For Clemson fans claiming "the sky's not falling"....

Sep 8, 2021, 4:28 PM

Coach Caldwells O-line has been severely lacking for years. He did nothing with Jackson Carmen. Bockhorst gets manhandled every game like he's paying for the abuse. And here's what we have on the team (vs UGA below)

Clemson Oline:
5 stars: 1
4 stars: 9
3 stars: 5
2 stars: 1
Walk On: 4
Total: 20
Total Stars: 63

UGA OLine:
5 stars: 5
4 stars: 11
3 stars: 5
2 stars: 1
Walk on:
Total: 22
Total Stars: 86

Perhaps certain Clemson fans fail to see that while UGA has accomplished little in the last decade, they still recruit at a far higher pace on the Oline.....and that's with their brand new coach/former Ole Miss failure, Matt Luke.

What does this mean? It means that when given the chance, high end OLine recruits would rather attend UGA, than a Clemson.

That's a coach issue. One that I guarantee the competitors use against Clemson.

It obviously means if we just had an average OL, we would never lose a game. We’ve been punching above our weight for ever.

But yet the teams were neck and neck the whole game so what is your point. From what you just posted, it looks like Clemson is doing more with less. Stars are much different but return on investment is not.

Re: For Clemson fans claiming "the sky's not falling"....

Sep 8, 2021, 4:55 PM

Yes, Clemson does more with less. I thought everyone knew this.
Check out average recruiting rankings when we won it all in 2016 and 2018.
Based on recruiting, Bama should NEVER lose a game. Ever.

But if we just had a reasonable OL we often have a punchers chance and sometimes it ends up 44-16.

Nope.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL. 3 points.

Sep 9, 2021, 6:07 PM

Please read slower. Comprehension is the key.

Look, UGA has clearly outrecruited Clemson for years. Georgia won two big games in the playoff era - Oklahoma and Clemson. Clemson lost the game.

UGA has nothing to show for all that recruiting.

And before you jump on that SEC jockstrap, Clemson has played overall harder schedules every year but one in the CFP era. And we won ton more big games. 2nd most playoff wins, 4 of 7 national title games, and 2 of 7 national titles.

Clemson is the 2nd best team in the playoff era, hands down. Georgia has ONE playoff appearance.

Clemson does more with less, and Georgia does less with more.

Sep 8, 2021, 4:52 PM

Leon Trotsky posted the entire rosters of both teams before the game. Think uga had like 19 5* players to our 9 or 10.

Not to discount what you're saying because it does get used against us that we aren't good at putting oline in the NFL. That said, I don't think we necessarily have to have NFL oline. You can have great college olineman.

And swimmer is correct, we have punched above and won 2 nattys. Now, what does puzzle me is why haven't we seen a bump in recruiting with as much dominance we've achieved over the last decade. We're consistently on the outside of uga, osu, Bama and then a few more.

Not that star power is everything, it's usually a good barometer on how teams do. We leave zero room for error and yes, it bites us and is.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually things have improved

Sep 9, 2021, 3:49 AM

If you look at the 2020 and 2021 recruiting classes we have been getting mostly 4 and 5 star kids on the OL. And we have 4 and 5 star kids committed for 2022. So we are finally getting quality recruits for the Oline.

Problem is OL is arguably the hardest position to scout project and develop and it often takes a few years to develop them at this level because most need to get stronger and most got by on size in high school but at this level technique is critical.

So it’s a difficult position to recruit, scout, develop and it takes time and a lot of them get hurt. Which is why Ford typically took 5 OL in every recruiting class whereas we often only take 3 or 4 now.

And after all of that to make things even more complicated you have to get 5 of them to work together as a group on the field.

Part of the problem Saturday was we had a starting guard out and Bockhorst was moved to center from his natural position of guard. We played like crap but I bet had we played Georgia week 2 or 3 they would have played significantly better. We desperately needed a warmup game or two for this Oline to gel given the situation. Playing a defense like Georgia week one was a tough draw.

But we have better talent now that past years but they are young and inexperienced and more help is on the way, which is why I have posted numerous times that I’m willing to be patient a little longer BUT we need to see significant improvement next season. If not the excuse won’t be talent. The problem will be pretty obvious at that point: coaching.

Sep 8, 2021, 4:53 PM

Georgia's recruiting is terrific. They deserve credit. Their ROI is not terrific. They've been losing exactly 3.33 games per season since 2003. Indeed, Clemson does more with less. :)

Re: For Clemson fans claiming "the sky's not falling"....

UGA plays in the SEC.

3 out of the last 6 loses we've had were to SEC teams.

If we played in the SEC, would our ROI be terrific? Most likely not. We've been able to hide our inefficiencies for years behind weak conference play and superb QB/WRs.

Again….the conversation is “oline”…..not championships. Our oline has sucked for the last 3 years, minimum. Oddly enough, each of those years has resulted in at least one tumultuous *** beating by an alternate conference winner.

I reeeeeeaaaaally don’t understand why it’s so difficult to equate 3 years of embarrassing losses with the overt numbers showing our complete fallout in the running game.

Yeah buddy. The ACC gauntlet. Keep in mind, we’ve coughed games to Pitt and Cuse, #### near lost to NC State 2 years ago, almost lost to BC last year and did lose to an over ranked ND last year.

Don’t get ahead of yourself. I’m well aware that 80% of the SEC is absolute trash. Unfortunately 95% of the ACC is as well.

Sep 9, 2021, 10:17 PM [ in reply to Re: For Clemson fans claiming "the sky's not falling".... ]

You can't extrapolate 3 games over the course of 4 years. Plus when we beat the SEC champion that means we could beat everyone they did. We lost 2 games to national champions and this one against UGA. Seems we'd be in exactly the place we are now, with the same ROI.. that is, 2nd best in the playoff era.

We had won 11 straight regular season games vs the SEC prior to Saturday.

Good game, Georgia (and SEC jocksniffers). But please don't pretend as if you've finally got over that dog-choke hump.

Call it sour grapes, but we lost that game, Georgia didn't take it. Even with the play of the OL, a seasoned QB and we win.

Why are you using CFP appearances as a measuring stick. Georgia usually has to go through the eventually NC just to make the playoffs while we play some unranked 3-4 loss the in the ACCCG. All you needed to say was 2 NCs in 5 years to their 0. Everything else you mentioned would more than likely get you laughed at outside of our fanbase because it holds no weight.

did not roll up a bunch of yardage on the ground. They only had 121 yards rushing, and 135 yards passing. Clemson had 178 yards passing, and due to 7 sacks only finished with 2 yards net rushing. From your OL recruiting information, the only bump was UGA had five 5 stars to Clemson's one 5 star.

The four stars, three stars, and two stars are almost identical.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: UGA's OL was not impressive at all Saturday. They

Sep 9, 2021, 10:22 AM

"...the only bump..." ???

The ONLY bump was our inability to keep UGA from sacking our QB at will......
The ONLY bump was our inability to open up any lanes for our running game...
The ONLY bump was watching FIVE clemson linemen get man-handled by THREE uga linemen.

If those 3, 4 and 5 stars are "identical" - then what's our excuse for losing 4 of the last 5 marquee match ups? Bad luck? Nope.

We have a mediocre Oline, capable of pushing ACC teams around and nothing more. OLine coach needs replacing.

Clemson FB is now a business. It should be run like one. If there's a weak link, you replace it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 9, 2021, 11:01 AM

But three or four of those sacks were because of DJ.

Not denying that he held the ball too long.

Also not denying that a first year starter **** his pants a few times after getting whipped by NFL caliber DL's.

There's only so many times that kid was going to take another brutal sack before not trusting his OLINE or O-Coordinator to make the right moves for the rest of the team.

He's old. He's not a great recruiter. He's not a great coach. The elite teams that compete have figured out how to beat Clemson: shut down the garbage oline, make them one-dimensional.

Re: For Clemson fans claiming "the sky's not falling"....

Why in the hell can’t Dabo see he hasn’t an offensive line to compete in 3 years??? I mean he’s doubting my ability to be head coach now!

The sky is NOT falling

Sep 9, 2021, 4:00 AM

BUT we do have multiple issues on the offensive side and problem number one is the OL. I think we have lacked talent and coaching. We have some young talent now and more on the way. But we must get better soon otherwise the obvious problem will be coaching. How much longer is Dabo willing to cover for our coaching deficiencies?

There are some programs out there that always have a great oh well even when they don’t necessarily have a great team. Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, often Pittsburgh, Boston College, and others. Surely one of those OL coaches and staff would love to be at Clemson and win championships!

And we absolutely positively need to take it vantage of the transfer portal if for no other reason then to build some quality depth. Ohio State, Georgia, and LSU beat us largely thanks to transfer players!

Can we just lay-off Robbie Caldwell. He’s going to be turning 70 soon and is probably retiring this year. Dabo knows that loyalty is a 2way street. Who’s up next. Tommy Austin?

Are you saying UGAs OL played well in Saturday's game?***

Sep 9, 2021, 10:57 AM

Nope. They weren't anything special against our elite defense.....and JT Daniels is so grossly over-rated by ESPN it's sickening.

I'm saying Clemson's Oline played like worse.

UGA didn't take 7 sacks. Clemson did.
UGA had over 120 yards rushing. Clemson had 2.

Point is, our OLine is not coached well. The star rankings simply show that our recruiting efforts follow what we see on the field.

Run some metrics on UGA RBs in the NFL comared with us.

Sep 9, 2021, 10:51 AM

Then let me know if you think it's that they do such a great job of developing OLs, or if perhaps they are recruiting at a much higher level at RB.

Re: Run some metrics on UGA RBs in the NFL comared with us.

Sep 9, 2021, 11:03 AM

Sure.

UGA currently has 3x 1st-round RB's in the league.
UGA currently has 7x 1st-round Olinemen in the league.

Clemson has 2x RB's in the league: one 1st round injured, one 3rd round bench warmer
Clemson has 5x Linemen ranging from 1st to 5th round.

So yes - the fact that they have MORE players in the league, drafter MUCH higher on the board, 100% means that they do a better job of developing O-linemen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey, they also recruit better.

Sep 9, 2021, 12:16 PM

Kind of hard to rule that fact out.

...which basically coincides with my original point.

They recruit better - with no titles to their name in 40 years - with multiple coaching changes - playing in the toughest conference in the country.

....and we're 70 miles away. Beautiful campus. Stellar coaching staff. National Champions. Very little coaching turnover. Recruiting skill players like it's nothing.......but either can't recruit OLmen or can't develop them.

It's shows in the NFL recruiting numbers. High end HS athletes see that as well.

What do you mean he did nothing with Carmen?

Sep 9, 2021, 11:47 AM

Carmen was a 2nd round pick in the best football league in the world. Carmen was the best OL we've had come thru since Mitch Hyatt. Carmen was our most consistent OL. What do you mean Caldwell "did nothing with him"? How many OL from any team ever get drafted in the 1st round?

Bockhorst consistently grades out high and typically leads the line. What are you talking about he gets abused? Are you talking about his first ever start at center, or for his career?

Look, something is wrong with our OL. I personally don't think its technique though. I think it's strength and physicality. Part of that stems from a lack of practicing for the physical mindset. Something has gone astray since 2018, and I think we've moved way too much to a finesse game. We need to get back to more physical practices and work on punching the other dude in the mouth. Let's face it.. our run game is a joke against anyone with a pulse.

Re: What do you mean he did nothing with Carmen?

Sep 9, 2021, 12:42 PM

Jackson was the 7th OT taken off the boards in last years NFL Draft.

For a guy that was the number 1 player in OH when Clemson drafted him....he was drafter after OL's from:

Oregon
Northwestern
Alabama
Virginia Tech
Oklahoma State
Stanford

Bockhorst:

If time permits, go back and watch last years CU/ND game in southbend. Count how many times he's literally thrown to the ground.
Then go watch the UGA game. How many defenders run RIGHT past him. The amount of missed assignments was insane.
Same for the LSU game.
Same for the OSU semi.

Awesome.

I did the same from the upper deck of the super dome in N’orleans…..then again when we took a beat down from OSU and again last week when we could barely muster a field goal….

Awesome. It’s a message board, DA. This is where fans espouse their teams achievements…. And their abject failures.

Your feelings still hurt, sweetheart?
