Got a 60 plus year old ash thats 10 ft from my house and probably 60 plus ft tall. Been slowly dying with large dead limbs overhanging part of our house. Gonna take some work to cut it right and drop it. Was quoted 3900 to cut it down. Got another guy tmr. Anybody know if that seems high or in line for that big of tree.

But hire a Yokek with no insurance, a crew of 1, a dull saw and a safety rope that's old..and maybe save a ton.

Yep, a friend of mine has had 1-2 cut down each year and I shake my head hearing the costs and what that would buy boat-wise!

It’s probably high…but you live in Rock Hill (I’m in Fort Mill) and we unfortunately have to pay a premium cause all the folks moving here from ‘other places’ have driven up the cost of everything and I can’t blame local contractors for making hay while the sun shines. When I have to get stuff done, I try to use a local company that knows me or my family…it helps some…but quotes are still high even for us locals.

Tree company insurance, extra crew to ensure the tree doesn't damage the structure, may require a special permit for dong on where you are.

I got quoted $2,000 for one 30 feet from my house. Much lower risk.

Seems a little high. You might want to try to haggle the price down. My parents had a tree cut down next to their house a couple years ago, and ended up getting it done for about half as much as the guy initially quoted them. I forget exactly how much they paid, though.

That sounds pretty accurate for the area. It also depends on the company and how they plan to cut the tree.

We had 3 smaller trees cut in our yard this summer and they had to cut them in sections because there wasn't enough room to drop them without knocking out a neighbor's fence. So we got several quotes--one company said they'd come in, remove a section of fence, cut the trees with a boom truck and chip them right in the back yard. Their quote was about $3000. Another company planned to just climb the trees, cut them in sections, and drag them out to the road to chip them. Their quote was like $7500 because it was a lot more time and work. We chose the first company and they did a great job.

It's been about 5 years but I had a 75 year old oak cut down thay was leaning toward and over the house and a huge elm cut back to get the limbs down that were hanging over the pool shed. Together it cost $3100 and that included chipping limbs and hauling away everything else. That was the best price I could get with someone that was insured.

In Greer, my neighbor was quoted $1600 for a medium Maple near his house. Another friend was quoted $3900 for a large Maple over her garage. The big tree deserved some skill and insurance. The medium tree I could do myself in about 3 hrs with no risk to the house.

Get an extension ladder and tie a rope 2/3 of the way up the tree. Then tie the long rope to a 4X4 truck and get someone to start cutting near the bottom of the tree (about 3 ft. from the bottom) and keep the rope tight as he cuts. The tree will fall wherever the truck pulls it. Of course make sure the rope is longer than the tree to avoid truck damage. We cut a few trees around our church this way and saved thousands of dollars.

Guy was real knowledgeable and not some shmo that doesn’t know anything but cut. Said 2200 to limb it but it would probably be temporary as the whole tree is in decline. Plus it gonna take some good equipment to get it down and away from house

The company we use mainly deals with heavy duty landscaping/grading, but they do tree removals on the side and are cheap. Only charges $500 a tree. Had 5 large pines taken for $2,500. Very professional, work fast and do a fantastic job cleaning up. Can’t beat that compared to these other companies that want a minimum of $1,500 for “light limb trimming”.

English Land Management. They’re out of Whitmire but travel all over Newberry, Laurens, Union, Fairfield, Greenwood, Lexington, Richland and Saluda counties. I believe they’ll go to Spartanburg and Chester counties as well. They also do small building/structure demo if anyone is in the market for that. The owner is Chase English, great guy. Phone number is 864-200-0110. They do free on-site estimates.

Yep. Just cut down a 100+ year old short leaf pine tree that was probably 2 feet dbh and about 10-12 feet from the back of my house. It died from infestation by southern pine beetle. It cost me as follows (estimates):

- 1 pint of mixed non-ethanol gas in my Husqvarna 372 xp saw ($1.50)
- 1 new Oregon chain for 20-inch bar ($12)
- borrowed a buddy’s truck with a Warn winch for 15 minutes ($ repayment to be determined)
- saved the equivalent of ~3 days on gym membership from climbing the tree (climbing treestand) to affix strap, cutting down and bucking and, dragging limbs into woods, cutting up the tree and busting into fat lighter with an old fashioned wood splitter - AKA a Go-devil maul ($-45?)
- 3 Plastic Stihl wedges ($15)
- 1 trip to town in old truck to fetch needed supplies ($10)

Climb tree up 25-30 feet and attach tow/pull strap. Attach to winch and tighten some, positioned winch to pull away from house. Important- Make sure truck is further distance from tree than the height of the tree! For this use a range finder to get height of tree…old fashioned HS geometry comes in handy. Notch tree in direction of fell. Plunge cut and set wedges with a maul. Cut back strap and slowly keep tightening wedges as buddy slowly tightens winch. Say timber when tree falls. Wear eye, ear protection and saw chaps. I’m glad my Dad taught me how to do work as a kid!

Just had 3 down. Huge dead pine that was leaning over my parking area that I paid a professional tree service $800 to take it down into the woods opposite my parking area. After it was down I cut it into about 3' lengths that I could handle and put in a trailer. Had another skinny, but tall dead pine that was leaning toward my neighbor's shed and my neighbor paid $200 just to have it felled into the woods on my side of the fence. Just finished 4 days work (several hours each day) cutting up and hauling a 60' Red Oak 500' to a ditch in my woods........ pain in the ###, but cost nothing but fuel for my chainsaw. I would have gladly paid, but couldn't wait for 3 weeks for a tree service to show up.

It's going to vary from size, house proximity, tree type, and number of cuts.

That sounds high, especially with not including a stump grind, however an Ash that size requires a lot of time and expertise to extract the many large branches. So not shocked either.

Get up to three quotes if you can on this and you'll find the right one, that's properly bonded in case of a mishap.

Several years back I got 3 quotes to remove 3 80-foot tall + Pines and medium-size Magnolia, all nestled between two houses and a back fence. Quotes were $6000, 4800, and 3600. $3600 team did a great job.

Just had a similar but much tighter Pine that did a quick die taken out the past few months. My $3600 guys quoted $2500 and my $4800 quote team bid $1700. $1700 did a great job.

Good luck, and Go Tigers!

4 years ago when we had just moved to Easley, we had 23 trees taken down. One was only about 10 ft from the house and maybe 40’ tall and another was a huge red oak about 25 ft from the house. Several others that were 50-60 ft tall and a bunch of smaller trees. These guys would throw a small cord with a weight on it over a branch high in the tree then use the small cord to pull a rope up, then they would attach the rope to their tractor and pull in the direction they wanted it to fall, sometimes pulling the rope around another tree to keep the tractor out of harms way. They dropped 23 trees, ground them up and hauled the chips away in about 6 hours. I think there were 6 or 7 guys total. No bucket trucks, no climbing. I could not believe what they got done in one day. Then a guy came the next day and ground the stumps in an hour. Total cost was $4500. It was a company out of Greenville named Arbor Masters. They were insured and all that. The only other quote we had was over $8000.

I don’t know if they would go as far as Rock Hill but the contact is Stephen Swafford (864) 901-4229.

I mean it definitely depends on where you live. If you are with a populated area like Greenville, Columbia, Charleston then that’s probably right.

I had a massive white oak cut down that was basically touching my house and had limbs hanging all over the roof. The previous owner loved that tree. It cost a little over $2000 in 2018. That’s in Edgefield county. I’ve had many cut down since and each one has been a little further from the house. Since 2021 when inflation started climbing things have gotten more expensive. So to be that’s probably about right. Maybe you could find someone that could save you a couple hundred. Definitely get a reputable Arborist.

I had a big tree (probably 45' tall) that I wanted trimmed up and a local licensed, insured company (I'm in Virginia) charged me $600 for about an hour's work. They used the same techniques you'd use to take one all the way down to the ground.

For reference, the neighbor's house is about 30 feet from mine with a fence in between, and they took it down no problem. Definitely worth the money. $3900 seems high.

Price sounds about right. When getting big tall trees cut down and hauled away and stump ground, it is a must to get a company that knows what they are doing. And those insured and bonded companies are not inexpensive. The equipment is very exspensive.

Call your insurance company. At two previous houses I owned, they actually paid for a portion of the costs. Large trees close to the house pose a threat for a future storm damage claim. One was easy, the second one required a lot of negotiating and convincing. It’s worth a call. Good luck.
