Don;t worry clover, you will never fly in one of these, and there is only one reason.

Re: An electric aircraft just completed a journey of 1,403 miles

For years, I flew a lot for work and personal travels. There were times when I didn't enjoy flying, like in storms or landing in high winds but I never worried much about the engines. I will say I'll probably drive or stay home before getting on an electric plane. There's just something about falling out of the sky because of a bad battery that doesn't appeal to me. There are no charging stations a few miles high.

on fire....At least you have a chance to put out a gas fire. Battery fires look like a bomb went off to me.My beddy that rigged my trolling motor for my kayak really opened my eyes to what can happen with an electrical fire. If I had a child that had to ride an all electric bus to school and I could not drive them myself, I would home school them...and they would just have to overcome the instructor.

Sure, you just have to notify AAA and reach through the window and plug into their charging station as they fly by.

That is true but they hold enough fuel to get from point A to point B with more to spare and go the 2000 miles between Atlanta and LA in less than 4 hours. I guess for a 12 day journey to travel 2000 miles by electric plane, they will land at popular tourist destinations so you'll have something to do while the plane is charging up. A whole new tourist business may be budding here. Book your excursions when you buy your tickets.

the wright brothers first plane flew 180 feet, 16 years later we flew a plane around the world. People should be excited, instead all I see is politically charged pessimism. You can point you finger at a handful of innovative people that made this world better because they were driven and never gave up on their ideas. Going by the responses on this thread, it saddens me to see so many Clemson grads that lack any sort of vision or understanding or interest in technology, I mean really sad.

The politically charged pessimism stems from attempts to shoehorn unproven or undeveloped technologies into the market, rather than letting them evolve naturally.
Similarly, it also stems from trying to restrict or eliminate proven technologies that are essential to the economy, and modern life in general.
If you want these technologies to take root, stop pushing them into the market before they are ready, and as a result develop a negative reputation with the public.

Sorta like the old stage coach routes. It will be tough making a trip with all the marauding bands bands of illegals raiding, looting and pillaging along the way. They will have 9mm that will blow the lung out of the body and all we will have is our trusty 22 cal single shot to defend our selves with.

There won’t be any way a battery powered plane could ever generate enough thrust to gain a comfortable cruising altitude carrying the weight of its own battery load, much less humans or cargo.

That's the cold hard facts. I am waiting on some of you techno-greens to provide me with the formula for what it will take to replace a 737 Max with your junk science. I'll bet you can't do it because you have been gut hooked into believing your own crap.

Green or not, it's not going to matter after Putin and Russia destroys the U.S. with 5 nuclear bombs as I read about yesterday. But just in case any of us survive, brushing up on fire building skills may be more beneficial.

I don’t know anything about electric airplanes.
I know a little bit about NiCad batteries in Turbine Aircraft. If a NiCad battery reaches thermal runaway, it will depart the aircraft via the hole that in burns out the bottom of the aircraft.

Depends…..they’ll fly fine down low…..but they fly pretty poorly after the pilots pass out.

Just want to say that I am glad I wasn't on that flight. When you see a port for a cigarette lighter mounted in the controll panel, you know you might be in trouble. All the cigarette lighter "jump starters" on earth won't help a bit. Comedian Ron White said, he was on a short flight from Ottwa to Montreal and an engine caught fire. The passenger next to him asked, how far can this plane go on one engine? White responded "all the way to the scene of the crash!"
