Serious question for the Electronic serious folks?

I purchased today a 55" Samsung 4K UHD Smart TV that I haven't even taken it out the box yet b/c I got my neighbor to help me bring it in the house. After he was looking at all of what it says on the box, he said that my HD cable box wasn't 4K UHD capable, and that I wouldn't be able to get UHD on the TV. He also said that none of the cable boxes was ready for the new technology of Ultra High Definition. I mean it sounds like bull chit to me, but I really don't know. So is any of what he's telling me true. I even bought a Bose sound system to go with it, but if I'm not going to have the UHD clarity, I'll just take it all back in the morning. Do any of you know anything about the 4K UHD technology that could fill me in to what it takes to get the full use of the technology. TIA

I really don't know but I seen some of them kind of tv's few months ago in a store and they looked unreal..so I hope you get to keep it..sure wish I had one

I'm not sure cable/sat/streaming will ever be 4k

takes too much to send a signal. Heck most signals today are 720. only way to truly enjoy will be through DVD/movies and I'm not sure they're producing them.
your picture will be great, better than standard 1080, but it'll be a while before products catch up
kind of like with HD first came out and most channels were not HD

Are any cable companies UHD compliant?
Good Luck! It's just slim pick'ns right now.
Your picture is noticably better than 1080p, but
what you will be able to watch is sparse. BUT,
technology moves so fast, it probably won't be long.

Some that have posted in here are right...most if not all cable/dish companies are not producing at 4k resolution. To be honest, many of them at most allow output at 1080i, but still not at 1080p (TrueHD)...and many still only send the signal at 720p. What the units do is the same the new TV will...they upscale the picture.
Now, for basic cable, here's what that means will happen. You'll feed out of the box at 1080i resolution (as long as 1080i resolution option is a setting you have on your box...typically the highest you'll have for box settings). Then it will feed into the TV and get up-scaled in the TV to 4k resolution. It will improve the clarity of the picture, but in true realm, still will not be a "true" 4k (as the input/signal will not be in 4k. The only way you will get true 4k is to have a DVD/media player that reads and outputs in 4k to feed into the TV, along with 4k movies (several have been made/re-mastered in 4k, but no where near as many as Blue Ray's that are available).

Your tv will upscale signals to 4k. While not true 4k it will look slightly better than 1080p.
I believe Netflix has a couple 4k options and Directv is getting set to offer 4k On-Demand selections.

So would it be better for him to wifi his
computer to the TV...but that's assuming
his PC connection (ISP) is different from his cable,
which they may not be.
'just a thought...

8K will be the next standard. 4K will be like 720p was to 1080p. 8K is coming very soon and the technology to provide it with it. Sit tight.

The 8000 series has a port for an add-on box which will allow for firmware upgrades. I'm not sure how the 7000 series and below will make that happen. It's all a matter of the connectors being able to handle the bandwidth. Netflix has started 4K downloads, though their selection is supposedly limited at this time. It's around the corner but with all of the discrepancies, I decided to wait at least a year for the 'big players' to work out the kinks and the standards to settle in. Just my $1K+ worth....

I THANK all of you for your input. Thank You VERY much. Now I will just take it back and trade it for a 65" vizio HD 1080p smart TV in the morning between 7 & 9 for a lot less than i paid for 4K UHD like $1100.00 for the VIZIO 65" And this Samsung 55" 4K UHD was $1478.00 I've been invited to the sale. I just don't need a TV that may take a couple of years for everybody to catch up with the 4K UHD technology. I'll just hook the Bose surround sound to a the 65" VIZIO and be very happy with it. Again, I thank all my Tiger brother for your input and advice....
