Basketball at Clemson will always be second-rate, unless

Feb 21, 2015, 6:22 PM

We treat it like it's the best in the nation.

If we want to be a dominant team in the ACC and the nation, we MUST invest in our program.

Take a look at the football program; we have one of the nicest facilities in the nation, and we're about to make it a whole lot nicer.

Basketball? Not so much.

For football:
The Hill. The Rock. Spring Game. Recruiting. NSD events. All in Ball featuring Kirk Herbstreit. The Tailgating. Tigerwalk. Tiger Tailgate Show. Fan Day. Westzone. Club Seats. The dadgum Oculus. Letterwinner's Lounge. Player's Lounge. Advertising. The indoor practice facility. Pro Day. The brand new football facility. Etc. Etc. Etc.

For basketball:
We're kind of redoing Littlejohn, but not touching the upper deck. We also have the Rock the John, but we have to do that on a football weekend to ensure we generate a crowd. What Clemson fan is even aware of when NSD is for basketball? When's the last time we had a well-known member of the media touting Clemson basketball outside of a game?

Bottom line: Until we change the mindset and begin investing in the program, get used to being a low to mid-tier team on a yearly basis.

Amen, it's RIDICULOUS that we are shortchanging our basketball team. The upgrade has become a joke? Do we just hope we will drop basketball? Highly doubtful we will. Whether you appreciate the sport or not, it exists, and we need to throw or support and resources behind it.

I am in agreement with all you have stated. This team/program needs our support. A patch job on Littlejohn isn't going to do it, it's going to take an institutional commitment for this program to be relevant. It doesn't matter who is the coach until changes in attitudes of the powers that be, we will always be behind most of the other ACC programs. Just my opinion. Proud of the heart, effort and commitment of this team.

I love Clemson basketball and would just hope that the commitment to our program comes before I croak. Go Tigers...

I disagree. I think the proverbial 'hump' was still there. 1-and-done was our thing during his tenure.

I think any Clemson fan would gladly take the 30 plus win seasons and the one and done over what we have now I'm sure lol! Plus there was some bad luck like Oglesby getting thrown out in the first half and it wasn't like we got clobbered...a couple of those games we should have won and just didn't get it it done, not like we got embarrassed

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right, but we're 60 years behind ...

Feb 21, 2015, 6:38 PM

We had an AD for 30 years who was totally ambivalent about basketball.

And then subsequent leaders only paid lip service to the program.

If we go forward with construction on a truly top-notch basketball facility, we will have made the first substantive move in our school history toward saying we're finally serious about competing at an ACC level.

The new area and ancillary facilities/amenities ... whether they are the chicken or the egg, it doesn't matter ... this is the critically necessary first step in attracting coaches and players needed to win consistently.

bill mclellan green lighted tates to "build" the program

Feb 21, 2015, 6:41 PM

that kinda got derailed

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But he built too fast and too obvious ...

Feb 21, 2015, 6:47 PM

Trying to bring in an instant ACC title contender was bound to raise red flags ... and by that time, we were already 20 years behind the rest of the ACC.

The time to have taken hoops seriously was in the late 50s and early 60s.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the tater just got too "enthusiastic" and thought he could

Feb 21, 2015, 6:51 PM

land the number one player in the country....Moses Malone. And he tried a lot of different things...not many of which were within the rules then. But Clemson wasn't the only program to get NCAA probation from recruiting Malone....New Mexico and Maryland (Lefty) did as well.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We already had "Abraham", but getting "Moses" was a stretch

Feb 22, 2015, 8:25 AM

Colon Abraham was a really solid player on the very best Clemson squads of all time. He was overshadowed by Skip, Stan and Tree.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed. We need better players, and we need to do what

Feb 21, 2015, 6:40 PM

it takes to attract them. We probably won't be on the same level as UNC or Dook in my lifetime, but Clemson is certainly capable of attracting good basketball players, at least better than we have seen here in a while.

We need to learn some lessons from Auburn and GT after we have better facilities.

Feb 21, 2015, 9:28 PM

That IS a critical first step I agree. I remember thinking when Auburn rebuilt, hey, they're starting to take this pretty seriously. However, so far they have not progressed much. The momentum will have to keep building even after the paint is dry. Recruiting will have to have a MUCH larger focus and commitment. I believe we have a great chance here, but we HAVE TO get better offensively.

I. , for one ,still love Clemson Basketball

Feb 21, 2015, 7:00 PM

I kind of like being the underdog on most nights .Makes the winning even sweeter.

As a student I rarely ever missed a game even though I lived off campus.

I loved it .

and you rarely missed a game as a student... even though you lived off campus? right there is one of our problems.. an apathetic student body and yes, to a large extent the same goes for our seasn tix holer base.

and i think you mean dale davis, not james.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dang, missed the one on Dale

Feb 21, 2015, 8:02 PM

would like to have James back.

I think you are right, need more students like me .

For the 5 billionth time, basketball is an urban sport;

Feb 21, 2015, 7:03 PM

not that Clemson isn't "urban", it just isn't urban enough to compete with schools that have large urban environments to attract constant big crowds @ games.

Football is a way of life in the southeast, but basketball is not.

Not that there aren't massively large urban schools in the southeast, but I think you get my jist.

Clemson will have its days on the court; but its days will always be defined on the gridiron.

Lawrence KS is "urban?"

sorry, but that's a silly argument

two of the most successful basketball programs in NCAA history are in NC and one is in KY

so your agrument about the 'way of life' in the southeast is silly as well

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How "urban" is Gainesville, FL? South Bend, IN? Morgantown?***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's all about football

Feb 22, 2015, 10:37 AM

We are still waging a financial war with other conferences. Football is the money maker. Clemson and FSU are keeping the ACC ship afloat. Louisville has good potential to join us on that front. VT, Miami, UNC, and GT also have potential to help out. BUT if Clemson were to invest more in basketball it would be pulling from other sports, likely football. If we take a step back in football then we are relying on FSU to earn all the money for the conference and will likely lose more money. This could threaten all sports, even football, existence in the ACC.

The whole reason the ACC doesn't get as much respect and MONEY as the rest of the power 5's is because we have too many schools that are more focused on BASKETBALL. Joining them would only make things worse and investing at their level would require closing several other programs, firing football coaches, ending the football facilities expansion, or forcing students to finance the changes through tuition. All of these are terrible options.

Too much investment in Basketball is the PROBLEM in the ACC.
