Are you asking as a newbie, or as one who seeks something new compared to what you normally buy. If it's the latter, what have you typically enjoyed.

Also, you used 'whiskey' and in the US that generally means bourbon, but 'across the pond' it would be scotch. So, a bit of clarification on that count would help. It will definitely help narrow down the creation of a list.

Simply to make a point, Old Forester Stateman, Whistlepig, Weller, Laphroaig and Oban don't remotely resemble one another.

Correct, I am a Newbie. The more I dwell in the whiskey/whisky/scotch world I am always looking for recommendations that I can enjoy a neat glass.

Although a newbie, I definitely have a palette for the finer ones I have sampled at tastings. If you have any preferences and can put it in category I would love to try. Preferably available at a local liquor store. And I do understand your differences between the possible definitions, should have made it clearer to not sound as strictly bourbon.

Eagle Rare will work for you. Weller's it's big brother! ;) Both are wheated whiskies and smooth.

The corn mash bourbons are a bit more of the challenge as it's hard to escape the alcohol-forward burn on the first sip or two. And if the proof is up there, you'll know straight-away. Those higher proofs hold their flavor profile very well as the ice begins to melt. The difference in five minutes is striking...from I can't drink this to...yum, just as the flavors bloom from the bit of ice melt.

Whistlepig are known for their ryes, which are typically spicier whiskies. Initially, I didn't sip ryes, but they've found their way into my life. It's a process trying different bourbons/whiskies and you like them. Remember, all bourbons are whiskies, but not all whiskies are bourbon. ;)

Speaking of rye...and if you like an Old Fashioned...give High West Double Rye a go. Best OF I've ever had. Who would think of a Utah distiller!?! LOL!

If you get Hulu, search for a show called 'Neat'. It's a neat story of bourbon's history, although it does have a Buffalo Trace bias to it, yet pulls in a number of the other distillers. The fraternity up there is...well, neat!

Cheers!

Opposite ends of the scotch (whisky) spectrum. Love Oban...yet Laphroaig/Ardberg...aren't touching my lips! I'd rather lick an ashtray! :) I like the smokiness of scotch, but the heavy use of peat(?) is a big turn-off for me. Others would be the opposite of me. Highland Park 12 has a nice smokiness...it's go-to along with Oban and Aberlour.

Bourbon is at least 50% corn in the mash and there's no escaping the alcohol burn. Scotch (whisky) on the other hand is always smooth to me...never a burn. Then again, it's not made with corn. Even the gal who led Old Forester's tasting standards for years, Jackie Zycan, says it's simply not possible to escape alcohol burn from the first sip of any bourbon...it's the nature of the beast.

For a basic, approachable single malt scotch:

Glenlivet
Glenfiddich
Macallan
Aberlour

Something in the 12 year range is a good place to start.

I’m assuming you enjoy single malts. If you aren’t ready for that, start with a blend like Johnny Walker Black and work your way up from there.

Are you drinking it on the rocks, neat, or diluting it with water or club soda? Purists would say to drink it neat (no ice), but it’s okay if you have to work up to that. Make sure you enjoy whatever you’re drinking at this point.

You can certainly try the peatier scotches like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Bowmore. These have a decidedly smoky taste. Typically, people love them or hate them. I recommend staying with the smoother, less smoky ones listed above for now, but if you’re feeling adventurous try a smoky one.

Certainly some very good (and expensive) names listed, so will list a couple that are easier to find and good to start with: Basil Hayden and Woodinville. Woodinville was one I found a couple of years ago that is actually distilled in Washington State. Don't let that stop you from trying it, it is quite good. Basil Hayden is, in my opinion, a good one to have on hand. Very smooth, especially if just getting into Bourbon. I guess I could throw in another if you'd like to try a good one that isn't always seen, Johnny Drum.

Some of the others listed are just too hard to find and expensive. I have plenty of Blanton's, but have hoarded it. I also have Pappy's 23 and 12 and Elmer T. Lee. Bought Elmer probably 5 years ago and swear I paid $32 or so for it. Wish I could find another but would likely cost $400. Basil and Woodinville will run you in the $40 range. Good luck and enjoy.

I would recommend getting started with wheated bourbons, much smother than Rye. Agree with many of those previously posted. Weller, Buffalo Trace, eagle rare are all great choices. I stumbled across one a couple years ago that takes the cake and surpassed Weller as my go to. Check out Widow Jane 10 year. It has increased in price over the last year or so (I’m probably not helping by promoting it here). You can typically find in the $60 range. Oddly is made in upstate NY, but it is as good as any bourbon I’ve ever tasted.

Interesting one. To this point, Widow Jane has sourced there barrels and added some of their limestone quarry water in bottling their offerings. They're now on the cusp of distilling their own mash, having sourced their 'material', all within NY state, I believe.

My sense and hope is their own distilled whiskies will be new lines as it's hard to imagine and, perhaps, suicidal to monkey around with the products and approaches that have brought them to this point. My next trip to the Big Apple, I'm hopping over to Brooklyn for a tour.

Lots of solid bourbons, whiskies and whiskys out there...and the stories attached lend to the aura. I see folks who really love bottles that I don't quite care for, but that's the nuance of the liquid and individual palates.

Sip on, All! Enjoy...and to good health and Tiger success!

My friend's bottle of their 10-year bourbon says it's a blend of whiskey from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. It's a highly-impressive blend IMO.

Yes, that's just the nature of whiskey drinking. I see the same.

Out of the 30-40 bourbons I've tried so far, these stand out the most to me:

Old Forester 1920
Widow Jane 10-Year bourbon
Penelope Barrel Strength bourbon
Chattanooga Cask 111 (Tennessee Whiskey)
Colonel E.H. Taylor bourbon
Larceny Barrel Proof bourbon
Uncle Nearest Rye

I also like:

Knob Creek 9-year bourbon
Uncle Nearest 1856 (Tennessee whiskey)
Uncle Nearest 1884 (Tennessee whiskey)
Maker's Mark Cask Strength bourbon
Whistle Pig 6-Year bourbon
Eagle Rare
Blanton's
Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered bourbon

My "everyday" (american) whiskey is Tin Cup (rye whiskey) or Buffalo Trace (bourbon). Used to drink Maker's Mark almost exclusively. I keep some cheap canadian whiskey blends for mixing up whiskey gingers or 7&7s, and something cheap like Jim Beam for bourbon&coke. I figure, once you're mixing them with ginger ale or 7-up or coke, why use the nice sipping whiskey?

The list of really good (and expensive) bourbons is pretty long and varied. Even more if you go into Irish or Scotch.
