New Story: Another Spiers is headed to Clemson

Jan 19, 2016, 7:58 AM

Another Spiers is headed to Clemson

When Clemson fans hear the name Spiers, they immediately think of “Shortstop” Spiers – the baseball player who answered an ad in the school newspaper and became Clemson’s punter in the 1980’s.
Now, Bill “Shortstop” Spiers son, Will, is following in the footsteps of his father as he tries to become Clemson’s next great punter.

Does the punter do the kick-off after a score or is he the one who punts the ball after we don't get first and 10? I'm thinking the one who kicks the field goals is the one who does the kicks after the score...are they one and the same...please refresh my memory. Thanks!

kicking it far ain't gonna cut it.

We want and need someone who can and will kick it out of the end zone EVERY TIME.

Re: New Story: Another Spiers is headed to Clemson

Would love to know his punting average in games as well as average kickoff distance. Dan Orner is one of the best and coaches Pinion and Catanzaro. He usually charts that info. Looks like we will let two of the best kickers in the country that we recruited from the Charlotte area go elsewhere.

There are more than just two....

There's Alex Barbir out of #######, GA (Rutgers), AJ Reed out of Prattville, AL (Duke), John Young our of Mocksville, NC (West Virginia), James McCourt our of Fort Lauderdale (Illinois), Keller Farni out of Mobile, AL (South Alabama), Taylor Sheets out of Fort Mill (currently uncommitted), J.D. Dellinger out of Charlotte (Purdue), and Coby Neenan out of Dothan, AL (Tulane).

I wish this young man success!

What we also need is a philosophy which says every kick return is an offense of play and every kick is a defense of play. That way, regardless of where the kick goes, you're treating special-teams like it's just as important as first in 10. I've said it before and I'll say it now: study Beamer Ball!

I can hear my dad now. "What happened to the days when we used to just steal kickers from the soccer team?"

Re: Special Alright

Jan 19, 2016, 9:47 AM

Great, with his genes and the coaching he is receiving I am sure he will do well. Since he is his high school QB, you know he is athletic and may be good if we need a fake punt. Look forward to seeing him punt in the Valley.

Re: New Story: Another Spiers is headed to Clemson

Jan 19, 2016, 9:54 AM

I was on the soccer team way back in the day with Obed Ariri and later Donald Igwebuike ... they were good kickers indeed!

But there is so much more to kicking than power. You must know how to place the ball in certain areas and control your kick. What if you want to avoid a specific kick returner? What happens if there is an extremely strong head-wind and you need to kick it lower so it doesn't catch the wind? How are you going to perform an on-side kick if you have no finesse and no control?

Call it soccer-style bias if you will, but IMO, straight on kicking (only) is not the way to go. I know people think that kickers are "not really football players" but, at the end of the day, it does require some special skills.

Go talk to Coach Noonan and the #2 Clemson Soccer Team (National Runners-up) and see if there's someone willing and available to kick for the Tigers. :D

Kicking it with your toe

Jan 19, 2016, 10:53 AM

Anyone who understands kicking or has played soccer knows kicking it with your toe is inconsistent at best. If he wants to learn to kick it out of the endzone he'll need to use his laces. While using your toe will give you power, it leave a lot of inconsistency. You never know where the ball is going to go and the last thing we need is someone kicking it out of bounds on kickoffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Kicking it with your toe

Jan 19, 2016, 11:12 AM

Unfortunately our kickers have to be good tacklers too! Hope we can correct this special teams mess in the off season

Dad Spiers played for thirteen years in the major leagues. Not many Tigers baseballers can make that claim

Im sure he is a good kid, legacy and all, but please tell me we can do better than this. Is this some kind of sick joke? We're going to have a baseball player handle our kickoffs and punts? Go recruit a dang soccer player!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ummm, I'm sorry, what??

Jan 19, 2016, 11:40 PM

Did you even read the article? Where did you see that he was going to handle kickoffs and punts? He's a walk on. He's working on it. He hopes to be good enough to make it. And you're whining about it. I read nothing about guarantees. I read nothing about him being the only kicker that is being recruited. They didn't even recruit him. Honestly. SMH.

A walk-on might work out. I have nothing against him. It just seems like we should be able to recruit a top punter and kicker.

Ok Spiers.... Do some hot yoga like Catman did --- and a few other pro players. They swear it helped them. Get Silica at Southern Om to help you --- she really helped Chandler. Sorry for being girly but it was a step in his progress.
Plus I know Bill and Tim Parker so I'm only trying to help.
