How does a team look that much different one week to the next?

That's it, that is the question. Two completely different teams, and yes I know App State isn't Georgia, but that is not the difference.

They have far and away the most talented roster in the country. They have had historic recruiting classes built on top of each other for about 6 years running.

I think having a legitimate deep threat at WR completely changes an offense & conversely how a defense prepares for an offense.
That 3rd play showed App St something they had never seen on tape before causing them to change their defensive gameplan on the fly & we took advantage of it.
NC St will now gameplan for Wesco & Moore but that should make Mafah & A Williams start to grin ear to ear, especially with how well our OL has played so far!

I will buy that for a dollar. Wesco did set the tone early and the lack of a deep threat has hurt this team for several years. I think you are right that it took them by surprise because if we are all honest it took us by surprise. Cade looked confident and couldn't miss. You are also right that everyone will be scheming an answer so future success will be more difficult.

Wesco is going to be hard to plan against. With that kind of speed, you've got to keep two on him at all times. If Cade keeps making throws like that first TD, I don't know you can stop it.

Well they also have the lowest graduation rate and the most arrests… all of which is overlooked because of money in the Sec!

Defensively was about the same. First team was great both games until late against GA. Backups gave up yards & points against Appst.
Offensively, it was game plan and execution and having the proper players on the field to execute it. Agreed, talent level of the opposition was different but play calling and execution was "Air Raid" against AppSt. and "Dirt Raid" against GA. I hate to use the term "Dabo's offense" but that is exactly what we saw against GA. Run first, short passes, play shy and ignore the middle of the field. Against AppSt, they continued to throw the football down the field even after having a big lead which is unheard of for Dabo the past 3 years. Hopefully they learned that these downfield throws and attempts open up everything including the run, and we don't go back into our protective shell on offense at the first sign of stress.

I didn't think about that but I think you are right. Maybe this was more of a Garret Riley led offensive scheme? Whatever it is, it is the best Clemson has looked in 5 years or more.

I'd say that's an honest assessment. But I would temper that to an extent. Oline!!! Cade had all day to go through his progressions and quite frankly app st just doesn't have the athletes to show exotic schemes on defense... whereas uga is brilliant. Plus uga can bait you into the short stuff because of their team speed, can get to the ball quickly.

One team against the best team money can buy vs same team against sunbelt opponent??? Really… Night and day difference! It was not Clemson improving that much in 1 week that made it look so different. It was the level of the opponents. I am just glad to see that we do have the ability to make at least some plays that are not 3 & punts! Clemson looked great last night! Let’s hope that gives them the confidence to back it up the rest of the year! Go Tigers!

I understand the difference in opponent, but that is not the answer. Last year we played them all the same and we looked just like we did vs Georgia. Saying the opponent determined the outcome is pushing the easy button and does not explain that vast of a difference. So I will ask again. What was the difference?

Our OL could hold up to their DL and that gave Cade time in the pocket to feel comfortable and throw long.

That ignores our receivers actually catching everything thrown their way and...

that it confounded App's Tate from stacking the box. We dropped 28 on them before they figured it out then proceeded to play like a Trevor led team. Cade had a masterful, record breaking performance and he only played half a game.
Imo, thinking one of those factors was less important that our D-line is a bit more than shortsighted.

All during our playoff run we lost one game.

Dabo intentionally keeps the other team in the games with purpose. He manufactures adversity and stress. He will typically, substitute liberally and let the other team drive all the way to and inside the redzone then put starters back in and dare them to fail.
Folks think Dabo is foolish to blow a game but he certainly makes his point to our players. Such substitutions allows everyone viable to our victories to be pressured, by circumstances, into performance. If you saw the game you may have noticed how Cade was on the sidelines seeing replays. That helped him just as much as sitting in the film room and being coached.
During those close wins Dabo gets film to bich about to every players. Our team has the best coach in the business and has since we signed Dabo. Nothing with this man is accidental and as far as I'm concerned his only mistake was allowing DJ to play during Cade's freshman year. It only took three or four games to make me believe DJ would never change and to be honest after last year I though the same about Cade.
I was wrong on both accounts. Cade proved some QBs are worth a bad season to refine them and get the best from them. I see why Dabo kept DJ behind center and refused to give up his plan until the end of the year.
With the ACC having no division any longer it's clear that the UGA game was that one chance to humble these players, their coaches and fans. I am confident that no one else on our schedule can match what we saw yesterday and handle our team on either side of the ball. I hope we see UGA again this year.

I’d like to think that somewhere in the locker room there are clips on loop playing of the talking heads trashing Clemson for no transfers and how they aren’t good enough. And posters up in the lockers of tigernet experts trashing specific position groups

In 2022, Oregon lost 49-3 to Georgia in Week 1. Everyone was talking about how bad Bo Nix was. They ended up with a top-10 offense and Nix was a Heisman finalist the next year. All that to say don’t use a game against Georgia as a measuring stick

Fair comparison I suppose, but Oregon played every game the same way. What we saw last night was not the team we saw against Georgia. I don't care about the final score. Just look at the play calling and execution. Saying that what we saw last night was simply because of the opponent overlooks how vast the difference was and does not consider that last year no matter who we played we did not look different. So what was the difference?

ND looked pretty darn good against aTm and then laid an egg in the home opener against N. Illinois. Say what you want about the portal, but it does seem like we are seeing more parity in college football, and I think for mid-tier programs, it has helped since they have a hard time recruiting against the big programs for top HS talent.

No doubt and that certainly has to factor in. I don't know if they simplified the scheme so he had less options to cycle through or what, but he was definitely faster AND more accurate. No one in the country was throwing the ball better than Cade yesterday.

It was confidence, protection, precision, and being in synch.
But mostly confidence. I think that first long td was App St not believing we would throw it or could complete it if we did. They got caught looking to sit on an underneath ball.
