that went down to view the Titanic?
Not very likely they'll find any survivors, but I guarantee you that this company will be out of business soon due to lawsuits. I wonder, too, if any of the governments involved (US, Canada, UK and France) will bill them for any of the SAR vessels and aircraft. LOTS of resources and millions of dollars being utilized for something so frivolous as a tourist trip to see the Titanic. Even if the crew/passengers are still alive, it doesn't look like there's anyway to get to them short of raising the entire thing, if that's possible on such short notice.
Another big question is how this will impact future efforts to go down to view the ship. Especially if this thing crashed ONTO the Titanic or got fouled in the wreckage somehow and is entangled with it.
I'd think they'll likely want to try to recover this vessel, or its remains, as soon as they can locate it - for multiple reasons.
It sucks for the families involved, but the more I've read about this thing, the crazier it seems that anyone would pay a quarter million dollars to ride on it. X-box controller? Outdoor camping lighting? No emergency beacon? There's lots of times that wanting to do something on a budget can be a good thing. But diving 2 miles beneath the ocean surface?? No. I want the best, most reliable technology and gear that exists before I'd even consider it.

Side of the 🛌 again apparently. Bob is like the want to be hall monitor asking other students where their hall pass is and they just shove his face until he slides down the hall floors on his butt.

I remain cautiously optimistic that the sub and its passengers can be located and safely rescued, but with each passing hour, that is looking less and less likely.
Prayers for all involved.

Sad situation, but have to say that they knew what they were getting into. The detailed waiver that mentions death three times on the first page.
Can't say that I would want to be bolted into a big pipe and sent underwater. Nope. Not me.

I pray that they are found and are okay. The thing that I haven't heard mentioned much is the possibility of a catastrophic failure before they reached the bottom. The news reported that communication was lost an hour and a half into the decent which takes three hours. I hate to say this but if they are not to be rescued I hope this is the case in that they died instantly rather that waiting on the bottom to run out of air. This is such a tragedy. I wouldn't care if I was a multi billionaire, I don't think that this is something I would want to do. The videos on TV are free and better than a few minute few thru a small port hole.

that automatically brings it back to the surface if there is a loss of communication or power failure. For whatever reason, that didn't work which leads many to believe the submersible could be lodged in the wreckage of the Titanic or stuck in the mud on the bottom of the ocean. One of the media outlets reported that if just one of the subs propellers or thrusters fails, the submersible can't be steered or controlled.

After being on submarines, it blows my mind that people would consider paying to do it. If that thing goes down, you have a better chance of survival in a fist fight against a trio of Kodiak's toughest bears.

After 23 years in the Navy and over 28 years of sea time all on Submarines. We both know the depths are not a very forgiving place. We train continuously on how to combat fires, flooding, and countless other situations that could arise. No one on this submarine were trained to combat any of these situations.

But, I have heard the same things, and it sounds like the submersible was not very reliable with all the "after-market" items installed. I don't how the owner and/or his representatives are going to avoid multiple lawsuits. But, there are some Saul Goodmans out there who will get them off the hook.

I would try to steer clear of hobbies that involve a liability release. I also don't think you should be able to sue someone because you are mad that your relative chose to waive their rights and do something dumb - personal opinion.
Saul Goodman should have an easy time with this one.

EVERYONE involved is going to get sued if people die on that that thing. The plaintiffs may not prevail but there will still be countless lawsuits because when things don't go as planned, the first response is generally to look for someone else to blame and pay for it.

Ok, flying a plane and driving a submarine are 2 different situations. There isn’t anything in common with the 2. The pressures at sea are what makes driving them completely different. As far as I can see being a 23 year submariner, I wouldn’t have gone down on that with him for any amount of money. Much less paying. Though the game controller isn’t a problem. They are using game controllers on some things on a submarine on the newer classes. The idea is to have backups if they fail that can be immediately brought on line to take over.

What a craven little coward o2bn and a lot more of you sissies are. You would be too scared to sit on top of a rocket and jump start our manned space program. Horrors to man if you wusses had to go into the unknown frontier and settle the West. The airplane would never have gotten off the ground. None of you would walk the high steel and build our skyscrapers. None of you sissies would ever be lion tamers.
As cowardly as most of you are, I am scared to death to think what generation of scared sissies your offsprings will make.
Now go sit in your safe spaces and let real men lead the way.
And as for missing submarines, there are hundreds still missing from WW2. And they were all manned by real men.

So, the Wright Brothers, Sir Edmund Hillary, the Friendship 7 and Apollo astronauts, etc. should not be looked up to as heroes and brave pioneers because, you know, anyone and everyone should’ve, could’ve, would’ve done the same. Rather, it’s the people that do not risk their lives trying some dangerous endeavor that should be mocked as wimps and sissies?

The Bell Tolls for 52 American Submarines.
Having served on Submarines, I would rather take my chances settling the American Frontier as you at least had a fighting chance at survival when coming under attack. The Sea is unforgiving, and there are no wagons to circle. As long as time, Sailors have been fighting her to avoid winding up on the ocean floor. There are some places men don't belong and shouldn't seek out. I understand exploration and discovery but to venture out on a sightseeing tour with camping lights and Xbox controllers seems more foolish than brave. Best of luck to them, but in true Submarine fashion we jest at their misery.

So you’ve takin a submarine to depth? Do have any clue one how they operate? I did 23 years on them and as far as lost submarines go. The US Navy has lost 2 since WWII. The Thresher in 1963 and the scorpion in 1968. The Thresher changed how we do everything as far as safety goes on a submarine. But yes we have to take chances some. But not with inexperienced people. That was idiotic and foolish. If what they are saying about the CEO refusing to hire experienced Submariners then there’s no way in h€lol I would be going on this death trap for any amount of money. Much less paying $250K for it.

ironic in the fact that this vessel was boasted to have been constructed of the "best materials available, able to get to the depth of the Titanic with a comfortable safety margin." I doubt they are comfortable now, if they are still alive.
The Engineer in me could not resist doing a calculation. Atmospheric pressure is 14.696 psi, or 406.78 inches of water. The Titanic sits ~12,500 feet down. This is 150,000 inches. Doing the math, the pressure at that depth is 368.74 atmospheres, or in psi, it is 5,419 psi (pounds per square inch). That is the pressure that every square inch of the hull of that submersible is enduring right now, if it has not already been crushed.
That pressure is why a rescue mission is nearly impossible. Even if another submersible that was able to withstand the depth could be brought to the scene in time, it would not have the ability to bring the other one up in addition to itself. The only hope those people have is that they somehow could be rigged with a cable from another sub to the surface to bring them up, or somehow find a way to drop their ballast on their own. And, obviously, if they could do that, it would have already happened.
In all of this, the most unconscionable thing I find, is that evidently this submersible was not outfitted with a radio beacon? That seems like sheer lunacy. In ANY rescue situation, even if it had managed to surface after several hours lost, the ocean is HUGE. The chances of them coming up in an emergency right by their ship, to be visually spotted would be very slim.
It almost seems like the designers of this sub thought it was unsinkable, and thus did not have enough safety features on board. Does that sound familiar at all?

There is a reason that NASA looked to the Submarine Force when developing their Quality Assurance programs. They declared that deep submergence posed more risks than space travel. SUBSAFE is the precursor to all NASA safety checks.
I'm curious what type of QA the Titan had.

it would be at the mercy of those deep water currents. I don't know how well that thing can keep itself upright, but it could be tumbling along the bottom, or drifting at who knows what depth - all very much complicating the search. I'm surprised I haven't heard/read anyone talking about that element. That very much changes things as opposed to just searching in the immediate area of the Titanic wreck.

CEO with technical knowledge, drive, and a daredevil personality. Driving the organization and getting one that mirrored his personality. Dissenting internal voices expressing concern about safety or lack therof shut down or removed from the organization. External warnings/concerns ignored. This thing will turn into an organizational leadership case study after all is said and done.
No doubt the company/CEO put a positive spin or conveniently did not highlight ALL the risks / concerns. Maybe not due to a conscious attempt to mislead but instead because the CEO / organizational culture thought of all that as "silly".
If you do dangerous stuff that can kill you and do it for the thrill then you have to seriously accept that the outcome for you may in fact be a dirt nap.
My hope is that if they do find the sub and bring everyone back alive that they immediately throw the guy who brought is 19yr old son along for the ride back overboard. Take stupid risks if you want to but don't enable your kids to do the same thing for no good purpose.
