Can someone clear up FSU probation?

Are they allowed to participate in the postseason for the next 2 years?
Or is the probation restricting other things?
I honestly don’t know

The probation does not include post season bans.
The most notable thing fans will see is that Alex Atkins, OL coach, cannot be on the sidelines for the first 3 games next year.

And lose 5 scholarships over the next two years? Is that right.

In addition to the two post’s above, there is also restrictions on the number of days the coaches can contact recruits

There are restrictions on that coach recruiting at all next year. No one else is affected. FSU Rise will pay 5 scholarships through NIL$ and essentially FSU will miss nothing. Except lack of OC for three games.

Again, I say, “So what?” That is zero punishment. What do you think the punishment would have been if it were us?

They wont be able to do that with the scholarships

they would be capped at 82/83 - can’t have the $ coming from somewhere else- that would be additional violations. It also put the NIL collective and FSU on notice. If they use it to offer/get players to sign then they would be subjected to much harsher penalties as they would occur while they are on probation. They could very well be looking at a ban at that point. Basically they can’t risk it now. I expect a lot more schools will go on probation for this very thing. I think some didn’t try to hide it which was stupid as the rule from the beginning said you can’t do that promise pay to induce. Some schools didn’t operate this way and all and are not offering anything for signing but just indicating if you come there, these are the types of opp that may exist etc.

.... but I know some of those restrictions were for Fall 23 so they have already been filled. I think there are some still to be filled in 24 but not sure how many. Also not sure if it is all coaches on staff or just Atkins, the OL.

I think that means 3 this year and 2 next. So, instead of 85, they can have 82 this year and 83 next.

@BrettFSU
From an unbiased standpoint, do you think this is a severe enough punishment?

Trying to be as unbiased as possible.

The violation occurred in 2022. NIL was just getting started. No one really knew what was going on on what the rules were.
Atkins drove a prospect to a dinner meeting with a guy who was goin to talk to him about anNIL deal. Atkins did not attend the meeting with the player. The meeting was with a booster. That was the violation - improper contact with a booster.
Apparently, the reason the penalty was as severe as it was was because Atkins was not truthful when first questioned by the NCAA. (It's not the crime; it's the cover-up.)
Two perspectives:
1. Nobody knew what the rules were. NCAA had basically said it was up to the conferences to govern NIL; they weren't gonna get involved in compliance. Everybody was still in the learning process and everybody was probably doing the same thing. So the penalty was too severe.
2. The problem wasn't NIL. The problem was contact with a booster. You can't have a booster use money to influence a kid to come to your school. NIL is supposed to be for kids already enrolled in school. And, Atkins lied to NCAA. If anything, the penalty was too light. (Whether or not other schools were doing it is irrelevant.)
As a Nole, I tend to believe #1. But, I can see how people could believe #2.
There are also two schools of thought about the NCAA.
1. NCAA is mad at FSU for suing ACC. The compliance director for NCAA is the former FSU AD who left on less than good terms, so he has it out for FSU.
2. The NCAA is getting ready to come down hard on several schools who are far moe guilty than FSU (Colorado, aTm, et. al.) and is using FSU as the signpost showing schools they better cooperate. And, it will give them credibility to blast Michigan with severe penalties.
I don't believe #1. And, I seriously doubt #2. I hav eno idea what the NCAA is thinking. All I know is they are consistently inconsistent.

There are also more factors that could be apart of Atkins’ actions. Maybe he knew it was early NIL and took advantage of the fact that he could use the opportunity of lack of knowledge for innocence.
That’s a heavy assumption though. You just can never know for sure.
Also, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of #2 at the bottom. #1 is just not happening. I saw someone else claim the NCAA was using some personal attack against FSU. No person in the NCAA is allowed to use personal bias.
I say the punishment you received is about right after the information I’ve seen.
I think FSU has found out the formula though.

This whole thing seems like payback for complaining about ESECPN and the committee.
I bet many other schools are doing similar things… Texas comes to mind.

It is retribution...we know this because there is currently a team that just won a national championship that was caught in a massive cheating scandal and they haven't even been punished
FYI, I don't count Harbaugh not being able to be on the sidelines for four games as an actual punishment bc he was still able to be at all practices and make the gameplan each week

Payback?
I don’t think the NCAA incorporates personal opinions into their punishment decisions.

I believe the NCAA does pick and chose who they really punish and are biased in some aspects.

That don't smell much like probation...NCAA can't government cause they don't punish...except SMU...talk about politics...head of board was the former Republican governor of Texas who came clean about everything dealing with James and Dickerson...UT never missed a beat!

You are joking right? I hope you are joking
The NCAA has been handing out disproportionate punishments for as long as I can remember . The UNC cheating scandal is one of the biggest examples I can think of but most teams would have gotten penalized into dust for what they did yet they somehow walked away scot free

No I’m not joking. The things that have created the NCAA’s bad perception is lack of consistency, complexity of the rules that they created, and the pressure to maintain their own image.
Their issues don’t lie within the category of being spiteful to programs.
They have made decisions in the past for maintaining their image. Like SMU with the death penalty. But in my opinion, Penn State with Paterno warranted death penalty. And it wasn’t given.
It’s lack of consistency. And they don’t have consistency because the rules they have are flexible.
I don’t think when you have a mass of people who are qualified and take pride in their qualification, that any of them would show personal bias. Because they would be cut off for that.
Just overall, no one is allowed to use bias toward a punishment to a sports program. There’s no conspiracy. Just simple inconsistency

Why do you think there is lack of consistency? You think it's just random why some teams are punished more harshly than others?
There is clear bias in how punishments are handed out . That really shouldn't even be up for debate .....stop being naive

Many are doing the same thing but FSU got a little careless in that they had a coach set up a meeting with the Nil booster to offer nil payment to get the player to come to FSU. The coach was not supposed to be the middle man. I believe the booster may have some probation on him.

IDK why the NCAA doesn't limit a team's NIL funding if that's what caused the violations. Hit em where it hurts.
