Numbers will bite us in the long run. 2017 low class of 14 came back to bite us because Only about half of that class turned into decent players. We’ve got to hit home runs in the 2023 class or we won’t maintain that run we had from 2015-2020.

We had 2 top ten classes during that stretch and the average class was ranked 16.1. Clemson was recruiting a lot of highly ranked players during that stretch.
The beginning of that stretch saw a class ranked 27th (combined with lower ranked classes before it) and those were teams that couldn’t get over the hump and compete for national championships.
That’s the correlation people are making and I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to go back to those days after the program has been established as elite.
It amazes me how people think it’s just business as usual and Clemson is guaranteed to be back in the playoffs from here on out. The Dabo era of dominance has never experienced coaching turnover and roster problems like this. The program is very much at a crossroads.

I try to always see our glass as full, but it was bc of the 4-5 star players that got us to where we've been. Dabo and this new coaching staff will have to work really hard to make sure that we keep up in recruiting high 4-5 star players bc, 3 star players won't keep our Tigers in the ranks of the elite.
We've pretty much had 3 star players that turned out to be pretty good player, but it was with an experience hands on coaching staff, and the coaching experience with this team at this point, just isn't what we can call experienced. Some of them will get to be really good hands on coaches, and some won't!!!!!

Great teams made possible by DW4, TL16, CW42, IS11 and Power Rangers. Without DW4 and TL16, there are no championships and these great Clemson teams are only very good teams.
Having the #1 QB in the country makes all the difference with recruiting imbalances ...

Wish we'd quit using that top 5 ranking. There's a lot of teams that could have claimed that in the past. In fact, I remember the coot radio using that in 2018 or 2017 or something. If you take every teams top 8 guys and use that average, we're not top 5. I want to say after the first signing day, I figured it at top 15 comparable. We're 25th overall and probably drop with the latest added in. Which that's ok. As long as we use the portal and really have an immediate impact class in 23. Guys that can start in 23 season.

Because we brought in on early signing day 8, maybe 9 kids (kickers not included in rankings) . so our player ranking of 5 is compared to the 9 guys we brought in vs the avg 21 players brought in by the other schools. It's not bad what I'm saying, just misleading. It's just numbers that gets spun as if we had a top 5 class. No, we had the 25th ranked class. That's all. Hth explain where I was coming from.

I think right now we are aiming to just get some depth on this team that desperately needs it at almost every position. I am ready to see some D-line commits though considering that and WR are our biggest needs currently.
I never doubt out DB "projects" though. They always turn out to be gems by year 3 or 4 and contribute a lot.

Huh? D-line is most definitely a need for this class. Maybe not in a numbers standpoint sure. But it is most definitely a need to grab 2/3 at least. I think if I remember correctly, we will be riding into next season with only 1 d-lineman that's not a JR. or SR. or 5th/6th year SR. So unless we want to have a experience gap that will bite us in the future, we need people at that position.

(neither is definite given they currently have multiple years of eligibility left), Ruke and Ruben have multiple years left, Williams’s and Page have 3 years left, Capehart 4. We’ll sign 2-3 next year and #s are where they are now. DE Murphy has multiple years left but you would think he migh go after next year. Mascoll still has 2 years not 1. Swint,Patterson, Denhoff and Williams also have multiple years left. I imagine we pick up 1 here but focus will be bringing in a couple for 2023.

Yeah, we're good with receivers and dline. Star rated Receivers can play as freshman, dline and CB not too many. What we need is a portal CB or two that are ready to play this season. Preferably one that can assume the role of shutdown corner.
I like the commit because we do need some that understand scout team and development is their route to the field.

Our staff has found some real diamonds in the rough in the past.
Guess what? Every power 5 school has some similar examples.
At this point, we are just trying to fill all of our available scholarships, plain and simple. This isn’t to say that this young man isn’t very talented, because he clearly is. I truly believe that our coaches want him on our team and see the potential with him. But please spare us the CIA, undercover intel intrigue and all that stuff. If our coaches were planning this top secret heist of an unknown prospect all along, they wouldn’t have waited until mid-January to offer him a scholarship.

95% of the 2 star and no star players don't end of making an impact. Just a small percent. Majority of the time it is the 4 and 5 star players that win national championships.
Dabo's way didn't work this year. He hasn't figured out how to deal with the portal. BV leaving also took some recruits away.

How many potential 5 stars are there as opposed to 3 stars?
Jan 16, 2022, 9:09 PM

|
There simply aren’t many 5 stars each year in the recruiting rankings. There are plenty of 3 stars.
If you look at the numbers, a 5 star recruit is much more likely to make it to the NFL than a 3 star recruit.

in previous years is no longer working, for whatever reason(s).
Due to missing on some key targets, as well as losing guys to the portal, we are now in a situation where we need to fill out our roster.
This isn’t me “bashing” our program. This is me simply stating the truth.
Hopefully our staff has learned some good lessons the last couple of years and we will see an improved approach moving forward.

Yeah, another "project". you know, like Nolan Turner, Hunter Renfrow, Isaiah Simmons, Kobe Pace, Mason Trotter, Jordan McFadden, Chase Brice, James Skalski, Tanner Muse, The Davis Twins, Jordan Leggett, Cordrera Tankersley, TJ Green...All 3 stars or less! I would hate to think where we would have been without them!

Exactly our best teams were filled with two and three stars, clemson does it clemsons way. Can find plenty of teams who sign a lot of five stars who wish they’ve won as much as clemson has.

Our best teams were filled with 5 star generational talent at key positions.
Yes, we certainly got contributions from less heralded guys, but make no mistake - without elite talent we wouldn’t have won squat.
Example: 2021 season. We had elite talent, just not enough of it, plus plenty of 3 and 4 star players, and we didn’t win our conference, didn’t win our division, didn’t make the playoffs, and didn’t even make a New Year’s Day bowl.

Gallman was a consensus 4* with a 91 rating. He was recruited by major p5 schools, Oklahoma, uga, Florida, Mich and many more.
Not saying this kid won't pan out but he doesn't even have a star rating. No one is saying anything about 3 * players. Most of the 3* talent that's referenced on here were p5 offers and high 3 star ratings.
Sure you have outliers that are usually given a pwo or a scholly after the class has been filled out. No one is dissing on the kid for calling him a project. But people act like these are 5* hidden talent and that Dabo knows more than any other coach by offering him. All coaches do that.
The Turners are old friends with Dabo. He found room for him as he does for many players.

I feel like this guy or Turner would be a nice, feel good take if we already had a class of studs, but we don't. These guys may turn into something but the fact of the matter is only lower tier G5 schools were recruiting them, and that sort of tells you what they are as players. Sure there are some guys like Adam Humphries, Ryan Carter and Hunter Renfrow you take a chance on, but you aren't beating Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State or even the better level ACC teams with these type of players. This has been a tough cycle with coordinators leaving and an "off" season for the team, but we were behind the 8-ball in numbers to begin with. It's time for Dabo to get with the program and play hard ball like all the other big boys are doing.

Don't put too much on the star rankings. If a kid plays in a tough league he might not look as good as a five star with easy opponents and a stellar supporting cast.
Look at guys like Hunter Johnson. A 5 star that is a good kid, but in college play at 3 star at best. Hundreds of similar stories every year. The transfer portal is full of 4 stars disappointed that they are not good enough to be starters or the primary goto.
We all have our worries about recruiting, but getting recruits to commit should be a good thing not a cause for worries.

His film looks pretty impressive to me. Welcome aboard, young man! Wishing him nothing but the very best performances and outcome in his career as a Tiger.

Don't understand all the hate on here about a guy choosing Clemson to continue his football career. From what I could see from the video we are getting a guy with great ball skills. Welcome to Clemson.
