They just have not PROVEN enough to warrant the hype. It's really more like just a cool story for the media. I actually hope they're real good, but they've done nothing to warrant the rampant speculation.

The portal doesn't automatically make anyone good or great, and certainly doesn't turn them into ACC Champs and a playoff team. All those new players is almost too much turnover for one season. Remember we were whipping their tails last year, even with the prior offensive shortcomings.

They are simply the flavor of the day. Picking Clemson does not generate any buzz so they need a new and exciting narrative. FSU has added some nice players from the portal and have a good QB so they popular

a team trajectory can "turn on a dime" (good or bad) with portal & NIL...........see TCU .........5 wins in 2021..........National Title game in 2022........22 players on their 2-deep were from portal.
Norvell has won 3 games in 2020........5 games in 2021..........10 games in 2022. They appear to be on an upward trajectory under his regime. They've also added some apparent key talent from the portal.
What does it mean??.......doubt it means national title, but it's understandable if people think they'll make the ACC Champ game this year now that divisions are gone.

It's no different than Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Michigan (literally did nothing the last 20 years and yet propped up constantly), Texas, Miami, North Carolina, real USC, and the list goes on and on. It's just flavor of the day and people "wanting" them to be good again for the sake of college football I guess. I'd like for all of those teams to be really good again because football has been extremely top heavy for a long time now but the hype is unwarranted right now.

- a 6th year senior QB
- 30-something portal transfers (instant upper classmen with experience)
- last year they finished 10-3 (best record since 2016)
......basically, Norvell has done an OK job of recruiting (using the portal as a lifeline) and in return, FSU no longer sucks like they did during the Haggans/Taggert years.
I have to keep in mind that we beat them - AT FSU - with DJU as our starter. I'm not predicting a loss when we play them.

FWIW. I generally think Athlon offers a fair accounting of college football in their preview each year.
In the position rankings of each team FSU is ranked 1 or 2.

They are a name brand in college football
They had a pretty good QB last year
They have recruited well and got some really good transfers
The ACC largely blows and they are one of the top 3 most talented teams
They got alot better last year
We were extremely average most of the year and basically only played well for 4 minutes of last years game
While I dont think FSU is a title contender nationally, they will be very good and a tough out for everyone. Luckily its a home game for us.

Short answer is their QB Jordan Travis. We all know what an above average QB can do for a team loaded with talent. Last year’s game against them was closer than I liked. Travis was the one who kept them in that game. Hope our defense will spy him and be prepared! Time for our defensive coordinator to earn his hype. Go Tigers!!!!!

All based on talent and potential. Finished the season strong, very good recruiting both high school and the portal the last 2 years. Good returning core and a good QB.
We learn right out of the gate if any of this indicates the hype is real. LSU will make it very transparent.

Because of a huge portal push and a few high end holdovers from last year, FSU has a very, very talented 1-Deep. There 1-deep is almost all transfers and seniors. If they stay healthy, they are going to be very tough to beat, LSU/Clemson it doesn't matter. If they suffer just a few injuries, there will be a steep drop-off.
To say "they need to prove...whatever" isn't relevant as this is almost a completely different team from last year. It is 2023 or bust from FSU.

Preseason polls are worthless. Nothing but a popularity contest. I think FSU will be 2-2 after its first four games. So, the hype won't last long. After a mediocre start, how will bunch of transfers come together to finish strong enough for a rematch with Clemson in rhe ACCCG? I predict they will not.

ESPN understands conference loyalty is second only to school loyalty when it comes to viewership. If you look at the dismal performance of the B1G you have to ask how they keep sneaking into the CFP. The SEC has quality games and performs well in the CFP. The B1G and ACC have rankings help. You'll always see Mich, an OSU and Penn St in the top 10. This is hedging the bets that not all 3 will lay an egg and one will have 1 or 0 losses. I think putting Clemson and FSU in the top 10 is similar. In past years it didn't matter because Clemson was so dominant they were expected to be undefeated ACC champs and in the CFP. The recent losses may have altered that assumption. When we return to dominance FSU will need to start winning against WF and NC State to be ranked the next year.

They finished 10-3 last year. They return a lot of production. They signed a great transfer portal class.

Decent OL
Top 10 pick at DE
Top transfer at DT
5th year senior LBs
Top transfer at CB
Experienced secondary
They have all the tools to be a great team.
Tigers by 14 though.

I think they’ll be a good team this year. Jordan Travis is legit and the have weapons at skill positions. Realistically they are a legitimate top 15 team, and for sure our biggest competition for the ACC title. But these projections that have them making the playoffs or a top 5 team are ridiculous.
