Check Cade's first year stats as qb1 vs dj first year as qb1... not even close, Cade by a mile. PLUS Lawrence made it possible for DJ to get many in game reps the year prior between his excellence and covid... No reasonable excuse for those 2021 stats. I'm not saying Cade is without problems but he is an upgrade from dj.

Behind a top 10 o-line, compared to a sophomore completing 64% of his passes behind a patchwork OL / WR corps and a first year OC in a new system I don’t see the comparison being that close at all

So you are going to judge them based solely on completion %?
Apr 22, 2024, 11:26 AM
|
|
Cade throws a ton of short passes in our offense which pads completion %. I'm not really trying to defend DJ here because i truly don't believe he's a particularly good QB, but he averaged 8.4 yards per attempt last year despite the low completion %. Cade averaged 6.3.

Last season went down hill in Duke game end of first half. Clemson going long FG 50 yards plus but Dabo second guessed himself switched to punt. From then on Clemson couldn’t hit short FGs. After not trying long FG Clemson lost their momentum.

I know people are concerned to see if Cade and the offense have improved over last year, but you brought up a point that concerns me. Field goal kicking.
That was an Achilles heel for us last season, and that hurt our offensive production tremendously. We have to be able to score 3 whenever we move inside the opponent’s 35. If not, it may cost us a couple of games we cannot afford to lose.

Cade attempted 80 more passes

Yards per attempt was 6.3 for Cade and 6.0 for DJ. Cade was better, but not by miles. Biggest difference is clearly the TD/INT ratio, but Cade was honestly lucky to not have more balls picked off last year. He had a lot of close calls.

The 10% completion percentage delta is huge

Coaches will tell you that you really have to complete >60% of your passes to reliably sustain drives.
Even last year Cade had a 7% completion percentage edge against DJ (sophomore vs senior year)
The place where Cade has the most room to grow doesn’t really show up on the stat sheet. Aside from doing better climbing up into the pocket, it’s more the situational stuff.
- checking down to the open outlet rather than forcing balls (that will increase his completion % another 5% alone) and will improve our 3rd down conversion % and red zone efficiency
- throwing the ball away rather than run out of bounds 2-3 behind the LOS
- being more aware of the down and first down marker when carrying the ball. A few times last year he had chances to pick up 3rd down conversions on runs and left a little on the table coming up short. (I feel like this is the most frustrating because our last 4-5 qb’s seemed to innately have this)
I wonder if the in game comms will aid in his development on the situational side

If he actually had brain he would have left sophomore season for Ole Miss. He would have fit perfect in this offense of scheme. He appears to prefer riding bench. Must get paid more to bench sit at Texas than start at Ole Miss.

The data is close. And as these are different years, different players, it is difficult to draw a definite winner. But when looking at the team performance, not seeing any difference. Cade has not raised our level. he doesn't take teh team on his back and take us higher. DW won us a championship, on his back. TL did the same. He hasn't done that yet. I'm still waiting, but time is running out. be realistic here.

I’m sure he feels the same about you. The kid is very talented and he will only get better, we do have a kid from Daniel that can play some ball too.
Dabo might start giving him a few series in every game to see the clear cut winner rise to the top.

I'm still trying to figure out who rated each of them a 5 star prospects? DJU has poor mechanics, terrible footwork and can't throw accurately. While Cade lacks arm strength, no pocket presence, poor decision making, a weak arm and plays like a deer in the headlights. Put the 2 of them together and I don't see how you even come out with a 2 star prospect.

Neither of them have so far been anything to write home about but their records at Clemson have some separation. DJ was 22-6 as a starter and Cade is 9-5.
My hope is that Cade loses no more than 1 game this year and eliminates that gap.

Cade is better than DJ but that doesn’t mean he is good. Question is will he progress as a QB this year? We haven’t seen a QB get better year over year here in a while.
The passing game is the elephant in the room that will determine success for us in 2024.
