I'm Throwing This Out Re. BV vs Wes

As DC.
BV WAS a workaholic. A great recruiter, motivator and teacher. He was in the game on the sidelines more than any coach on the field. He knew every single offensive play being called by both teams better than the OC's. He had to know in order to defend it.

Our offense knew he knew the offensive plays and when they did not execute, he knew it. Knowing that, I think made them play better and give more effort.
The defensive players knew he was watching every play and knew that he knew when they were not making the plays and BV was calling them out and was so into the game he had to have a git back coach to keep him off the field.

He was a lightning rod on the sidelines. And you can bet he was the same during practice. When he left, that intensity left with him. Wes comes no where near that intensity. BV could make in game adjustments because he was always 💯 in the game. It just was part of his coaching.

There will never be another BV at Clemson. If we could get him and that fire back, we would be in the natty hunt again on a regular basis. Defensive recruiting would pick back up again.

I get down just thinking of what we lost when he left.

Brent Venables was the coach that made the dynasty happen. Dabo is a 3-4 loss per year coach.
I'm sorry. this is just data driven too

Like that fine dynasty he is building in Oklahoma? Love BV, but the Clemson run wasn’t about a single person. It was a situation that was greater than the sum of its parts.

Not a good take. A very stupid one. He was the best defensive coordinator in the country. The skills necessary for that position are not the same ones necessary to be the best head coach. You're attacking a straw man.

You can watch BV and his 6-loss team play Navy at noon today

I love the guy, and agree with your post somewhat, but Venables alone cannot make a team a winner. He was a critically important piece of what happened here for a period of years, but he was only one piece. I think he understands that now, too.

I will be pulling for him this afternoon.

BV was the most intensed coach that I've ever seen in my lifetime and he knew exactly wat he was doing. Most all of his blitz packages, our opponents never knew where they were coming from and that alone made their offense little slower to develop. IMHO, BV was worth every dime of the 2 mil he was being paid and more. I truly hope to one day see him back on the sidelines at Clemson. Like I've said, he was the best I've ever seen!!!

Bob Stoops fired him after OK had a (for them) a poor year from defense’s performance.

Dabo scooped him up.

BV isn’t returning to Clemson as a DC again. One of these days, this fantasy will die.

The trick is to be attentive for other cases in which a lower profile school fires a mediicre HC that was a superb DC before gett8ngnhis shot as a HC.

We’ll see in the near future how many lower profile schools fire their HC … I.e., their HC who was reknown for his defensive coaching skills. Then it might get interesting.

If my memory serves me right, I think there was a time when BV was considered a candidate for the Dabo’s position before we ultimately offered it to Dabo. Seems like I remember his name on the short list at the time???

I followed that situation on here pretty close, and I never BV's name mentioned before Dabo was hired. I think that the minute that T D Phillips made Dabo interim HC, it was a done deal that were going to give him a chance as HC!!!

In January 2012, after it was announced that Mike Stoops would be returning to Oklahoma to resume the defensive coordinator position he had held until 2004, Venables accepted the position of defensive coordinator at Clemson

That’s not the whole truth. Bob didn’t fire him. Bob wanted his brother Mark to run the defense and made him cocoordinator with BV. It wasn’t poor performance. It was more nepotism. Which sunk Stoops. Sound familiar?!

Wrong, Brent was not fired. Bob Stoops brought in his brother because he got fired from his coaching job and made them co-defensive coordinators at Oklahoma. Clemson also doubled Brent’s salary.

Yep, he could truly feel the game. I think the fans fed off it too. Big difference between analyzing the game and making split second reactions. Somehow he taught (or recruited) players that just didn't defend the opponent, but to anticipate the opponent. Sometimes the player and he gambled and got burnt, but not often.

I also think Conn has a part in this too. I don't know anything about the DC at vandy, but he almost pulled off the upset over Texas and did pull it off with Bama.

To me, that's what sets BV apart. He knew every players strength and weaknesses but he would scheme around it. He pulled off a minor miracle at osu 19. I still think that's the best osu team day ever had. LSU would have beat them, but we didn't have the Jimmy and Joe's BV had previously. We were in transition that year but our guys still did it.

Wes May get another year. I'm not in the locker room but something seems wrong. Nil may be some of it, but our good players that's left on defense have alluded to comments that make you think.

Sometimes you just can't duplicate a perfect set of circumstances. Take Saint Danniford for instance. He was having sustained success at Clemson. He gets fired, and eventually winds up as Head Coach at Arkansas. Now, on the face of it, it should have been just as easy, if not easier, to recruit and have success at Arky, but for whatever reason, success never happened. At least, nothing remotely approaching his success at Clemson.

I don’t blame Wes for not being BV. Nor do I blame his replacement. While we won’t find another BV we do need more energy and more manly leadership. Wes does not have any gravitas whatsoever. He is just too “happy to be along for the ride” in his personality regardless of his intelligence. We need forceful characters AND intelligence.

Brent was an amazing DC. He brought intensity and tenacity to the program. Since he left, our defense has been lacking both. We may still have the talent, but we don't have the depth or the intensity it took to play under Brent Venables.
