Have you come, like the doomed people of Zebolim and Zoar, tp her the woeful fate befalling our boys in that stinking pit, that city of wanton waste? Have you come to hear me tell you of the great crimson and silver flames of hellfire set to be unleased Saturday noon?
Too bad. The only doom I see is in the tear-filled eyes of unbelieving Bulldogs.
There are days, moments, instances foretold when the world changes. I think ... no, I BELIEVE ... we will see that come to pass this Saturday in Atlanta.
Why? Because I've seen it before. Not in the fevered dreams of snake venom but with my own eyes. And those Sons of Clemson with days and mileage on them have seen it as well.
Yes, I remember what happened the last time we played the Dawgs. We had a young QB who's talents didn't match our needs. We had an offensive line that, for that evening, couldn't guard a ham sandwich in a synagogue. We DID throw the game's only TD -- just to the wrong team. If that hadn't happened we might still be playing.
Saturday we go at it again. And already the prevailing mood seems to be "I hope we're respectable. "I think Clemson can cover." "I hope we don't get run out of Atlanta."
Well, screw that! I didn't spend my adult life hoping to be respectable. Tigers don't hope to cover. We're Clemson -- were better than that.
Time, family, the job the stress of daily life may have dulled the memories. Disappointment tarnishes the brilliant bursts of days when magic turns our mundane world into topsy-turvy tomorrow-be-damned joy.
As some of you know, I'm old. I've got a cancer that, barring medical miracle or the Almighty's return, will get me well before I want to be got. I'm not wasting the days I have left hoping to cover. I'm no dang Gamecock.
And that is why ... one more time ... I'm calling for Gee-Haw'd on Georgia.
I'm calling on all Tigers -- youngsters too young to fear, silverbacks too old to care. These are the moments we live for, facing down the bully, spit in the face of doom, rediscover the joy of unbridled expectations. The heart of Clemson, the unwillingness to give up is still there, waiting to be unlocked once again.
So let the Dawg fans come, like rats to the granary. Let them woof and bark, drool and slobber like a castrated Cujo. Let their fans crawl out from the hangovers and their players slink out of county lockup. There's a game, a legacy, a restoration to be wo. It's not going to be a walk in the park. But nothing worth winning ever is.
And this team deserves nothing less.
