Alum vs. Non-Alum Thoughts

Oct 19, 2016, 3:05 PM

As far as athletics go, it's ridiculous to say alums are "better" sports fans than non-alums. For example, my father didn't go to Clemson but he was an IPTAY member and season ticket holder for 30+ years.

I do think there's a difference, though, when it comes to the academic side. I think it's accurate/fair to say that people who graduated from Clemson pay more attention to the academic side of things mainly because they feel a closer connection to the academic side of things. But yes, there are plenty of non-graduates who give big bucks to academics - of course there are.

I graduated from Clemson and am proud to say that Clemson is my school. But I'm grateful to non-alum Clemson fans and academic supporters because they don't have to be - they choose to be.

There wouldn't be a school without the Alums...

Oct 19, 2016, 3:07 PM

With that said people are trolling you. Who care? Clemson's athletic depart sure as heck doesn't.

And we'd be a mid-major in sports without the non-alums. Why this division in times like these?

Go Tigers!

Are they different? Yes. Is one better? No

Oct 19, 2016, 3:18 PM

Both groups can be great fans. There is no difference to quality. The only difference is their experiences and perspective with Clemson. As an alum, my experience and perspective is as a student and all that comes with that, including athletics. For non-alums, their experience is simply different.

The thing that amuses me is that of all the Clemson fans I know and have known, the most rabid and vocal are the non-alums. The alums I know, while dedicated to the university and teams, aren't always so feverish about their sports. The only thing I can figure is that for the non-alum, their Clemson experience revolves mostly around sports and the brand, while the alum experience is more based upon the college experience. Not to say that there aren't rabid, dedicated alums, but just talking from my admittedly limited experience.

The university, and athletic teams, are made up of both, though - no one is better than the other in any way. Just different in their perspective and experience, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm grateful for all Clemson fans!

Re: Alum vs. Non-Alum Thoughts

I agree 100 percent. Non-alumni were the first people I met when I moved to SC in the 80's. To me non-alumni where more likely to give to IPTAY because it gave them a sense of belonging to the program.

I don't think that's allowed here.

Alum vs Non Alum

Oct 19, 2016, 3:34 PM

As an alum I realize that there are people that didn't attend Clemson that were way more die hard than I was when I showed up at Clemson. I never even thought about Clemson until a year before I got there. At that stage, I couldn't even name one Clemson player or even one coach. I had never heard of Danny Ford, although Hatfield was the coach when I arrived. I never heard of him either. O vaguely even knew the Tiger Paw. Clemson football was a non factor in California where I was raised. I was 9 when Clemson won the national title. it wasn't a big deal in my house. There are kids that grow up in South Carolina that have their rooms completely decked out in Clemson gear and are fanatics, but they never attend Clemson. One of my best buddies is a huge Clemson fan from Charleston, but he went to UVA because it was a better school academically, especially at the time. Is he not a real fan? He can name he 2 deep now and doesn't miss a game. I think being a true fan is just how loyal you are and how much you enjoy following Clemson football. Then again, I am not from South Carolina and maybe I am missing something.

Go plop a 90k seat football stadium in the middle of Ware

Shoals, SC, with no campus around it or college associated with it. Lemme know how many people show up to your games.

alum vs non alum football game in the works??***

Thank you. My family is 40 years IPTAY yet...

Oct 19, 2016, 4:30 PM

we've only had a couple of family members attend Clemson but none of us have actually obtained a degree (for one reason or another). It started with my Dad joining IPTAY, buying tickets, fund raising etc over the years. His name is on the stadium for his donations and support. Attended nearly every home football game, all bowl games etc. Nobody bleeds orange more than we do. I get pretty upset when I tell an Alum that and have to endure funny looks and their elitist attitudes. I guess our money and support is only welcomed if we have the sheep skin? Com'On Man!

So thank you for speaking up on this.

GO TIGERS!

When I hear Clemson family I think of everyone, not just alumni.

Amen brother. And I do mean brother figuratively within the "family". Good to belong !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm reminded of all the "Miami" fans...

Oct 19, 2016, 4:44 PM

Recall the 90's when Miami was all the craze. There were folks in NY wearing Miami ball caps who probably had no clue where Miami was even located. And, lets not mention their thuggery "fans" who would show up for home games for the sole purpose of harassing the opponent fans only because their next drug deal wasn't scheduled to go down for several hours.

The difference is this: Miami alums are forever tied to the University whether they like it or not. The bandwagon fans simply take their ball caps off and move on to the next popular team. I would assume the thugs are wearing Bama caps now. I have no doubt we got some wagon hitchers that will some day be a "fan" of another school. So easy for the unassociated fan to do this whereas the alum left a part of themselves in Clemson and vice versa.

I'm very happy we have dedicated Clemson fans as their contributions cannot be denied.

Back in my day, I had to go to work straight

Oct 19, 2016, 5:13 PM

out of high school. I did send a son and had a grandson who finished Clemson summa ### laude. I also was employed by the Clemson Athletic Dept. for 9 years. Am I less of a fan of the whole school than an alum?

Re: Alum vs. Non-Alum Thoughts

Oct 19, 2016, 5:40 PM

I've got two Clemson degrees. My brother in law didn't attend the school, but he's one of the biggest fans I know. In my opinion, you really hit on the major difference, and it becomes most clear when there's some type of conflict between athletics and the overall university. President Barker shook my hand twice as I walked across a graduation stage. I think he did great things for the school. When Dwight Jones wasn't admitted to play football, I watched "fans" call for his head. I've pulled for the football team since I was 5 years old, but the school itself will always be far more important to me.

One side of that argument takes all this stuff to heart.

Grad do not.

Bc the grad, when engaged in this argument , tends to do so with his/her nose in the air.

For what reason, maybe you could tell me?

i am an alum

Oct 19, 2016, 6:00 PM

i don't donate to IPTAY
i only make it to a game a year
i participate in solid orange friday every week
i have a wife that is an alum
i went to the gator bowl in 1996
i went to the peach bowl in 1998
i went to the ACC Championship game in 2011 and bought tix before we played WF
i left at halftime as a student and usually didn't go back in
i woo hoo

am i a true fan?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not one to judge but: Not a true fan...

Oct 19, 2016, 6:05 PM

You were doing so well and then the frickin' woo hoo comes into play. You can salvage your title as a fan if you quit the woo hoo (in my opinion) :)

GO TIGERS!!!

Re: Alum vs. Non-Alum Thoughts

Oct 19, 2016, 6:02 PM

Thanks tiger77 for your insight. This is a very polarizing subject and should be a non issue as a result. Let's face it, Clemson is a business that needs funds to grow and be competitive. Just read some of the complaints today about raised memberships. I don't think they will turn down your money at IPTAY or simply buying a soda at concessions on game day. If you feel that biased about non alums, then start asking for proof of "citizenship" and refuse the funds if it can't be produced. Don't think that will ever happen so the "family" keeps flourishing, regardless of status. Some people are experiencing tough issues at home and being a Tiger is very refreshing no matter if you're an alum or not. Remember that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need to stop this nonsense.

Oct 19, 2016, 7:50 PM

I'm an alum, but I don't go to football game and ask if other Clemson fans are alums. They're wearing orange and it's all good with me.

That's the way it should be. Period, paragraph ! Thank you for your support on this topic. Maybe this will die down a little so we can enjoy ourselves again. Geez
