is a fool's play.
One can have a "favorite" runner.
Mine is Joan Benoit with Bill Rodgers second.
Here is them with Frank. If you prefer Frank, I am OK with that choice.

I ran in a race with Bill Rodgers. It was really close……and then the race started.

I have raced all those a few times. They had no idea I was there.

He was the guy who started the "yuppie running boom" in the late 70s.
I have been with him many times - intelligent guy. He accomplished the impossible.

For the first ever time when girls were allowed to run the Marathon in the Olympics an all star group lined up.
By far the Vegas favorite was Grete. She was great in every way, there was already a bronze statue of her in her home town. I met her at Maggie Valley, very nice girl.

Others were there on her level from around the world. All their coaches told them to stay behind Grete and hope to be stronger at the finish. That was excellent advice.

Joan did not get the word and bolted away, soon out of sight.
No one panicked as they knew in time Joanie would come back. All stayed with Greta.

At one point Grete saw Joan was not coming back and moved. The pack fell away, but Grete had moved too late.
Maybe it did not matter as Joan came in fresh and waving to the crowd.

Over time all records are broken.
Science, nutrition, better gear all helps advance records.

That in no way demeans those who came before.

Plus the Africans are just naturally better runners. It's not taking away from anything of the past at all. It's like all sports. Things progress. That said, I loved those old days. I used to watch on TV with my Dad when young.

I disagree.
The deal is training.
Thousands train hard and maybe one star emerges.

Running at this level requires total dedication for years.
Few Americans of any color are willing to do that.

No it's not training, no matter what you believe. It's genetics. All types of training has been experimented with and for years with equal commitment.

People of African descent live in the USA and some of them excel as do some of European decent.
The deal is training to be a Marathoner is extremely different form training to run track.
It is an entirely different sport.

Of course, but it's genetics that allow them to do so well. All things equal with the same training, they dominate.

He is bad a$$. They come along. It's great. Still not even close to the best. There isn't a white person in the top 10 all time. Our fastest white dude is probably still 4 or 5 minutes off of the fastest marathon all-time.

Racing to win and racing for a time is different.
Boston is a race. No one cares as to time.
All other big Marathons hire pacers to help runners achieve fast times.

The only thing comparable to Boston is the Olympics.

Are you upset that I have "favorite" runners and they are white?
All my favorites have been beaten by runners that were white and all colors.
That in no way diminishes them.

In my mind without question. I think African runners are generally genetically better. You think it's just training, even when they do the exact same training, which is odd. You didn't need to get defensive though. It's cool your nostalgic. I think it's great.

I ran a race moons ago against Frank and Bill, the Virginia 10 miler. It was 1976 or 77. I saw them once during the race and they were both miles ahead of me. At that time that was my longest race so I didn’t know how to pace myself ….especially after recently transitioning from a sprinter to a distance runner. Side note I could not compete with the likes of Ted Brown or Jimmy Samuels so it was either learn how to run endurance races or stop racing. The road course had a bit of loop in it and that was where I saw the leaders fighting it out. It was inspiring to me and after seeing them I was pumped and able to finish strong. No one passed me in that race after that.
