Bahia Grass…

4

Jun 28, 2023, 11:29 AM

Spawn of satan or just run of the mill scourge? It has infiltrated by Bermuda (just common Bermuda…very large and uneven lawn) and apparently it is winning the battle. Have some Zoysia as well that I hope eventually takes over…but curious is anyone has had any lucky with Image (Imazaquin) on Bahia?

I have not owned a lawn mower in 20 years nor had a lawn. It looks like I will have need of some tuff grass soon, may go with this as it should hold my red dirt in place until I can get the more natural look back. Thanks for posting as to it.

I would stay away from Bahia unless it's a low maintenance out of the way area.

Yeah…what Newnan said…IMO it’s not a very attractive grass/lawn…but if you just want coverage it would work…I guess there is a reason it grows roadside.

There's a product called Manor that kills it.

Metsulfuron: Quali-Pro MSM Turf Herbicide, Quali-Pro Fahrenheit, and Blindside Herbicide are professional use herbicide products that will control bahiagrass, as well as many broadleaf weeds.

Metsulfuron can be used on bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, and zoysiagrass. The Quali-Pro Fahrenheit also contains dicamba for broadleaf weed control. Blindside Herbicide also contains sulfentrazone for nutsedge control.

I have 419 Bermuda in my yard and I use Target6 and MSM Turf to keep Bahia grass out. Not sure if you can spray these two on zoysia or not. Cimarron works pretty well also.

I have heard that it is very easy to damage/kill other grasses with some of the products that work well on Bahia…and that it takes minuscule amounts of the concentrate. Are those something you mix yourself, premixed? Also, they seem to work well on established/mature Bahia?

Yes....I mix 1.5 quarts per acre of target6 and 1 quart of 2-4 D with 60 gallons of water. 2-4 D is for broadleaf weeds.

Target6 also kills crabgrass, sandspurs and nutgass.

I also mix 0.5 oz. MSM Turf with 1 quart 2-4 D with 60 gallons water per acre on Bermuda and centipede.

MSM Turf will kill bahia in either type grass but it works slower than Target6.

I'm not sure about spraying either on Zoysia though....better check label.

I know Target6 will kill centipede so it might kill Zoysia also.

By the way, the main reason I went with a hybrid bermuda on my yard is because you can kill anything else out and it want harm the bermuda.

My experience is Bermuda will infiltrate and spread more in zoysia than the other way around. The Bermuda comes out of dormancy quicker and almost instantaneously where the zoysia is a slow burn taking well over a month.

Zoysia is a slower grower but grows thicker once established

Jun 28, 2023, 2:15 PM

Bermuda requires more water so you can take measures to starve it when competing with Zoysia. Also, if there is gap in dormancy then that’s the perfect time to nuke the Bermuda with the correct herbicide

I am fine with the Bermuda and zoysia…may the best grass suited for my yard win…it’s the Bahia that is causing issues. I’m gonna try some of the product/advice here (and from Clemson Extension)…but I’ve considered nuking over an acre lot just to get rid of it. It’s cropping up everywhere.

Bahia is the worst grass ever. Not sure why a fast growing

tall grass is a good idea for highways. Looks like ### and requires a lot more mowing as those long seed stems start coming out soon after mowing
