I remember him, not exactly sure what you're referring to. I know he had a lingering lower back issue that never went away and had to quit playing

He was the a major reason Dabo got the job when Bowden was let go. He was the "Bell-cow". His relationship with Dabo the recruiter and commitment was crucial to that 2009 class even being legitimate. If Dabo wasn't able to keep him in the fold, we may have looked elsewhere for a coach.

he had a common lower back injury that just never went away. I don't think this occurred enough to change the way the whole strength and conditioning program was run. it was one player, wasn't happening continuously.
Kevin Hogan was hired a few seasons later and he does primarily work with offensive linemen, but the general core of the program has not changed.
Sometimes big fellas have a hard time carrying all of that weight. Knees, lower back, very common issues with big guys all around the country, not just Clemson. Also, high school athletes sometimes come in with very weak lower backs because in high school all they were taught is load up the bar and get strong, no technique or auxiliary lifts to strengthen the lower back, core, etc.

He went to Christ church in g'ville. He had earned starting tackle position as a freshman and then injured his back during strength training prior to fall camp. I also remember him being introduced with his senior class and running down the hill. I'm not sure why he has input into the program now.

sometimes football does not become as important anymore when the work that is required is too much...along with the injury history....

In 1963 when I enrolled at Clemson College there was no weight program only the Cub Room in the basement of one of the frat houses. The jocks would sneak down there to work out with us. The football team did work on their necks back then by utilizing wrestler's bridges, so they had much bigger necks. The guys today are pencil neck geeks.

I believe he was one of Dabo's dandy dozen, and a highly regarded offensive lineman. Not sure how, but he injured his back, and could not play football. Dabo agreed to honor his scholarship anyway. I think to his players then, and future players, this act convinced them of the character of there coach. He could have thrown JK under the bus, but he did the honorable thing.

Can you imagine the swag he got from honoring this kid's scholly? That is stuff of legend. Coaches, kids, media and families don't forget those things.

Too bad he didn't ever see a snap. Last I heard Dabo let him on as a student coach. I haven't seen or heard from him much since then.

That Bowden and Phillips were on the mark. Phillips showed guts going with Dabo.

Tahj was a part of that class..He fell in love with CU after a chance encounter with Coach Bowden as a kid. The time a coach takes with a kid can speak volumes. This is the same story that Feaster's mom tell of Spurrier but in reverse.

but he didn't have anything to do with Dabo getting the job. Dabo's vision for the program and how he ran our recruiting camps is why he got the job. Btw, JK still works for former Tiger Leighton Cubbage.
