Biggest portal need by far is a WR who can stretch the field

We fired our OC and ran off our QB last year for averaging 33 pts/gm. This year we only averaged 30 pts/gm and I think we lead all of College football in Defensive TDs with 5. That means the Offense was much worse. Last year C. Turner was the only stretch the field guy and the results of explosive plays down the field wasn't much better. Wesco is 4.55/40 and his speed on tape is not elite. Moore could eventually be a guy, but you can't bank on that from a true Frosh. We need to do what the Heels did and find us a Trez Walker in the portal.

We didn't run off our QB. We benched him because the guy we replaced him with was immediately much better, so he took his ball and left. Entirely his decision to leave the program instead of sticking around for even one bowl game and not get the start. That's on him so stop with the revisionist history.

He was gone before that game. He and Dabo had signaled early in the season that he and DJ had a plan which was for him to graduate and move on to a program with an offense that was a better fit and to get back a little closer to home. I think DJ wanted to go sooner and Dabo and family talked him out of it.

Id like to see dabo make a push for a QB in the portal

The point is that the OC and the QB aren't necessarily the problem (especially considering Cade and DJ have been pretty much a wash to this point) when the results have been the same or arguably worse. Being basically last in explosives in the country the last 2 or 3 years since Travis left has long been the problem.

No way to spin that. DJ was terribly inconsistent. It was best to move in and give sometime else a chance. DJ shouldn't have been allowed to finish the ND or Coot games.

2-3 explosive playmakers at WR has been and still is
Nov 26, 2023, 10:01 AM

The biggest need for this team.
I’d be SHOCKED if Dabo caved to utilizing the portal in an impactful way (it’s been obvious for 3-4 years to use it, why now all of a sudden?). If he does decide to use it then he’ll need to repair some “perception” issues he’s created with “NIL/portal” and Clemson (regardless of intent the perception is there)

Dabo isn't interested in what outsiders think. If he thinks he needs to use the portal, then he'll use it. But he won't have to explain or make apologies to anyone.

Sorry, guess I misunderstood what you meant about repairing a perception. Well, let me put it this way. I don't think Dabo believes he needs to repair any perceptions. He cares about what's best for the Clemson program and doesn't give a rat's ash about what I think or what you think. That is all.

Bryant Wesco, TJ Moore, Christian Bentacur are on the way to help, plus we have the following returning... Don't believe we will require any assistance from the portal. We also have several WRs returning that can stretch the field if Cade has time to complete checkdowns and reads.
0 Antonio Willia WR 5-11 / 195 Sophomore 1VL 3 Noble Johnson WR 6-2 / 210 Freshman HS Rockwall, TX 6 Tyler Brown WR 5-11 / 180 Freshman HS Greenville, SC 8 Adam Randall WR 6-2 / 225 Sophomore 1VL Myrtle Beach, SC 10 Troy Stellato WR 6-1 / 190 Sophomore (RS) 1VL Fort Lauderdale, FL 15 Ronan Hanafin WR 6-3 / 210 Freshman HS Burlington, MA 22 Cole Turner WR 6-1 / 185 Freshman (RS) RS Vestavia Hills, AL 35 Joseph Flesch WR 6-3 / 205 Sophomore (RS) 1VL Loris, SC 80 Beaux Collins WR 6-3 / 210 Junior 2VL Los Angeles, Calif. 82 Jackson Crosby WR 5-10 / 190 Sophomore (RS) 1VL Six Mile, SC 85 Charlie Johnson WR 6-4 / 200 Freshman HS Columbia, SC 85 Jackson Smith WR 6-1 / 185 Freshman HS Clemson, SC 86 Tristan Marti WR 5-9 / 180 Freshman HS Honolulu, 87 Michael Mankaka WR 6-0 / 185 Freshman (RS) RS Laurens, SC 88 Clay Swinney WR 5-10 / 175 Freshman (RS) RS Clemson, SC 89 Zach Jackson WR 6-3 / 205 Sophomore (RS) 1VL Acworth, GA 5 Josh Sapp TE 6-1 / 235 Freshman (RS) RS Greenville, SC 9 Jake Briningst TE 6-6 / 230 Junior 2VL Brentwood, TN 11 Sage Ennis TE 6-4 / 240 Junior (RS) 2VL Graceville, FL 43 Will Blackston TE 6-1 / 260 Junior (RS) 2VL Honea Path, SC 44 Banks Pope TE 6-4 / 240 Sophomore (RS) 1VL Columbia, SC 81 Olsen Patt-HenryTE 6-3 / 240 Freshman HS Naples, FL 84 Markus Dixon TE 6-4 / 245 Freshman HS Philadelphia, PA

Good list ChestyPuller0311® ... IMHO AW0 and TB6 have shown the ability to separate from defenders and consistently catch the rock against quality competition. Despite Swinney's vocal preference for upperclass veterans to be the WR alpha leaders (Ngata 2022, Collins 2023), true freshmen AW0 and TB6 have been the talents on the field.
If Wesco, Moore, & Betancur can learn fast and Stellato, Hanafin, Turner, Collins and Johnson can compete and catch with better route running, Tigers could have some solid depth behind Williams & Brown. Some portal transfers including Cali native Collins would not be a surprise. To your point, who will stretch the field? Wesco 6'2" 170 lbs? Moore 6'3" 190 lbs? Betancur 6'5" 240 lbs (TE)? Dabo does not tend to play freshman TE's.

A lot of ifs in there
Not really, many of the players on that list will be on the scout team. However, those who have played some this season will continue to develop. Nuk Hopkins didn't really develop into his peak until his junior year. Sammy Watkins took a step back in his sophomore year and started to bud in his junior year. Player stock rises and falls week to week, but I have a great feeling about the immediate impact players growing and taking a step forward next season.

Don't pretend like they were ineffective as FR or late bloomers, but I get your point. You'd have been better referencing Higgins or M.Williams, Peake, Powell, etc. I'm hopeful that Turner and Collins can be the outside guys. Collins is physically our most gifted WR but I don't think he's been anywhere near his potential. I think A.Williams and Brown may already be near their ceiling but have been fantastic.

You act like portal is an option we go to in times of need. We could use a few things, a QB that has his head on strait, wide receivers that go after the ball and catch it when it hits them in their hands, o line guys. We simply won’t

Clemson‘s offense will not improve until we have a significantly improved offensive line. Cade could be decent if he had more time to read the field and make plays. Our running backs could be great if they had an offensive line that actually created holes for them to run through. We can point to the OC and the QB, but the real offensive inefficiencies center on the offensive line.

Our OL has not really been our strongest position group for a very long time, if ever. But we are very young this year and should see improvement next year among the guys we have. If a portal fit is there then good. If not, we should be better there next year than we were this year even just with the guys we have. I’m holding my stock I bought earlier this year.

We've never had a good OL. That's not the fix

We've put up plenty of points in the past with a bad/avg OL when we've had good QB play and legit playmakers. QB is what it is and it's hard to transform an entire OL overnight. Getting Antonio back will help the short and intermediate passing game, but Turner is not enough to crank back up the down the field explosive throws.

There’s truth to that but we also had Watson and TL… when you don’t have super elite talent at qb and rb and wr like we had then we do need to upgrade the OL whether that’s through the portal or actual development and recruiting. That group has to be better giving the obvious fact that we are getting somewhat normal talent at qb and wr now.
