I’ve had Elmer T Lee (one of my favorites), Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace (my go to), Bowman, Elija Craig etc.... I’ve been wanting to try Pappy, escpecially 15 year Pappy. Anyone know how to get it without spending two grand? I know it comes out every fall but I can’t bring myself to pay almost two grand for a bottle.

They have a few of their own exclusives:
- Makers Mark (outstanding) - Four Roses (haven't had yet) - Elijah Craig (just bought the bottle tonight, haven't opened yet).
Not Bourbon, but their exclusive Crown is really, really good.
If you buy any of their exclusives, you can buy 1 bottle of Blanton's, but, they will discount both bottles by 10%. They're sold out of Blanton's as of today.
For me, my favorites are
1) Blanton's 2) Maker's Mark (Mac's exclusive) 3) Buffalo Trace 4) Maker's 46

According to the article mix 60 % Old Weller 107 and 40% Weller 12 yr.
Blind taste test claimed it's better than Pappy 12 and 15 yr.
It's also distilled using the same formulas and aged in the same rickhouse as Pappy but in a different section.

Total Wine and More has a lottery system for Pappy. You pay the retail price if your name is picked. Not sure if they sell the 15 this way or not but I know they do for the 10 year.
Had the 12 year recently. Sweet nectar of the Gods.

$100 good. It’s all about the limited release and the name. My favorite is Bookers. I’ve had nothing smoother and more flavorful. And it’s usually 126-127 proof and still smooth. The Pappy I had was 107 proof and had a burn going down.

I like Bookers too. In 2014, I bought a bottle of the 25th anniversary Bookers because a friend told me Booker Noe had passed away before the batch was aged and bottled. After driving an hour and paying $130 to get the last bottle in the Chicago area, the store manager told me on the way out that it is now worth $300 on the open market. I was skeptical but decided to just keep it. Thanks to the conversation here, I looked it up tonight and its selling for $780 - $1000 in the US and almost $1500 in the UK. Glad I kept it in the original wooden box. Never thought that would happen. Now I'm looking for the 30th anniversary bottle that came out this fall. No luck so far.

I’m beginning to get hooked on the tasting events. In the fall, Larkin’s Sawmill at N Main hosts a tasting, Whiskey After Dark, with fantastic food. They didn’t have any Pappy, but I discovered I like Blade and Bow, as well as Widow Jane. In February, a group of us are going to down to Charleston for a tasting, Bacon and Bourbon. They have Pappy listed on the rare bourbon menu...we’ll see.

There's a very snooty vibe and it is overpriced. I went there on a mission for the 20 year pappy and haven't been back. After watching the owner spend an evening with Anthony Bourdain at the Waffle House on Parts Unknown, I thought there would be more of a laid back vibe there. Not the case at all.

Buffalo Trace became my go to after Maker's Mark decided to water their product down to create more supply (a decision they reversed course on, but the damage was done in my mind). I (and thousands of other folks) wrote an email on their site complaining. After that I found a bourbon fan's website and took some recommendations and made a point of trying about 10 different bottles to find my new "everyday" (not that I drink it every day!) brand. BT was a buck or two cheaper than MM, bt I liked it fine. 1792 is a few bucks more, and is also pretty darn good.
Now, where I might have bought 4 bottles of Maker's during a resupply run, I buy 3 of BT and one 1792.
I buy an occasional other too...Basil Hayden's or Woodford. Non-bourbon American whiskey, too. I like Tincup.

don't go broke buying a bottle of bourbon. There are tons of wheated bourbons with similar or same mash bills that are also incredibly good, especially considering the price if you do some research. Weller 12 is a good start - great one and not as hard to find (though a lot tougher last couple years). In all honesty, Blanton's would be my first choice over a lot of others - even more expensive items. Just not worth it to me to spend that kind of coin on a bottle of booze.
My everyday (not that I drink it daily) is good ol' Weller, Buffalo Trace, or Four Roses if I want something a little more hot. Blanton's is fantastic as mentioned and that is more my special occasion drink. EC small batch another great one. I've also lucked into some Old Charter (some old ### stuff that had been sitting on a shelf for a LOT of years) that was some of the best I've had the pleasure of imbibing. You can find great bourbon at great prices if you research, look a lot and not in a hurry.
Happy hunting! Merry Christmas and Go Tigers!

The Bourbon fad/craze is awful.
Dec 23, 2018, 5:52 PM
|
|
The internet makes everyone experts and connoisseurs in their own minds, creating this false market where things like Pappy start fetching 10x-100x retail for no apparent reason other than the cachet of being able to post your bottle on Instagram.
I've had every iteration of the Van Winkle bourbons in one form or another. 5 years ago, the van Winkle Family Reserve 12 year would sit on the shelves at any ABC store in Virginia because it was $80/bottle, and nobody bought it because that was twice as much money as the next lowest priced bourbon on the shelf. I bought a couple bottles of it, and it was fine. Probably worth $80, but definitely not worth the $400+ they fetch today on the secondary market.
For a friend's 40th birthday, we bought pours of the 23 year at Acadiana in DC at about $75 per. It's very good bourbon to be sure, but is it $75 a pour good when there are 30+ year old single malts out there at the same price point? Probably not, and definitely not worth chasing a bottle of it just to hand someone $4000 for the privilege.
Blanton's is the current must-have fad bourbon. Neat bottle with the little horse on top. Again, 5 years ago it was just $60/bottle bourbon that you might buy a friend for a special occasion because the bottle looks nice on a shelf in the bar. Now it's darn near unobtainable for no discernible reason.
There are lots, lots, lots of good to great Bourbon whiskeys out there to try and enjoy without worrying about the flatulence-sniffing pretense that surrounds the fad bottles. Widow Jane, Four Roses SB, Any of the Woodford Reserve special editions that you come across, Noah's Mill, Elmer T. Lee as you mentioned, George T. Stagg, the list goes on and on.
My closing statement is to worry less about impressing internet people by chasing Pappy and more about having fun trying things and finding new flavor profiles that you might like.
Cheers!

There is a small gas station liquor store near Greenwood that I visit frequently. Its in the middle of nowhere and they get almost zero traffic.
And yet, they always have all the versions of Weller on the shelf, as well as Eagle Rare, Blantons, EH Taylor, Stagg, and Pappy. The pappy comes through about ever 6 months, but they sell at retail prices.
The only customers they get are a handful of hillbillies that come in for $7 Kentucky Gentleman. Thats it.
The owner is a weslthy guy from Greenville who loves good bpurbon but got tired of hunting it, so he opwned a liquore store in the middle of no where. He has to "sell" the stuff, but because its so remote and unknowm, no one ever buys it, so he effectively gets his own private supply of high end bourbon.
I go by there frequebtly, but I dont clean him out or anything. I want to keep him in business but I dont want to take all of his supply for fear of losing mine.

76 years old and drink Early Times. Now that you have recovered from falling out of your chair, let me explain. That is what my mother drank so it was easy to sneak a drink out of her bottle. Seriously, I think it’s what you get used to. I like the bite of Early Times and Jim Bean. Makers Mark and Jack Daniels do nothing for me. Too smooth. I admit I like Buffalo Trace, and I have a bottle on my bar right now. My problem is (see age above), I have two to three drinks a night with a splash of water. Well, to be honest, it’s more like three than two.
I can’t afford to drink the brands you mention daily.
Also, when I go out, I drink Vodka (I can control my intake better). I think back to years ago when vodka and gin were the cheapest liquors you could by. Why has the price of vodka increased so dramatically in the last 10 years.
P.S.
Used to love Old Grandad also.

Why didn't Rebel Yell make the list? Heck, I had a few shots of it in the past and survived!
Not sure why folks would consider $75 for a shot of liquor. Must have more money than sense.
Jim and Jack have worked well and an occasional shot of Crown works fine for me.

If the bourbon costs more than Woodford Reserve I don't buy it....or drink it. I wouldn't pay a hundred bucks for a bottle of liquor, much less two thousand.

If you could actually get it for retail then it’s great but it’s #### near impossible, for current asking price it’s crap, simply not worth what people are going to charge for it. Most shops will get it in then auction it which I view as theft, but whatever.
Willett is better anyway and it’s a $50 bottle

I agree. Elmer’s is one of my absolute favs. My local guy had 2 bottles. 700 each which isn’t bad considering but still horrible. There’s another little unknown single barrel outside Blantons, Elmer, rock hill farms etc etc buffalo does that many have never heard of. Hancock Reserve. Easily findable. Good and hasn’t been whored out bc most don’t know about it... oops. Enjoy

Bourbon whiskey. Like it in Old Fashion or with a splash of ginger ale.
Like Angel's Envy, Wild Turkey, Crown Royal, and George Dickel. Water's for fishing … Dickel's for sipping.
Based on this thread will have to try Blanton's, Basil Hayden's, Weller, Four Roses, Black Maple Hill, and more. Can pass on Van Pappy's unless I hit the lottery.
And go Tigers!

Counterfeit, go over to Ebay and you will see 100s of used empty bottles for sale. Many bars and stores end up w/a Pappy Bottle and mid-grade Bourbon inside.

I was told recently that you could find pappy shots for about $100 per.thought how do you know that what you said isn't true.you might see a genuine bottle, but the contents might be otherwise.had an uncle who refused to drink any gin that wasn't beefeater's,so my dad got an empty bottle and filled it with cheap gin.of course my uncle went on to expound about how great the beefeater's was while everyone was chuckling behind his back.caveat emptor!

There is a restaurant called Buorbon across from the state house in Columbia. You can get a shot of Pappy there, or just about anything Else you can imagine.

I won a lottery for Weller 12 last month during the Ohio bottle lottery and entered for the Pappy one. Never had Pappy or W12 but the Weller Antique 107 and Special Reserve are <$30 and recently pretty available. Those are BT bourbons.
Hoping I can crack open the W12 if Clemson wins a national championship in January!! Planning on cracking open my Blanton’s if we beat ND. Go Tigers!

Blanton is a single barrel Buffalo Trace. They select a few barrels from each barn to be bottled as Blanton. I found a store in Mississppi that was bottling Holly Trace with their name on the label for $20.00 a bottle that was supreme. Found out that they were able to select a barrel after tasting to bottle as their store name Holly Trace. It was essentially Blanton's at a reduced price.

I’ve probably tried 40+ different bourbons. For everyday drinking I recommend Jim Beam Black. Normally I’m not a big Jim Beam bit the black is really good for less the $25

I have the 10,12 and 15. Honestly, they aren’t good, especially the newer 15. Kw the older stitching welled stuff was great. A LOT of hype bud. There are tons of good pours out there that are affordable and more readily available. I’m in a bourbon club and my friends have some of the most expensive and rare juices, so I get to taste them often and with guys who are far more advance than me with better palettes than me, even though mine is very snooty. Lol. They echoe what I just said. Elijah Craig barrel proof Elijah Craig 12year Blanton Weller antique 107 Weller 12 William LaRue Weller(good luck) Heaven hill, pre Rick house collapse Bookers E.H Taylor My club did a private barrel selection of Russels Reserve single barrel that was phenomenal and did another barrel through my restaurant Amin coordination with the club of Belle Meade single barrel. Also phenomenal. Look for those in single barrel. You won’t find the private picks we have Keep an eye out for store pics I’m not even going to bother to mention all of the upper tier or sought after juices. No need to since the secondary is ridiculous and you can’t find it.

Wild Turkey 101 with Diet Coke or straight is my go to. Do not make mistake that many make thinking WT is some low grade bourbon because of the name. WT and their Russells Reserve single barrel are some #### good bourbons. I like Blantons and Makers too and Beam Black is solid as well but WT's Bourbons are my faves.

Secondary market groups on Facebook are the best place to find them. Pappy 15 goes for about $950. The 10 yr Old Rip Van Winkle is about 400-450. Still steep though.
Popped a 15 year last night I found on a relative bargain. One of the best I’ve had for sure, but not $1000 good. I like Blantons, Eagle Rare, Col EH Taylor and Weller 12 as my regular drinkers.

Your best bet is to try it at a bar if you can get it, or get lucky in a liquor store lottery.
Bars eill do it for $70-$100 per pour. There is a bar in Sumter, SC called "Side Bar on Main Street" that does a flight of all the versions of Pappy for like $125.

Also, if you cant get Pappy, get Weller.
Weller Special Reserve Weller Antique 107 Weller 12 year William L Weller
Weller IS Pappy. Well, they age a bunch of barrels inteded to be Pappy. The best barrels are Pappy Lot A, then Pappy Lot B. Whatwver barrels dont make the cut for Pappy Lot A or B get bottled as Weller.
The taste is verrrrry similar, and Weller is easier to find. Its more scarce than Eagle Rare, but much more plentiful than Elmer t Lee and Stagg.
If you can find it at Total Wine, you can get it for $28.
If you find it elsewhere, expect $60-$120.

You may be trying to find a full bottle. I have no idea how you can do that as I am in several lotteries, both local and online and have yet to get an opportunity to buy. With that said, if you just want a taste, I am sure a local bar has some. There is a BBQ restaurant in Landrum SC with an excellent bourbon selection. They have Pappy, 20Y for $60 per shot. Yes, that equates to $900 per bottle but dropping $60 to taste it is a decent alternative to not being able to find it. GL
