I have surgery Wednesday. Pain in my right arm has become intolerable. I understand the recovery is not the worst. Anyway, looking for good experiences only. I can find all the bad ones on the interwebs.
TIA

Good morning, I have had two neck surgeries and would say that what you are getting done is definitely better. I now have 2 Spinal Cord Stimulators to manage the pain. I wish you the best with your surgery and recovery. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Had your exact surgery 2 years ago.Southeastern spine institute did mine. I had the same problem, tried injections etc, nothing worked. Recovery was a breeze, best of luck to you.

Had this years ago by military. Recovery was not fun for me, but not excruciatingly so. I was younger then, and it worked so that I did another 15 years in military. I have still have problems, but only bc my injuries were pretty extensive and the surgery didn't fix all of the nerve damage etc.
What it was was the best thing I did, and probably will be for you as well. It basically fixed all the pain associated w what the operated on. I've been pretty good ever since.
Nowadays, lots of advancements make the procedure and recovery better. You will be fine and be glad you did it!

I didn't think "fusion" and "replacement" meaned the same thing?
I'm still going conservative with the l5s1 putting off the surgery as long as possible
Good luck

since I have taken a deep dive lately, I can say they are not the same, but two parts of the same procedure. They replace the disc and then fuse the neighboring vertebrate.

I had C4 and 5 replaced 10 years ago. Had p/t and rest and all goes well. I have a titanium plate which restricts my neck movement. Glad I did it and you will have success Wednesday. Prayers your way.

I had c3 to c7 fusion and replacement. Recovery was maybe 3-4 months with bone healing stimulator. I have spinal stenosis so unfortunately more experienced with spine back neck issues. The neck was done in 2018 and only issues were at c2 above fusion which have subsided. Had injections abalation.Expect your range of neck motion to be reduced, looking up is very hard. Good luck with your surgery . I am going in March to have a major spine fusion due to stenosis. T10 to S1 .All prayers accepted.

I had all of the discs in my neck replaced with artificial discs. And all the vertebrae fused in Oct. 2023.
Recovery is not hard but it didn’t make all the pain go away. I still have arthritis and my neck and left arm still give trouble.
That was my 4th back related surgery and I had my 2nd 10 level fusion in march 2024. Back feels much better than neck.
GOOD LUCJ and remember the Muscle Relaxers and Pain meds are prescribed for a reason, TAKE THEM !!!

The thing I failed to mention!!!
Anterior goes through the Front of the neck. Post Surgery 15 months and I still have some issues swallowing. I have had an ENT do swallow studies and apparently, I’m 74. The muscles in my throat are not as strong as before surgery. It doesn’t keep me from eating, I’m a fat guy, but it can be bothersome at times. One thing you have to chew your food more!!!
Again, GOOD LUCK!!!!
Go TIGERS!!!

Fusion and disc replacement aren't the same. Either should immediately help your pain. Disc replacement is done in hopes to maintain your range of motion but is expensive and most insurance companies don't cover it as a fairly high percentage of disc replacements fuse over time so why do it in the first place (their line of thinking). You should do well if your doc does a fair number of these.

I’ve had two at southeastern spine institute. Great results. Can’t even tell it’s been done. I do everything I’ve always done with no issues

Woke up pain free from the surgery. It was like a freaking miracle! Only regret is I haven’t stretched enough over the years to keep mobility.

I know of tow people that have had successful surgeries like yours.
One was was the father of an ex Clemson roommate....back around 2001 I think. The other was a coworker. My ex-roomies Dad said after the surgery his neck was souch better that he could even paint a ceiling without any issues (!)
Both were very pleased with the results.
Good luck and God bless.

I didn’t have it for the neck but the back. As long as you get it fused you’ll be fine.

I have C3/4-C4/5 fused, surgery and recovery was a breeze. Also had an ALIF on L3 - S1 in July of 23, took 18 months to fully recover. Massage therapy is my best friend. Arthritis is the cause of most of my problems now. Best wishes!
