this morning for a chicken biscuit. I think the total was $5.62. I paid with my debit card and the guy asked me if I wanted to round up? I asked him, do I have an option to round down? He laughed and just didn't round up or down.

I don't know if this was just some rogue employee or if it's standard practice.

Anyone else had this round up request?

I've seen it but always thought it was for a charity.

The tipping thing was supposed to be going the other direction a few years ago, went way to far the other way now. Europe is better at some things than we are.

I don't even like it for charity.

You're giving them money so they can write it off their taxes. As opposed to you giving it to the charity directly so you can write it off your taxes.

That is not the way right offs for taxes work

Write offs for tax purposes is never a gain for the person or company donating.

If I take 1000 dollars of profit I can give the Government their third and put 667 in my pocket or donate the thousand dollars to charity and put zero in my pocket but I dont have to give the government their third.

...I don't think you are correct.

Company makes X revenue. Well then they can deduct the cost of raw materials, payroll, equipment depreciation, probably a bunch of other stuff Father G® can advise on.

That lowers the amount that the 33% is applied or for some individuals puts them in a lower tax bracket.

This is why you'll hear self employed folks say stuff like "I made too much money this year, gotta go by a truck to lower my taxes.

Let's do an example. I go to Publix and they are collecting for Children's

Miracle Network - real life as this was last month for me.

Anyway, I give them $10 added to my total for CMN and they give me a big thanks or maybe even a card to put on the wall.

Anyway, I have a charitble deduction of $10 - not that I can use it - have you seen the standard dedcution amounts lately?

Publix takes my money and gives it to CMN - it is not income to them nor is it a deduction . They are just collecting for the charity.

HTH.

It does if that money is already allocated in your budget for charitable

Not much chance I'm going to be selling my old Aftco T-shirts on line. But give them to Goodwill or the Retail store? Sure I can.

No, try again. Hey, don't give but this is not valid reason.

Businesses do not get a deduction for money they collect for charity.

When they collect, they put the money in the bank (that's the debit) and record a liability (they owe the charity that money - that's the credit).

When they pay the charity, they reduce both the liability and their cash - Debit liability and credit cash.

NOTHING ever went to a charitable expense deduction. Cannot happen.

I don't know what those cats get paid, but I know the same few folks have been working at them since at least 2021. I go enough that I'm a bit recognized so I figure a couple bucks won't hurt me.
