Speed trap on Easter
Apr 18, 2022, 9:00 AM
|
|
I had to run out to the store Sunday before our big meal because apparently I don't know how to pick out strawberries properly on the previous day. As I ventured, I saw that Mount Pleasant PD had set up a speed trap on Highway 41. On a road that generally doesn't see much speeding because it's got so many people on it.
I'm trying to avoid the P&Rishness of this, but #### like this is why I don't get the blind adoration of law enforcement. This is a jerk move. It's Easter. People are probably either doing what I'm doing or on their way to see family.
Yeah, yeah, "But they're trying to keep us safe on a holiday!" No, they're trying to generate revenue on people who might be running a little behind on that day and they're pissed off they have to work.
Maybe some of us would be more supportive of cops if we didn't feel like they were always playing "gotcha" with us.

and protect, not catch us doing something. It always feels like police are out to "catch" you and maybe those two things go hand in hand, but it is framed in a way that creates so much distrust in the police (and this doesn't include the actual shady cops who do bad things and get away with it because they are policia)

I don't think I've ever been able to go faster than about 35 on it due to traffic.

dismiss that cops enforcing speed limits isn't, at least in part, about keeping the public safe?
I say that as someone who does not generally adhere to the speed limit...but if I get caught, that's on me....not the cop for catching me speeding. Unless the cops are doing something underhanded, like changing the speed limit sign without telling anyone, then why is it a "trap"?

the cops dressing up like construction workers so they could clock people coming off the bridge without anyone knowing. Cops playing dress up to catch speeders? The cops in N Charleston have to be laughing at them for nonsense like that.
I could make a list of things of needless "law enforcement", but the simple fact is that the MPPD has been weaponized for revenue generation, and always have been as long as I can remember.

Like a particular road. But I drive Highway 41 a lot; not only are they never doing traps there, but it's usually a backed up roadway. I also have enough experience with the MPPD to know THAT particularly department doesn't give two ##### about safety.

Seriously, I'm missing the outrage/point here to a certain extent.
To me, you're either speeding or not speeding. If you're speeding and get a ticket...well, that's on you.
If you're not speeding and get a ticket, then that's wrong and should be fought.

Because I didn't see him with anyone pulled over.
My point is that it's a major holiday on a road that isn't known for speed problems and an agency that cares more about revenue generation than safety. It's "gotcha". Yeah, if someone's speeding, they broke the law. But that's what MPPD tries to do.
Maybe it would be nice if they actually did their jobs after people are actually killed on Mt. P roadways, which they don't really seem to care about.

The issue here is not patrolling for speeding, but using a tool that is designed for revenue generation, and on a holy holiday for that matter.

exclusively. That's the problem. Last week NC had a week dedicated to pulling over drivers going even 1mph over the speed limit. That's the mentality of speed traps versus standard enforcement. That's the problem here.

effective one. It's easy to point a radar gun and pick someone off. It's not as easy to pull a left lane hog, or someone not using a turn signal, or someone on their phone (in states where it's illegal), or someone blowing through a yellow/red light, or a tailgater, but all of those are driving behaviors that are far more detrimental to overall road safety than speeding, yet they're largely ignored by police.
Cops targeting speeders in the name of traffic safety (as their primary effort) is like an oncologist charging patients to take their BP and listen to their lungs as their primary effort in the name of cancer treatment.

and saying here without much "ompf".
I pull a lot of time on the interstate each week. I've seen ppl get pulled over for tailgating a few times recently. One was actually on my tail as I was going fast in the left lane behind traffic while passing cars in the right lane. I saw lights go on 2 cars back and thought we were all going to get pulled for speeding. Both of us got into the right lane and cop pulls to the left of us and we both pulled over. Cop came up to me (in front) and told me I could leave...he was after the guy behind me for following too close. I told him the guy was a jackarse and had been riding me close for some miles.
Now, that is 100% anecdotal in nature...but I don't think it's fair throw out blanket statements that fixed speed enforcement is bogus because cops aren't patrolling and enforcing other dangerous behavior.
Anyways...we've probably beaten this horse to death at this point.

Everyone in here doing the "if you don't speed..." BS. You speed. You know you do. We all do. Don't pretend you're setting your cruise control right on the speed limit every time.
There is 0.0 percent chance any one of you doesn't ever break the law in some way, shape, or form while driving.

Or parking in parking lot with a boat trailer. Or going too slow. Or driving a golf cart. Or driving after 1 am. Or living in a house that someone they used to be after lived in.
There's about a million ways to break the law in Mt P that don't seem to exist anywhere else.

Especially on the Interstate, but that's still speeding in some cops' eyes. At least, by the law it is.
I had an MPPD officer pull me years ago on Coleman after leaving a bar on my way to IOP just after dinner time. I had one beer at dinner. I saw him coming and made sure I set the cruise to the limit. He pulled me. I had my old vehicle then that probably looked more like a teenager's car. He seemed very surprised when he walked up and found a bald dude in his late 30s. And one who was sober at that.
He said he pulled me because my license plate light was out, and this was just a warning. When I got to my destination, I checked it. It worked fine.
Dude was trolling for a ticket or an arrest. I wasn't doing anything wrong and he lied about why he pulled me. Again, this is more of a Mt. P problem; I don't expect this to happen downtown or Up Chuck.

Because of insurance. I'm not telling you everything because you don't need to know. I'm not in a hurry. I don't care.

all that, you had to go thru Mauldin to get to the beach. And it was a notorious speed trap town. The old saying for Greenvillians was - if you can get past Mauldin, you're home free all the way to Myrtle.

They would sit right at that bend coming off 385 where it went from 55 to 35 with almost no warning, and then it was 35 all the way to the Dukes plant.

somewhat controversial sayings and jabs... there was one that I quoted many times over the years, but I cannot pull it out of my memory right now, galddanggit. I do remember that some were critical of our state leadership in Columbia... "sumptin sumptin 90 miles ahead". I swear, when I remember the classic quote he had one time, I will post it. This is frustrating that I cannot think of it right this minute.
