As someone that has coached little league and purchased buckets of baseball.

I cringe watching MLB games. Ball in the dirt? Toss it away. Foul tip? Ball gets tossed away. Pitcher don’t like the feel? Get it the eff outta here!

I know they reuse them for batting practice or sell them as “game used”, but as someone that has gone out to buy $50 buckets of Rawlings balls 2-3 times a season, it makes me roll my eyes how they have to have a new ball 3+ times each at bat.

When I worked for the Spartanburg Phillies

We would put them in a cement mixer with extra fine sand after every game until they completely wore out. Would give the kids a free ice cream if they returned foul balls

What was the point of that? To ruin them? Or make them usable again? I don’t get it.

It took the divots etc out of the leather so they would be

smooth. . I didn’t mean we left them in there all at one time until they wore out.
We did it for a few minutes after every game until they eventually wore out.
Usually the threads failed before the leather.

Would they go back into the game rotation?

Or just be used for BP? I have to know the details now.

The better ones would be used in games

Bat girl would bring out a bunch of balls an ump would decide which ones were worthy.

By the end of the season it was down to slim pickings.

There was absolutely no extra money in 1A ball once attendance started dropping.
The Phillies paid the players and bought the uniforms and the club had to provide everything else.

Old Phillies place was pretty cool. I went there once when I was really young.

Live in Durham and at one time had a friend with access to buckets of Durham Bulls game used balls.

They weren't getting tossed or thrown to kids in the stands for the most part.
