Garrett Riley on "window dressing"

I asked Garrett about the "window dressing" or "eye candy" piece that seemed to be lacking in the first few games but has improved in the last two. Here is his answer

"It's kind of a catch-22 22 a little bit at times. You do want to have the window dressing and try and create eye violations and try and make it hard on the defense, but at the same time, you've got to be mindful of not maybe making it harder on you specifically with the line. The more movement there is, the more the blocking changes for them, especially if you're talking about running game. But yeah, I mean I think utilizing that and having that as a tool within our system certainly has been good to us the last couple of games, but I also think we got to do what we do, too, and do what we've been practicing and doing, finding ways to really just get in the rhythm and get in the flow of the game better than what we have in these first couple of games."

With a veteran OL, this shouldn't be an issue this year.***

about the O'line with Trevor and Deshaun. I rewatched a 20 min clip of Trevor amazing plays and our O'line was absolutely bulletproof in comparison to now.

Just a really wild difference.

There seems to be revisionist history that we never had good o-lines... meanwhile Tyrone Crowder, Mitch Hyatt, and Taylor Hearn used to run people into the ground. We've had very good o-lines during Dabo's golden age

The almost there mentality fails to address problems we have had for several years.....it seems like if we don't score for 25 yards out we don't score. I might be wrong, but in the red zone it seems like we can chew up 2 1/2 minutes and end up with a field goal or turnover more often than td's. It's been that way for a while.
..doing the same inefficient thing does not fix it.

Being able to run alot of plays on a drive is good in one sense and increases your chances of turning it over in another.

No misdirection. Very little motion outside of Randall or a slot receiver. This is the most plain vanilla offense in a long while.

I'm sorry dude but "doing what we have been doing" is not the right answer.

When something doesn't work you don't keep doing it. That's literally the definition of insanity! You change it to try and make it work better.

Not like Dabo can fire Riley and run the offense himself.

He’s a fricking we coach!

this to me is as close as he’s come to outright admitting that his playcalling is hampered by the ability of his players. If you can’t do something as simple as giving the defense eye-candy with misdirections, I don’t know what to say - that is shockingly bad.

and that is what summer workouts are for. Implementing your system. Training

your personnel. This the main issue with our offense and is what I suspected. They haven't been trained or coached properly. So something that could help our team is scrapped b/c its a pain to teach. Instead we revert to basic offensive play calls b/c its easier and we won't make as many mistakes. This is why we need a proven OC that knows how to implement his system from top to bottom. No more newbies no more "give him a chance" guys. Get an expert that knows what he's doing.

As far as Tom Allen i think he'll be fine once he's been here a while but I think he needs to be able to bring in some guys from outside our system that he has confidence in that will help him implement. He's also got a pretty crummy group of DBs that are just in lala land and not committed. He needs to be able to bring in the players he chooses and make way for a handfull of assistant coaches that he's confident in.

And then Dabo needs to transition into portal recruiting. Try it out, win a championship agains with it.. and then drop the job like a bad habit and walk out of the stadium like Dan Devine did against Clemson after they beat us.

Riley wasn't hired to run his system...

He was hired to run Clemson's system.

But how bad are we that we can't use pre-snap shifts or motion because the O-line can't adjust their blocking schemes.

That's not what summer workouts are for. In fact, that kind of skill training by coaches is prohibited in the summer.

The strength coaches get to work with the players over the summer. But even film work is limited to 2 hours a week.

No practices or training with position coaches is allowed. Players can work together on the field, but that's it.

I think some of our issue on Defense: the bad tackling, pour pursuit angles, proper lane identification, etc is a symptom of an accumulation of bad coaching for 3 years under Wes. While I don't like all of Allen's defensive approaches, when it comes to our guys you can't coach out 3 years of bad habits/poor coaching in just one spring, summer and fall camp. Though this also does not reflect well on the rest of defensive coaches. I thought some of them are suppose to be good coaches and should have been able to over come Wes's lack of experience.

Now, that being said, once lack of effort is seen in a player, I don't get why the coaches aren't parking that players butt on the bench. Even if the next player isn't as "experience, or good" their energy for playing might make all the difference.

So it is almost as if his efforts will not affect the outcome of games

I remember when Riley arrived. He promised to simplify the offense (aka playbook) in order to eliminate mistakes and improve performance. If that was true, it would appear our lack of sophistication has also made it easier for opposing teams to stop us, especially in the red zone.
