Biden admin cancels $4.3 billion in latest round of student loan relief

Merry Christmas…. Of course some grinches may not value teachers, firefighters, law enforcement and other in public service who have paid their loans for a decade.
“Friday's action, through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, will provide relief to borrowers who are teachers, firefighters and members of law enforcement and meet certain qualifications. The program allowed for public servants to apply for forgiveness after a decade of payments on their federal loan balance.”
If memory is correct, this is actually a legitimate process enabled by Congressional legislation.

What I value is people taking responsibility to pay off their college loans just like I did. It’s not my responsibility to pay yours.

Seems that logic could be extended to _ its not anyone else’s responsibility if someone’s home got washed away because they bought in a high risk location.

not sure how I feel about the debt relief, but you analogy doesn't hold water.
first group knew (well should have if they read the paperwork) what they were getting into in advance. They've been paying, and although a hardship, likely aren't on the street
second group did not, and likely could have lost everything without the means to get back on feet, now if bought in flood plain, maybe, but many aren't in a high risk area that get affected.

Some would say that people saddled with outrageous student debt won't own a home either and might not ever retire either. I think the Dems think the college degree isn't worth what it once was and the people with these loans got ###### over. Depends how you look at it I guess. Personally I don't care if we help or don't help the people with student loans or the WNC folk. I see both sides though.

but I think instead of loan forgiveness that affects random affected people (what about those in same situation that have already paid off their loans), should be concentrating effort on the escalating cost of secondary education in general. That would be more effective to a broader group and not as random

True. It's very tricky. Tough call. One thing I do believe is that aside from certain majors, college can be kind of a scam nowadays. JMO

Now I do agree that modern college can be a scam. Still don’t agree with paying off loans of people who voluntarily took them on. Can’t pay? No scholarship? Not willing to take a loan and pay it? Then do not go to college!! Pretty simple.

Although the government effed it up. They privatized all loans in the early 90s and the costs shot up across the board. Loan and colleges saw the opportunity. Then the fed tried to jump back in and fix it, but it was too late, and they just made it worse.

It takes a special kind of stupid to equate adults voluntarily taking multiple student loans over the course of several years and then expecting others to pay for them with any property owner at or near the beach. Hopefully you keep such idiotic comments sequestered to anonymous message boards where nobody knows you because if you're saying this with a straight face to people in real like they probably think you're a moron.

We do pay for flood insurance. To be fair, the collected premiums come nowhere close to paying for all the claims. Mine subsidence insurance is similar, but the claims come in randomly now.

OK, if it isn't "Orange Jesus" then he must be the antichrist. Evangelicals have been warning the rest of us heathens for 2000 years about the antichrist and when he finally showed up YOU voted him into office (twice) and pledged your undying devotion to him. I really hope you fools get every ounce of what you voted for.

Check out The First Omen if you enjoyed Omens 1, 2, and the Final Conflict. In that movie, the church spends decades trying to birth the anti-Christ to fulfill prophecy. It fits right in with evangelicals support of Israel, which is largely so that Israel can be destroyed in in the end-times. In retrospect, the bullet wound to Trump's ear may count as a "grievous head wound" after all. All the talk among evangelicals about it fits right into Revelation.

There's no doubt that Trump satisfies the spirit of the Antichrist and is AN antichrist. A falsely religious man who cons a whole population of religious people into following him, while publicly displaying traits that are completely opposite of the true Christ. Whether or not he is THE Antichrist is up for discussion. The main thing that tells me he isn't THE antichrist is that everybody in the rest of the world knows he's a clueless buffoon. It's only morons in this country like you who follow him without question. He may test you someday by asking you to cut off your ####. Don't fall for it.

The actions and character of the man tells you he is an antichrist. He’s worse than the first antichrist, Nero, because he tells you he is actually a Christian. To anyone else, it’s obvious he is not. When asked if he had asked God for forgiveness in his prayers, he said he had never done anything that needed forgiving. He has a large subculture that you belong to enthralled, refusing to believe their eyes and ears. It’s really fascinating. I’m guessing you will probably cut off your #### when he asks.

You seem obsessed with making a spiritual statement about Trump. I voted for Trump because he’s politically the far better choice than a clueless Harris or comatose Biden. Here’s a challenge for you. Feel free to go through my post history and show me where I have ever put Trump on any kind of spiritual pedestal? Go for it.

Where's the culpability of the individual and the colleges themselves??
It seems that a major line of thought as justification for loan forgiveness is that individuals were somehow "tricked" into taking these ridiculous loans for worthless degrees for which they are now unable to pay back.
If that's the case - shouldn't these colleges that offered/issued these worthless degrees be "refunding" the money back to the Government to pay off these loans instead of the taxpayer??
But nope - it's always the taxpayer that is on the hook for this student loan relief issue and not the colleges that actually profited from the student loan charade or those who actually took the money.

I've been reading. The program had historically rejected a huge percentage of applicants for things like choosing the wrong loan payment schedule as well as a ton of errors in rejecting perfectly compliant applications. Part of this is a backlog of people who should have had balances canceled from as far back as 2017. Congress attempted some fixes in 2018, coinciding with Trump's proposals to cancel the program.
Seems like a good idea. Incentivize people to stay in public service jobs for 10 years. But some people will betch about anything.

This program has been around for quite some time, and it was passed by pretty overwhelming bipartisan support in 2007 and then was signed into law by Bush. As Tropical said, it's aimed to helping those who serve the public sector and likely don't make enough money to offset the ridiculous college costs now.
No one ever had a problem with this law and program... until some fat orange you know who started bitching about it in 2018.
