Best recruit we were within inches of but did not

get. Got to be Hershall. Lots of sources have told me he wanted to come to Clemson but the fat cats that wear red and black made sure it did not happen. He even admitted several years ago that had he not gone to GA he would have come to Clemson.
Also, Clowney. Was a USux lean forever but he visited us right before signing date and word has it Dabo snowed his mother and she wanted him to come to Clemson. I do remember the Coots were nervous as hell until he signed.
Lastley, the two RB’s from North Carolina (right before Chubb). Both narrowed it down to us and GA and when the first one committed to them, all were convinced the second one would be a Tiger.
Also read recently that Dabo had a great relationship with Tim Teebow and felt good about getting him but Tommy B. nixed the recruiting because he had promised Willy Korn that if he committed we would not go after another QB.
Any others?

Yeah. Just imagine the force to be reckoned with Tebow would’ve been with Rob Spence as his position coach & play caller. Remember when we were bubble screen U?

Rob Gronkowski deserves that list.
He Gronk'd us on national signing day. Still in the recruiting lexicon, actually.

Of course most people remember Tony Rice but also Tommie Frazier who later led Nebraska to a NC. According to Korncoot, he was headed Clemson's way until Hatfield signed Patrick Sapp which caused Frazier to back off. Now I love Patrick and he has been a great ambassador for Clemson football, but Frazier would have been great running our offense at the time!

Yep I remember that. I have an old paper Orange & White talking about their recruitment. We may not have even won the 81 Natty if we signed them. Who knows?

The verdict is still out on how good this kid will be, but Xavier Mckinney absolutely fooled everyone signing with Bama. Would be nice to have him back there this yr.
PS: A lot of good names have been posted

was offered a track scholarship to UGA and that's what made the difference - so they'd both be at the same school.
He couldn't lose either way - would have won a national title at either school!

I would have to say Tony Rice. He was Clemson bound until Lou Holtz bought him during a weekend visit to Notre Dame.

Tony Rice was a devastating recruit to lose. With our defenses and surrounding talent in the late 1980s, Tony Rice would’ve been the upgrade at the quarterback position that would have led to a national championship one year or another.
It was obvious by his junior year at Woodruff high school that he would be a game changer at the college level.

I think Tebow was an even greater loss than Herschel simply because we were still championship worthy without Herschel, who later admitted Dooley and the Dogs outbid us for his talent. Tebow was a Clemson kind of guy and a Tommy Bowden and Dabo type if there has ever been one. He was a lot like DW in that he could just "will" a team to victory.

I always regret, we were not able to pull in Raekwon McMillan. Boulware was a beast but could you imagine what Venables could have done with an athlete like Raekwon in his schemes.
