Best Book You've Ever Read? Best Book You've Read This Year?

I'm sure this thread has been posted 300 times over the years, but what is the best book you've ever read and the best book you've read this year?
I was one of those guys that wouldn't touch a book I wasn't forced to read for school, but as soon as I hit 30 I learned that reading is a great pastime and the best way to learn new stuff. So my list of "best books I've read this year" is also my "best books I've ever read."
I dabble in a tiny bit of fiction stuff--mostly historical fiction or southern-related fiction, but truly enjoy history or non-fiction stuff as well as various books about faith, Christianity, etc.
Here's my picks: Like A River by Granger Smith Every Good Endeavor by Timothy Keller The Road by Cormac McCarthy Band of Brothers (obviously) by Stephen Ambrose The River of Doubt by Candice Millard The Tiger by John Vaillant

Currently reading my way through The Bible chronologically in 2024, which I've never done. Plenty of books in the Bible I've never even cracked open, so I'm excited to keep going.

I read it cover to cover a few years ago. Took me almost a full year, reading before bed. It was worth it though.

Defenders of the West by Raymond Ibrahim. The author details how a mere hand full of motivated men kept European civilization in Christian hands against relentless attacks and overwhelming odds. I would consider this as a must read for anyone wanting to know more about their history.

Love Band of Brothers. Big fan of TK but haven’t read that one!
I really enjoy reading the Bible. It’s the only book that has given me life.
“The Screwtape Letter” by CS Lewis if wonderful.
“Anna Karenina” or “The Brothers Karamazov” are the greatest novels.
“The Lord of the Rings” for epic Fantasy.
“Steve Jobs” or “Shoe Dog” for entrepreneurship.
The best book I’ve read this year “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.”

To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. The only book that was turned into a movie, that I enjoyed the movie as much as the book.
Jaws, by Peter Benchley
Devotion, by Adam Makos
The Stand, by Stephen King
A Young Patriot, by Jim Murphy
And of course, the number one best seller of all time, The Holy Bible.

Just like my response to favorite movies, I don’t do drama. I like light reading that might just make me laugh out loud occasionally. Favorite author is Carl Hiassen. He wrote a column for the Miami Herald for years and his books are set in Florida, usually South Florida. Living in South Florida amid the craziness that is everyday life down there might have made them more entertaining to me. The first one I read was Stormy Weather and I was hooked. Another favorite is Double Whammy which deals with the Lake Okeechobee bass fishing industry. If you don’t laugh at the absurd humor in this one I feel sorry for you. Surprisingly, the only one of his books that was made into a movie, Strip Tease, was maybe his worst book of all, IMO.

Carl Hiassen is an author that I found out about only this past year. I’ve read a couple of them - pretty good reads!
I got on a Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch series) kick for a while. I think that I’ve read all but 1.
I love the John Sanford / Lucas Davenport series. Many call them the ‘Prey’ series. I’ve read all of those.
I’m reading some James Patterson series right now.
I would like to find another series like the above mentioned series if anyone has any suggestions.

I loved "A Separate Peace" in 10th grade. I loved it even more two years later when I used it for the essay portion of the AP exam and managed to exempt freshman English.
I am slowly cleaning out bookcases at my parents' house and recently enjoyed reading two books that are roughly my own age: Arthur Hailey's "Hotel St. Gregory" and ER Braithwaite's "To Sir, With Love".

Peter Rabbit was pretty solid at one point. I highly recommend. Another that I must recommend is, Where the Wild Things Are. It is not as complex to read as Peter Rabbit, but the art work is extremely exciting. Be careful to keep the nightlight on after reading. It takes some getting used to the creatures because they are scary. Spoiler alert: The creatures turn out to be nice.

Love books that make me Google for more facts as I read:
Perfect Storm...the first swordfish caught may be 60 days "fresh" in the hold by the time you return to the dock. Of course in that instance they never returned.
The Splendid and the Vile...Ww II horrors. Russia lost 50 million people.
The Wager. How do you head west hundreds of years ago crossing the ocean and not expect he'll. The ships were big enough to store livestock for the occasional steak. Unfortunately they didn't know to pack limes (scurvy).
The Demon of Unrest. A different perspective on Ft. SUmter, succession, and all that followed.

Recently I've been reading the Joel Rosenberg books, which are action novels set in the Middle East and deal with terrorism and the governments / factions in that region. They're particularly interesting at this point in world and Israeli history, and are pretty entertaining to boot.
I'd have to agree with a lot of the earlier recommendations, in particular The Catcher In The Rye, The Grapes of Wrath, the Jeff Shaara books, Game of Thrones although it's frustrating that Martin never finished the series. I like all the Ken Follett books - Pillars of the Earth series through Armour of Light are really good. And I'd throw in a recommendation for Lolita by Vladimir Nabakov - although it's a pretty disturbing book it's very well written and entertaining.

Best: anything among Carl Hiaasen (hard to pick just one)
This year: only completed one so far and it was Skink-No Surrender by Carl Hiaasen. It's for young adults but wanted to see how he incorporated his Skink character from his other novels into this one.

Yes, it’s the best war memoir that I have read. He was a Frenchman forced to fight for Germany on the eastern front. He describes things well, you will feel like you are in the foxhole with him as the Red Army tanks roll past. Great read. Spoiler alert - he lives to tell about it.
