PM

Sheer numbers. ACC needs to avoid dropping below 15 teams when the defections occur. If they fall below that threshold, the contract will be renegotiated (downward) by ESPN. It’s being speculated that Clemson and FSU (and ?) can leverage a vote to add these teams to get some sort of concession, like an easier/cheaper/earlier exit. If all this is true and can unfold in this manner, you should want this to happen. That logic has nothing to do with whether the additional teams are “good” additions for the ACC.

Disclaimer: I just read all the crap out there and try to process it. This line of thought seems to be out there being bandied about by people a lot more connected than me - admittedly a very low bar.

Stanford is top class in Olympic sports. I know they may not bring much to the table for Football, but they are pretty competitive in most other sports.

Re: Can someone explain to me what Stanford Cal & SMU brings to ACC?

Well, SMU brings the great historical footnote of being the team that got the death penalty back in the 80's. That's unique history right there. So, that'll be great.

Stanford brings their band, which is the only band in the history of college football that helped their team lose a game.

Cal brings a stadium that is literally built on top of a major earthquake fault. So, if we attend a game out there, there's always a chance of the stadium being swallowed up by the Earth.

This is a win-win for everybody (eyes roll).

Explanations

2

Aug 30, 2023, 3:09 PM

1) An administrative & organizational attempt by ACC leadership to save face with three schools the B1G and the SEC have zero interest.
2) A short-term crutch for Notre Dame to pad their athletic schedules with prestigious academic and poor football schools.
3) An intermediate arrangement which will devolve into a cost-prohibitive and logistical nightmare for east coat schools and athletes.

Can't vouch for SMU or Standfrod but you get an outstandingly beautiful campus yet weird people in Cal.

Cal was theoretically the #1 team in the country for about 30 mins on October 13, 2007... after a huge upset by Arkansas over LSU that day, 5-0 and #2 ranked Cal was primed to take the top spot with a 4th quarter lead against Oregon State and blew it. Cal hasn't been the same since.
