court one in Fike with the football players such as Kinard,Ratchford,Dwight, Perry, Bubba Brown, etc. However, I was not even in the same ball park as this caller on WCCP just now. He said he played on court one (The football players would not pick you if you were not up to par and basically when they came in the gym, court one was theirs) with members of his intramural team which had won the open intramural championship. Anyway, he said there was this one little pissant that was always playing on court one, and one day when the football team came in( keep in mind, they did not have their own private bball gym back then) this little pissant took the ball, ran his mouth to all the football players, and went over to court 2 or 3 with THE BALL! He said he was the biggest little punk that played at FIKE. He then said to the radio hosts,"Y'all want to know who he was......?". Hosts say,"Who?". He said,"Jimbo Fisher"...I kid you not!!! Said Jimbo was the biggest punk in the gym and after that day, he went back home to West Virginia to his mama and never came back....

When were you at Clemson, Spud? I was there late 70’s (c/o ‘81) and played a lot. Actually did Work Study ($1.40/hr) at Fike, cleaning the pool, signing out equipment, etc. in ‘78/‘79.
Played a LOT of ball in Fike. Only with the fb players a few times. Steve Fuller and Clark were both SAEs I recall, and always together. But the most impressive thing I saw was during warmup/shootaround before a game, one of the Bostics stood flat footed under the basket - with his back to the basket - and did a two handed dunk. I had NEVER SEEN such a big guy with that kind of ability EVER!
My other story was coming in to Fike and I walked into one of the closed in side courts - not in the main gym - and there was a game going with quite a few of the Clemson players, so I asked if anyone had called ‘next game’? A guy told me “Actually, this was a class, and not a pickup game”. When I asked the other guys working at Fike about it, I discovered it was RPA 301 and they were being graded on ‘officiating and knowing the rules of the games they played’. I felt pretty good about my B’s in Calculus and Chemistry after that.
I worked for Banks McFadden and Fred Cone. Two of the nicest, most down to earth people you could ever meet. It wasn’t until years after graduation that I learned they were two Clemson legends!

I agree on Banks McFadden. He was my track coach for the short time I was on the team. I had no idea who he was or what he had accomplished until many years later..... a real gentleman.

My Granddad and Banks were roommates during WWII. Tennessee Ernie Ford was also in his Bomber wing in California and my Grandfathers opinion of the two could not be more opposite. He thought Banks was one of the best humans to walk the earth and Ole Sixteen Tons was a dirtbag.

the game to 21 started, Tk said, "Ain't goan be no dunkin' ". And I at first thought he meant, nobody dunks. But what he meant was, "WE AIN'T GOAN ALLOW NO DUNKIN' ". Anyway, I got a rebound and threw a baseball pass to Kinard on the right side of half court and he was on the run. He took at ball to the hoop with some DB on his hip and about 12 feet from the basket TK went up....Boys, he dunked that ball as hard as any pro I have ever seen....It was at that moment I realized just how out classed I was...

Moose Campbell... Haven't heard that name in a while. What a worker/player. Didn't take a back seat to any of the players of that day and time.

Jarman and Eppley lived at Fike when I was there. I don't think I ever went to Fike that I didn't see one or both there.

On a fast break one day jump over a guy in the lane and lay it up. Just spread his legs and went straight over the top of him. Unbelievable

I believe Dwight Clark was not a Greek. He did play with the SAE's basketball team though. Their intermural team name was The Corporation and most of the team were players from the Spartanburg HS basketball team. I played against them many times, lost most them.

Sounds like a totally true story. Hard to not feel sorry for him getting bought out so cheaply.
I was thinking though, do you think the big oil money guys could have found a way to violate his agreement and got off cheaper?? Or did they just say you are so unimportant we will give you all of it to just go away. You just beat a team 51-10 and who cares hit the road

All they had to do was go back to the equipment counter and sign out another ball.
PS: However, if you were a jerk, when issuing equipment, I would check you out an old, slick ball, with little or no pebble grain left on it….

It has always annoyed me that Clemson ever admitted Jimbo. I know he didn't last long and was there to play baseball but I never been able to stand him and feel Clemson really messed up even allowing him to enroll. I am so glas almost no one knows he was ever at CU

I played a lot of ball on court 1 with the football players from 80-83. I don’t look the part at all (5’7” and about 140 lbs then) but I held my own. Had what would be now considered a preferred walk on offer from the Citadel but decided to go to Clemson. I knew Frank Magwood. We grew up near each other on Johns Island. I tell people we did the original White Men Can’t Jump routine before it was a movie. Frank knew I could play and he would say “I’m not taking the little white guy, you gotta take him” to whoever he was picking against. The other guy would invariably say “ I’m not taking the little white guy”. So Frank would say “okay, I’ll take him but you gotta give me TK” (Kinard). Well boys, if me and Frank and Kinard could get any kind of big guy we could hold the court all afternoon. I remember running into the Fridge one time. I drove the lane and passed the ball to the corner and my momentum took me hard into him. He didn’t even flinch, caught me as I bounced off and said “you ok little man?” Most of the time it was me and 9 football players. They used to call Kevin Mack “Outlaw”. I thought it was because he always wanted to fight over any call anyone made but I guess maybe later we all understood why. He was just a nasty dude. And Spud, I always said that Kinard could have played college basketball just as well as he did football. He was great and I got to play on his team many times, thanks to Frank and our little white guy routine. The other thing I remember was watching Andy Headen change over the years he was there. He came in as a skinny QB recruit and ended up getting drafted and playing linebacker for the Giants. What a transformation. Great memories!

I was young and dumb and, well you know the rest. I played out of my league for a long time and now at 60 I’m paying the price. No wonder I walk like Chester from Gunsmoke.

That middle court was crazy. Great entertainment. Also, how many pairs of the blue Fike shorts did you end up with when you graduated?
