Well that was big! Also, not sports related, when Miss American (like in the mid-80's) mentioned striving for world peace, there was a distinct attitude change in the way Americans thought. Hard to deny that!

He was the 3rd leg of the 2 mile relay got the baton about 30 yards behind and like a freshman he tried to make it all up in the first 220. He did that and even got about a 30 yard lead in the second back stretch, but was fading fast. As he passed the opposing pole vaulter the guy yelled encouragement to his team mate that my son had quit. I saw him pick up his pace a little bit. The other guy caught him and passed the baton off with about a 10 yard lead. Fortunately, our anchor man made it up and they won.

After the meet my son told me what the pole vaulter had said and said "Nobody tell me that I quit."
He never quit a race in track or cross country.

I was there. My brother played soccer as a youngster thru high school and we went to a bunch of games back when they played on the field behind the Death Valley north stands. I was in my first year of school when we played in the national championship at Riggs Field in 1988. San Diego State? It was very cold and I was sick as a dog. That was the only soccer game I ever went to where the fans cheered just like it was a football game.

I was grad assistant that year.

We avenged two losses to North Carolina by beating them the day before in the semi-finals to advance to face San Diego State in the Championship game which we won 2-0.

The funny thing is, we actually finished 5th in the ACC standings that year behind Virginia, Duke, Maryland and UNC.

I was thinking the game must have been in '88 for the '87-'88 season since it was so cold. And I was so sick with the flu, but I walked to the stadium from my apartment at Village Green. No way I could do that again now. I'd die before I got to the stairs behind Keller's store.

The famous first soccer Natty in The Kingdome in Seattle. The only one that I didn't attend as a fan. That's awesome man. You were on some amazing teams.

I was at that 1987 championship as well. Eric Wynalda was the best player on the field but our tigers were the much better team. Me and my friend were allowed in the San Diego State locker room afterwards and got Wynalda's autograph. I was 11 at the time.

Was that the year the Falcons beat the Vikings to go to the Superbowl ??

If it was... I think the Vikings were 15-1 and their field goal kicker, Fuad Rivez, had not missed a field goal all season long until the NFC Champioship game as time was expiring, he missed his first field goal of the year for the win.

Fuad Rivez was an animal... and made history that year too by being the first NFL kicker to get a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for a late hit out of bounds.

I am from MN, and it was just another disappointment in a long history of disappointments for the Vikings.

Think it was 1997 or 1998.

While all of the sports memories that y'all have mentioned are excellent, my most vivid memory, the one that I can remember each and every moment of is:

The 1981 victory over Georgia in Death Valley. Georgia was the defending national champion coming into that game, but left that day on the losing end of what was a monumental 13 - 3 Clemson win that was the springboard to Clemson's national championship later that season.

My brother and I attended that game together and sat down low in the south upper deck and were both wearing cowboy hats. Many memorable moments in that game, but what I remember the most was when the game was over it seemed as if no one wanted to leave. Then as we were walking down the ramp to exit the stadium with everyone else, the roar of the crowd grew with each step that we took.

It was sheer euphoria and I will never forget that feeling.

#2 would be Sid Bream's game winning slide in the '92 NLCS.......but that is another story for another time. lol

Was in Tampa for 2016 Championship, in that same end-zone so had a perfect view of the TD play developing and the whole drive. By far #1, for the sheer level of excitement taking the lead with 0:01 left.

The Dunk is #2.

2018 game was great and capped a great season. But by the time it was all over, there wasn't much thrill-of-the-moment excitement, but ramming it down Bama's throat for 10+ minutes to take a knee inside the 5 was lovely #3.

#1 non-Clemson moment has gotta be "Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!"

Chris Michael drained a long jumper to beat the tarholes in Littlejohn in the mid-80's while I watched from as far away from the court and you can be and not be outside. Sitting in the endzone watching Treadwell's kick win the game in Athens was a good one for me, again because it was live. Fortunately, I travel a bit for work and had miles saved up so I was easily able to book us a flight and hotel. We flew out of Savannah to Atlanta. He did great on the flight, and we hustled to make our connection in ATL. 24 hours later we were watching the confetti in Santa Clara! It was the best 48 hour trip I’ll ever take.

It started out by me complaining while not being allowed to roam the course & being forced by my buddies to sit with them in a misty, very cool mid-June Sunday to watch EVERY single twosome come to our 'catbird' seats @ 18th hole Pinehurst #2 @ 1999 US Open.

Watching the mass of humanity follow Tiger's charge, in the penultimate group...of the 20 or so golfers that had a putt that day from the same area, only 1 made it before Payne Stewart. I'll never forget being so close to see that last putt drop and...his pose is forever etched in my memory. Payne's grasping of Phil's face to encourage his impending fatherhood....Needless to say, the complete amazement & pure joy of that day is indescribable. Sad to think a mere 4 months later the drama that unfolded in his Lear Jet...

#1 would be the 81 NC game over Nebraska. I was only 9 years old at the time and my Dad had taken me to my first ever Clemson games that season.

#2 would be "The pass" from Deshaun to Hunter in 2016. That last drive, the sheer will to win and determination to not lose was special.

#3 Atlanta's first World Series win in 1996.

We listened to the UNC Clemson game on the drive to New Orleans. My sister dang near drove of the side of the road when we won. hearing Tim Bourret and his excitement within his voice is something i will never forget.

Unfortunately - this was the beginning of the end of anything normalcy. folks used to say Clemson will win in the dean dome when #### freezes over. we were not to far away from that.

Clemson stopped rushing Etienne and lost the Natty to a bunch of Cajuns. it was in their back yard, but they were in rare form. grandma's singing Neck as we walked out of the superdome. terrible experience.

Two months later Covid was a part of our everyday vocabulary. NIL and transfer portals slipped into high gear. I blame it all on our first win in chapel hill.

I was fortunate enough to see last year's win in the dean dome in person. i was hoping it would knock our world back into a normal orbit. it helped, but we are still not the same.

As a spectator, watching the 2016 Clemson national championship. I was too young to really know what was happening in the 81 championship.

My son hitting five 3's in the first half at a church league basketball game. His team led 15-12 at the half ..... my son scoring all the points. He did not score in the second half as they had two or three boys guarding him every possession.

Also going yard off Zack Gilstrap at Northwood Little League all-start team little league practice. Timed a back foot slider perfectly!:)

2nd - 1980 hockey team upsets the Soviets and goes on to win the gold

3rd - Chase Bryce leading the Tigers to the come-from-behind win against the Cuse to keep a perfect season and carry us to the 2018 natty. Amazing comeback and that last drive - I've watched it second only to the last drive of the 2016 natty.

I'm sure there are others, but I'm old and that's all I can remember off the top of my head!

Watson to Renfrow.

A very close second for me was 88 Dodgers. Kirk Gibson could barely walk and hit that home run. Set the tone for the rest of the series for the Dodgers. Mom grew up in NY and was a diehard Brooklyn Dodgers fan. She passed away at only 37 before the series, and I'll always remember that one. I was 16.

The 1981 Nebraska beating was close. It had to be the two Alabama beatings by DW4 and TL16.

The 44-16 win over Alabama to become the first team in history to go 15-0 was my favorite moment, beating an Alabama team already crowned pre-game as the greatest in history, only for the CU team to be swept under the rug in later conversations about the greatest team all-time, leaving me dumbfounded that some still question the presence of SEC bias.

I’d love to say it was sitting on the floor in front of the TV that New Year’s night in 1982 reading the ticker across the bottom of the screen. My mouth dropped open in stunned amazement, “Clemson University Tigers, 1981 National Champions “…. But there was one personal moment even bigger for me.

I was always a skilled baseball player, but I was also a runt. I played the middle infield, I could hit like clockwork from time spent with my father coaching me, but I was a base hitting machine and not a power guy by any stretch.

We played an early season game at Lower Richland and watching their starter warm up I felt I knew him. After a while it came to me. We had played on the same pop-warner football team when we were 10. I remembered I thought of him as a chump for one particular experience.

In practice they had put me at left offensive tackle in scrimmage one afternoon ( still can’t figure out why ). They had put him at right defensive end. Every time the ball was snapped he would just kind of chuck me repeatedly but never made attempts to get around me.

So like a nice guy I explained to him his objective should be to get past me and tackle the guy with the ball. He simply gave me this indignant look like, “What do you even know ?”

Well he would put his head down toward my chest as he chucked me so I started sinking my fingers into the ear holes of his helmet and tossing him around by his melon. After about six snaps like that one of the coaches saw it and told me to knock it off. 😆

Well this was that same kid about to start on the mound for LR. I don’t know if he remembered me or not. But I studied his motion and realized it was easy to pick up the ball out of his hand. Through the first inning I really focused on his motion and what he had as far as any breaking ball. He had a curve with very good break which was odd for high school kids back then and like any hard breaking curve there’s a trade off putting the energy into the supination ( spin ). You’re going to give up forward velocity.

I was so versed on recognizing off speed breaking balls because my father’s curveball was fantastic. So through the first inning I studied him. He would use that curve but never until he had gotten a fastball over for a strike. He made our one, two, three hitters look silly chasing his curve and breezed through the first.

I lead off the second and I took a position between the on deck circle and the plate as he warmed up just to better gauge his fastball.

I knew he was coming with that first pitch fastball and I was more than confident I had it timed up. He did and I did. In fact he grooved it. My face was down there on the ball, I consciously watched the bat hit the ball. To this day I can tell you you impact point was just below the “R” in Rawlings.

It took off like a shot for deep left field and cleared the fence by 30 feet. 😁😁😁 I tossed my bat back toward our dugout and commenced a Reggie Jackson style homerun trot.

Then my father arrived 3 minutes later. 😞😞😞

It was only homerun I ever hit that was not the inside the park kind. They say when you die your whole life flashes before you. Not for me, I’ll see that same pitch again on repeat ! 😁😁

moments, like the first and only time I ever broke 70, with a 68 at my little home golf club in Holly Hill.

Then, you have great college allegiance ones, most notably for me, 4 to 13 with ONE second left to beat Bama for the Natty.

For a whole country one, the Miracle on Ice that was already mentioned is hard to beat.

For us southern redneck NASCAR fans, even though I was a Jeff Gordon fan, finally seeing Dale Earhardt, Sr. win the Daytona 500 in 1998 was magical. Never have seen every single member of every single teams pit crew out on the pit lane to greet a winner, before or since. That moment becomes even more poignant, when you think of what happened at that same track three years later.

1986 at The Masters, the Olden Bear turning the clock back with a Sunday Back Nine for the Ages.

1997 at The Masters, young Tiger Woods introduces himself to the world, as if anyone who followed golf did not already know who he was. I find it ironic that he is always mentioned and lionized for setting that all time scoring record, but the fact that one Jordan Spieth came along a few years later, and tied it, on a course that had been toughened up significantly, "Tiger-Proofed" if you will, is rarely mentioned.

And of course, since he defected to LIV, the fact that Dustin the Mini-Coot Johnson set the NEW all time scoring record at -20 at The Masters in 2020 just about NEVER gets mentioned.
