Nowhere. As a Texan, the best advice I heard was from Lyle Lovett. He said don’t trust Mexican food north of Dallas or east of the Mississippi.

Clearly never had good Mexican food. Probably think real BBQ is made with pork too. Bless your heart.

Kind of an outdated take

There are plenty of Mexican immigrants all around the country now. Upstate of SC, Charlotte area and Atlanta area have tons. You are suggesting that all of them don’t know how to make real Mexican based on where they chose to settle in the US?

Yes, because what you know of as “Mexican Food” is actually Tex-Mex food. The Texans and Mexicans intermingled their food (Texans added the meats and cheeses while the Mexicans had the rice, tortillas, beans, etc.). So, while there may be Mexican immigrants in the Upstate, that’s not quite the same thing. So yes, I will stick to the assertion that the best “Mexican” food (really Tex-Mex food) is not found birth of Dallas or east of the Mississippi

And there are Californian Mexicans who would call

“Tex-Mex” an affront to Mexican. Mexican within the US has different layers beyond Tex Mex and there are elements that Tex Mex claims that aren’t 100% Texan either, not rather northern Mexican.

That’s all fine and good if Californian Mexicans feel that way (most people feel anything Californian is an affront in general), but it doesn’t change the fact that what most people refer to as Mexican food is actually Tex-Mex. Fajitas are Tex-Mex, and so is generally any “Mexican” food with beef in it. Queso (even that crap they try to push off as Queso around the country that has no rotel in it) is Tex-Mex. Flour tortillas are Tex-Mex as traditional Mexican food uses corn. So, while there may be layers to Mexican food within the country, anything that is a take on the combinations of traditional Mexican food with the fusion of beef, cheese, and flour tortillas, is just a spin on Tex-Mex, whether they’d like to admit it or not.

La Choza, Hearon Circle in Spartanburg, on the recently reopened I 85 Business.
They claim to be more Mexican fusion than authentic Mexican but the food is outstanding. WIDE selection of great food. And they have a bar!
Maybe not the best, but definitely worth a try if you’re in the area.
