So first you mandate electric vehicles. Eventually people stary buying them. Oh no, a problem!!! If they're not fueling up with gas, then we're not getting our tax money. Solution? Oh yeah, here, install this GPS on your vehicle so we can track you.......'re mileage, yeah. This way we can tax you by the mile. Nevermind we will know your location, places you go, businesses you visit, your religion, your property locations, where you work. Oh, and maybe some day, they can use the tracking device to mail you traffic tickets for driving too fast, or skipping a red light, or rolling through a stop sign. Yeah!!!
Oregon....smh.
https://apnews.com/article/gas-tax-highway-maintenance-mileage-user-fees-15abaae7e6097946f900e87be95214e1As fuel taxes plummet, states weigh charging by the mile instead of the tank U.S. states are facing a myriad of hurdles as they experiment with programs to eventually replace the motor fuel taxes that have paid for roads for more than a century. Those taxes are generating less each year due to inflation, fuel efficiency and the rise of electric cars. One popular proposal is to charge drivers by the mile rather than the gallon. But eight years after Oregon began a voluntary pilot program, it's still having trouble getting many people to sign on. Other ideas are to tax electricity from public vehicle charging stations or tack charges onto door-to-door package deliveries. States are now weighing whether to start making the programs mandatory.

I’m thinking the same.
Both the new guy and the recently banned guy exhibit a high level of sensitivity to criticism of authoritarian type controls that are initiated by leftist government entities.
Both realize that a cogent defense of leftist authoritarianism is impossible; therefore they deploy mockery as their tactic to defend their leftist authoritarian leaders.
Quacking like a duck …

Sparsely populated counties want to join Idaho. It's not many people, but they would deserve the degradation in education, medical care, and everything else that goes with living in a poor red state.

Yes indeed.
Medical care advantages: Secession from the State of Oregon would deny the Eastern Oregonians the medical wonders of street access to fentanyl. Lucky Western Oregonians would have all the fentanyl for themselves.
Educational advantages: Math and reading proficiency test scores are declining in Blue States. Woke education initiatives are emphasizing social aspects at the expense of de emphasizing math and language skills. Western Oregon should be pleased that state funding for woke education practices will go entirely to Western Oregon’s kids. Good luck with that.
(?). Why is Western Oregon so vociferously opposed to Eastern Oregon becoming part of Idaho? Sentiments from Eastern Oregonians continue to trend towards a preference from leaving Oregon and joining Idaho. Isn’t Eastern Oregon populated with ‘deplorables’ who ‘cling to their Bibles and guns’?

Archie, if living in a red state sucks so bad please tell your blue state buddies. They must not know because they keep showing up here in droves. You can save them the trouble by warning them. You can save us the trouble of having their moron selves here also.

That data does not go to the government without a warrant

It goes to data brokers, and Google, etc. But if the government wants that data (with identifying information), they have to request it, and show probable cause. If they're tracking every vehicle to track mileage, and that's connected (obviously) to you, then yeah, that's a bad thing.

about you than this would even provide. People know that and don't care so I doubt you'll see the privacy concerns here actually affect adoption. The fact it's another tax will be a much stronger deterrant to adoption than privacy concerns, imo.

yeah, we are on the same page, I am just saying that we already done slid down that slope with cell phones and laptops. If I speed in my car, or my commute suddenly jumps to 30 miles, my insurance company does not give me that sweet discount I signed up for with their app. google maps is always tracking your location, mostly for traffic reports, telling you how long it will take to get to a destination based on said traffic, alternative routes, etc.. which certainly can be used against you with a warrant. But this data could just as well be used as an alibi if you were charged with a crime, especially if your phone also accepts biometric data to verify that it is, in fact, you in possession of the said phone, like the geniuses that took theirs into the capital building on Jan 6.
Now as far as the federal government using tracking, yeah, I see your concern, being the amount of gas you purchase should be sufficient for calculating your tax. it appears a solution in search of a problem.

All-electric vehicles are subject to an annual licensing fee of $316.40 for commercial vehicles and $210.87 for non-commercial vehicles.
Many states do this instead of tracking mileage.

Alternative is to tax everybody, whether they drive or not. The gas tax system was supposed to be fair, the people who use the highways pay for them.
