Aggie Band 2019

Howdy Clemson Tigers...
Word has it we WILL be bringing the Aggie Band to Clemson this year.
I was hoping we would, as it's the obvious choice to bring the Aggie Band to a school with a storied tradition and fan base with which we've had such positive experiences, both last year and several years back. But you never know for sure when school athletic ticket offices and such get involved and since we don't bring the Band to every away game.
Don't leave your seats at halftime!

It will be great to have you. Have your director get you to the campus early so you can look around. And this is not a flat land university. Plan to go up and down hill a lot. Hope the weather is great and have a safe trip. GO TIGERS!!!

Oh... haha.. I'm not in the Band, just an Aggie alum looking forward to visiting Clemson as well. And for sure, we will be taking in all things Clemson in and around campus, soaking in the pageantry of college football there that weekend. Just thrilled we are bringing the Aggie Band so they can perform in front of your crowd this year.

the Aggie band is awesome! What a show! My brother in law was a nuclear engineering major (back in the 70s when they offered it as a major). He wants to see Jimbo exact some revenge. We were directly behind the corner of the end zone on the play that K’Von Wallace slapped through the end zone. He is still fuming over that play.
Should be a great game! Come tailgate with us in lot 2 behind the north stands, spaces 106/107 against a row of trees. We drive two Suburbans.

We'll try! Way too early to know what we're doing and I'll be tagging around with three other Ags. But if we're in the area of your tailgate, may just take you up on that!

That's great. The full band or just a small pep band? The only full marching visiting bands we ever get at Death Valley anymore are the schools closest to us like SCar,FSU,GT,UGA and Auburn. Seems like full marching bands don't travel anymore for long distance regular season games.

That's part of the problem. The Aggie Band does have an endowment for travel funds. But then again, to bring the full Band, the opposing school would have to allot over 400 for the full Band (including the freshmen). 275 is enough to still have a quality halftime performance for our hosts, so...

"Full" Band, which means full Band less Freshmen to save on cost. I don't know offhand how many freshmen are in the Band, but the "full travel Band" will still be around 275 people.
When travelling, my understanding it's very rare for us to bring the freshmen as well. So it will be the "full Band" that we would travel with. I think for the neutral site game in Dallas with Arkansas, they may bring the freshmen, since Band members can simply drive their own cars and many can stay with parents and friends there. But when it involves a flight, it's simply cost-prohibitive to bring 400 or more. Game Ticket + Air + Hotel... etc.
The effect though will still be awesome for fans to see. Perhaps a couple clips from when they traveled to Alabama helps get a sense for when we send our Band.
Guessing the Band will march into the stadium at Clemson. Not sure, I suppose it only happens if allowed by the host school. But it does add to the atmosphere...

C2AG93.... the terms "full" and "traveling" band are not normally used. I know what you mean, but the Aggie Band is really just a set of specialized units in the Corps that form a cohesive larger unit and are task organized for most drills. Whenever units from both major bands, Artillery and Infantry Bands, come together for a drill or parade, that organization is referred to as The Fighting' Texas Aggie Band, or the Combined Band, regardless of whether or not freshmen are included, or the entire band is not on the field.
1. It is rare for the "entire" band to come together for any event, even at Kyle Field, as it is much larger than most effective drills for a football field will accommodate, and transportation costs even to parades are significant. As the university's size has exploded, so has the size of the units that form the band. In the last few years each band added two company / battery sized units, and band units are already much larger than their Corps counterparts. In order to standardize drills and provide consistency, the number of bandsmen on the field has been capped at around 430 (436?).
When the band flies, the logistics of flight determine the number. When aircraft are chartered, the university prefers at least two aircraft, and the type of aircraft in large measure the number traveling, usually 291 is the top end, but it all depends.
The band's fish class in recent years (freshmen for all you normal college types) has averaged just north of 130. Attrition is pretty high, but lower than in "the good ol days", whenever they were...... It is not normal until later in the year to expect that the full complement of fish will be on the field for a game until late in the season.
To move the standard band contingent to the average football game by air (circa 300) is well over $500,000, (transport to air port from A&M, air travel, transport to hotel, transport to practice field, back to hotel or straight to game, transport for return trip, busses back to campus, food, and the price of tickets......yada, yada.
It is a significant logistical feat in the middle of the fish train up cycle, where the upperclassmen responsible for training fish have to be pulling double duty. And..... by taking 290 upperclassmen out of the equation to train for the drill, it puts a lot of work and planning to keep drilling the fish in general Corps stuff. If the band heads to Clemson this year it will be the earliest in a season I have heard of the band making an air movement. The only organization on campus that has that kind of juice is the Athletic Department, so if the combined band makes a showing in Death Valley, planning and funding for it will have started last year.

So pleased they will make their way to South Carolina for their first appearance in Death Valley.
This year is going to be a great year for visiting bands in Death Valley. Also with the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, I expect the Florida State Marching Chiefs and Georgia Tech Marching Yellow Jackets to bring full bands to Tiger Town this year.

Fun fact... that even many Aggies don't know... The tune to the Aggie War Hymn was adapted from a barbershop quartet song popular in the early 1900s, "Goodbye My Coney Island Baby". Of course, it sounds completely different when adapted to a military marching band and the War Hymn lyrics are sung but 90,000 Aggies at a game, much less the swaying, but the similarity is unmistakable when you listen to the barbershop quartet song.

Unsure, I believe we normally bring her to away games, but sometimes not. Love Reveille, but honestly never focused on the question of how they decide if she travels.
My GUESS is she probably doesn't travel to regular season away games involving a flight (kennel and flying may stress her out?). If they maybe have access to a private plane where she could be better cared for on the flight, maybe? Just guessing, as I know she goes to bowl games... Guess we'll have to watch the sidelines that day to know for sure!

Reveille's travel is handled by an office in the University' Student Affairs, specifically dedicated to travel for student representatives of the school, yell leaders, mascot, etc. She travels based on a set of protocols, some for safety, some because she is in fact a living animal and there are situations based on health, age, environment it is deemed she can not go. The Band's travel is handled by designated staff within the Commandant's Office, Reveille's activities are with the University, even though she lives with and is cared for by E-2 on the quad.
There are places the university will not let her travel under any circumstances, Lubbock, TX is at the top of that list, for example, after students at Texas Tech pelted her with c and d cell batteries from the stands during a game in Lubbock in the late 90's I believe. There is a picture of E-2 forming a "Square" around her, escorting her out of the stadium. E-2's protective square was pelted all the the way out of the stadium. It was an ugly scene.
Reveille is not as a general rule permitted to travel on commercial air, when she is flown, it is usually on charter air, donated or leased business jets.
Clemson is not in the wildest stretch of the imagination a place Reveille would be banned from. Its student body is legendary for civility during sporting matches, security is well run, the stadium is a first rate facility. Travel for her is not a problem, as the band will travel on chartered air, and she and the yell leaders could travel with the band.
Clemson has a vote. Usually there is quite a lot of coordination done with the office of student affairs for the school visited. LSU for example, has a number of times put restrictions on A&M side line activities that made it difficult to accommodate Reveille, some schools as a rule discourage live mascots. They do after all have to go to the bathroom, dogs have been known to bite (can you say Reveille VII?), etc.
My guess is, the band is going, Clemson is one of those bucket list designations, Jimbo really likes Jabo, Clemson fans were awesome visitors at Kyle the two times we played them there, so Reveille will most certainly go.

Since for most of A&Ms history has had the school in conferences made up of teams from Texas, with at times a combination of Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Arkansas schools, most of the schools in the East, North and West have not heard of or seen the band. Lots of arcane trivia about it, but (hate to use them as a source) Wiki has a fair write up if you get bored and want to check it out. Despite its size, it is the most traveled college band in the US most years. A&M until last year discouraged the concept of “pep” bands for football games, so large portions of the band have deployed a lot.
There is a misconception that the band travels on an endowment fund. Some trips are coordinated at the request of the Athletic department, band members must pay for trips to at least one venue a year out of pocket, called a Corps Trip (the Arkansas game now that we are in the SEC), unless direct contributions are made to the Commandants fund for for that specific trip to offset cadets cost.
In my junior year, the Arkansas State Legislature offered to pick up part of the tab for our travel, as we had announced we were not going to that game. We ended up going at the last minute, but refused their offer for funding. The Arkansas Band did not play at halftime so we could do an extended drill.
The old SWC was kind of strange that way.

There is a reason why Live PD is so popular and Richland County, SC (The home of the mighty Coots) has been a very popular location on the show! SC, and even moreso the stadium, are in the heart of tons of drugs and gang activity. But let's look past the location and the fans are the most delusional, unsportsmanlike, foul-mouthed, rude dirt-peckers, so bad that I actually know some USC grads that refuse to go to games because they are embarrassed.
Prime example: 2 yrs ago our game in Columbia was stopped 2-3 times because students and fans throwing water bottles and whatever at the Clemson players. Hunter Renfrow was hit with a Coke Can as he scored a TD and it's the only time i can remember Dabo getting a Tech Foul because he was screaming at refs telling them to do their dammm job and protect his players.
Bittomline, wise choice selecting Clemson as your first Venue in SC.

Hey ithaca, yea, for sure. I've seen Ags tear up sometimes. Mom would stand and watch intently every time I brought her to a game, it just "meant more" than entertainment to her.
Guess it's something that pulls across generations reminding us of our military roots and history. The big, brassy sound just hits a spot in the heart and can really be owned by all Americans, not just Aggies, and it seems to transcend. So, we love it when another school is willing to allot the seats for them, and honored when allowed to play in their homes. Should be a real treat!
And I recall when the Aggies played the Citadel in 2006. It was really cool to see come Citadel cadets in the ranks with the Aggie Corps for March In before the game.

Aggie Band, Class of (cough) 77. Okay, just because football news is kinda hard to find, some tid bits about one of the strangest collegiate organizations known to mankind.
1. The official name of the organizations (plural for a reason) that form the band you see on the field is: The Combined Band at Texas A&M. The name comes from the late 1930's when Texas A&M began to expand for the looming war. The campus was divided into two parts, one side was housed around Sbisa Dining Hall and the other around the newer Duncan Dining Hall. One side of campus trained predominately infantry and cavalry units, the other side artillery. Each part of campus had its own band, The Artillery and Infantry Bands. For sporting events, the two bands would come together and form The Combined Band. These two bands were intensely competitive, and as you will see in number (2), the bandsmen at A&M became legendary for their willingness to engage in fisticuffs.
2. The nickname of the Combined Band at Texas A&M is "The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band." Not Fighting, but Fightin'. This nickname comes from the culture of fisticuffs among bandsmen in its early years. The first drum major of the Aggie Band, a man named California Morris, was the first student expelled from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas...... for constant brawling. From Morris the band instilled the tradition of selecting the head drum major by holding...... a bare knuckle boxing match. The winner of the "tournament" became the head drum major.
3. The bands fought so much internally, both bands were disbanded and reformed as the Maroon and White band. That worked, for awhile. In the 1970's, the bands returned to their original designations of Artillery and Infantry. Each band is now comprised of three company or battery sized units (A, B, C companies and A, B, and C batteries). Each band has its own battalion level staff, a command structure and a drum major. The Combined Band has its own staff and command structure, with the head drum major. Total of 6 subordinate units, two major sub units with three drum majors and Combined Band staff form the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band. When members of the band are commissioned, their unit designation as they walk across the stage is always their battery or company, never "the band'.
4. The band is the only college band (or Service Band I think) that is housed in the same space (up until this year, Dorms 9 and 11 on the Quad, the band has been moved to Dorms 10 and 12 now the new band facility has been finished), has two formations a day, takes meals together, etc. Bandsmen leave the band with their class, whether they have graduated or not, as the band like the Corps is structured in a rigid class system. Basically, 4 years and you are out.
5. Many early traditions of the college come from the band or are connected to the band (not surprising, as late as the 1970's, one out of every 40 students at the college was in the band). Reveille, the school mascot was the bands' mascot for years. The Band Director hated that dog, and eventually got her moved to another uni. E-2, still the Corps mascot unit. The Yell Leaders come from a group of Aggie Band freshmen dressing up in janitor uniforms to put on skits for the dates of upper classmen.
6. For almost all of Texas A&M's existence, it was forbidden by an act of the Texas Legislature (that should tell you something right there), to confer degrees in music. So, no Aggie Bandsman (to the best of my knowledge) had a music scholarship to be in the band, certainly not up until I graduated. Pretty sure changes to that will or have happened, but not positive. When I was at A&M, there were no music courses taught at the school, save a course in music history. Our Band Commander took the course, and it is the only course he did not get an A. He missed a perfect grade point average by that B, and he graduated with a degree in nuclear engineering.
7. Texas A&M is one of the only major colleges or universities where both the alma mater (Spirit of Aggieland) and its "fight song" (Aggies claim "we do not have a fight song, we have a War Hymn) were written primarily by students or former students.
8. The most famous of Aggie Band directors was Col Dunn (the guy who hated the dog), and he tried unsuccessfully to ban the boots seniors wear. Incredibly difficult footwear to march in (one of the many reasons the Aggie Band marches at 104 beats a minute, not the 120 of the Army and Air Force Bands, and not the 90 for the Marines and Navy. Have no idea what show bands tend to go at). Basically, the band refused. Which is interesting because another Aggie tradition, those same senior boots, were first made by the first band director, Joseph Hollick, whose primary occupation was a boot maker.
9. The Aggie Band plays a distinct rendition of the national anthem, passed down from Col Dunn (the guy who hated the dog). It is still my favorite way to play the national anthem.
10. The nickname for Aggie Bandsmen is "BQ". While its official meaning (now) is Band Qualified student, in my time it was understood it meant "Band Queer", because bandsmen were famous for sticking together in a fight. This is not an insult, as many in the newer generations do not understand the humor associated with all male institutions (as the band was until 1986). Our room mates were always the same sex, if you are a man, you room mate is always referred to as "my Ol' Lady." (My second Ol' Lady lives 11 miles from me and is still my best friend in the world. His wife understands that she is his wife, but Ol' Lady is a term reserved for former bandsmen who roomed with you). Women refer to their room mates as Ol' Man.
11. The Aggie Band does not march with tuba's, as the word tuba starts with the descriptor for our most hated in state rival (now no longer play them in football), texas university, always lower case, or t.u. Our sousaphone section are called the bass section, and along with the drum section are the most independent of all groups in the band, with their own rituals and leadership structure when preparing for drills.
12. And flutes are not allowed in the band. They are the only standard band instrument that will not fit through the bands' formations.
13. The band's uniform is always whatever the uniform of the day is for the Corps of Cadets, except at halftime as the band has always refused to wear inclement weather gear (raincoats, etc.). In class A uniform, an Aggie Senior will have on almost $2,000 worth of kit (Boots $1,200 or more, blouse, jodhpurs, spurs, garrison cap, etc.....). The class A uniform is patterned after the 1931 Army uniform, commonly referred to in the Army as Service Pinks and Greens. The Army just announced that this year they are starting to transition back to Pinks and Greens.
Have a great game Tigers. Best of luck for the season.

My grandfather was at Clemson in the mid 20's and he referred to his roommate as his "ol lady". Must have been a military college thing more than a band thing

Yes, I was in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M but not in the Band. We also referred to our dorm mates as "Ol Lady". Must be a throw back to the military in general from the early 1900s. Things like that just have a way of persisting at A&M.

Maybe we should play Texas A&M for Military day every year instead of Duke. It would be a better game.

I'm down! That would be an awesome rivalry... rare to have a respectful one, as our games in around 2005/2006 and last year and this year are proving out. That would be amazing, as I know Clemson has a strong military tradition as well. I'll have chills when the Aggie Band takes the field at Clemson. Not out of undue pride in it, but as I know you guys will enjoy it. Just think if we played annually as a tribute to the military?!!? Best idea I've heard in a LONG time.

Well, I hope CLEMSON does not treat the TAMU band like Va Tech treated our band.
============ Clemson's Tiger Band is currently sitting in the very extreme corner of the upper level in Lane Stadium on Saturday night.
Tiger fans have been upset that the band was placed so far up away from the action.
The official Virginia Tech Twitter account posted their reasoning for putting the Tiger Band in the very corner of the upper level of their stadium.
"As @PeteMoris notes, that's the same location in the visiting team section where our band is situated when on road," Virginia Tech posted.

I saw the the Aggie Band at the Belk Bowl a couple of years ago and was blown away. No offense to all the other marching bands out there but nothing compares to a Military Marching Band!
Now maybe one of you Ags can explain this version of the A&M Fight Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPD2-gwsvpc

Haha!!! Aggie here and that's awesome you found that. We actually love that parody. TBH, not entirely sure the genesis of it, as it floated around bulletin boards years ago and you never know with internet legends. But from what I understand, the bovine contingent (aka "teasips" or more commonly known as Longhorns at Texas U) made it thinking that we would get upset. We've actually been rolling on the floor about it for decades!

That is a pretty standard end of season cross through. Early season drills are normally build ups to that one, like every thing in the service, standard basic moves lead to more complex. This is one of the better end of season drills I have seen. Its old, the resolution is not great, but think you will get the idea.

Let me add some commentary to highlight some of this great post. I think I too will get chills when the band enters the field based on their deep commitment to providing this nation with young men to join the fight .... whenever or wherever. Clemson has followed that same commitment. I was one of them .... USMC 1969-1989 Aggie Band, Class of (cough) 77.
Very neat!
Great way to select a head drum major .... surprised more schools don't adopt that policy.
Like this too!
Good .... develops esprit de corps!
Wish Reveille had bitten the dood ..... maybe he did .... thus the hate!
Fightin' men ort not to major in music ..... good move. I took Music Appreciation one summer and had about the same results as your BC ....... except when I graduated I am not sure the nuclear stuff, like the atom, had been discovered.
7. Texas A&M is one of the only major colleges or universities where both the alma mater (Spirit of Aggieland) and its "fight song" (Aggies claim "we do not have a fight song, we have a War Hymn) were written primarily by students or former students.
I'm not sure who wrote ours Alma Mater, but it is a good one and probably written by students who also did not major in music, since we don't offer that kind of stuff.
As a Marine, I would have to think that ole John P. Sousa had it right and bands should march at 90 BPM. I'll give you a pass on that one as I can slow your band down to 90 on my computer and it will be right.
9. The Aggie Band plays a distinct rendition of the national anthem, passed down from Col Dunn (the guy who hated the dog). It is still my favorite way to play the national anthem.
There is only one way to play the NA and I think we have it right. I'll give yours a score after I hear a version of it on Youtube.
We always used the "Ol' Lady' term when I was a Jarhead. IN Viet Nam we referred to our air mattress as our rubber B**ch ..... not to be confused with you Ol Lady.
See, you named you Tubas after the guy who had the march count right ...... JP Sousa.
12. And flutes are not allowed in the band. They are the only standard band instrument that will not fit through the bands' formations.
Don't tell me you have piccolos!
Yeah .... servicemen (and women) don't need to be walking around with umbrellas, raincoats ..... or putting their hands in their pockets!
Have a great game Tigers. Best of luck for the season.

First, Semper Fi!
I was a Marine reservist and was in PLC when at A&M, but due to the drastic downsizing going on (6 divisions to 3) and the less than 7% augmentation rate in 1975-76, decided to try my hand in the Army. Decided not to do it as a career, quit at 24 years. I know, where is the commitment......
Second, thanks for your service.
Third, John Philip Souza is still the master of the March, and his marches were at 90 beats per minute because the US Navy took its traditions from the British Navy, the Army and Air Force march at 120 because a soldier in Frederick the Great's army decided to come to the colonies and train 'Muricans how to whup up on some Brits. Aggies decided we were not Brits or Germans, so we'll do our own thing, thank you very much.
Forth, flutes did not used to be too much of a problem before 1985-86 (when women joined our ranks), as the all male bunch we were usually played brass and drums, with a sprinkling of some woodwinds, but flutes, not too much. While flutes have been banned from around 1947 or so, forcing the one or two guys who showed up every year to transition to the piccolo was not too bad. You could not hear them anyway. But a higher percentage of women play the flute, so now they infest (the piccolo's, not the women) our front ranks. And you can hear them..... still hurts my ears......
Now, about the dog.......
The reason the Band lost the mascot to the school was not that the girl was a bit of a mutt (she was), or that keeping her in the BQ Dorm was a violation of College and Corps rules, or that she would run out in front of the band at half time, barking most of the time, or even that she would always...... always stop to do her "thing" somewhere on the field. The old Colonel could deal with that. What frosted him was the cadets would place large bets amongst themselves each week as to what yard line she would leave her ...... scent. The betting was actually getting out of hand and was leading to some concern that these betting pools would end up contributing to disciplinary problems or scandals.
So, because the dog had to go, she had to go. If you get my drift.
At any rate, hats off to every body who serves. I graduated from A&M, but because was changing services, got commissioned out of another small southern school located around flood areas. Your Army ROTC guys and I probably met up at Fort Bragg during that time.
Cheers, be safe and best of luck to you and all you hold dear. You chose a mighty fine school, #### glad to have served in the same Corps with you (although I missed the SE Asian unpleasantness).
God Speed Marine.

And, I know this is way too much Aggie stuff, but since you don't have to read it if you don't want to, there are other specialty units in the Corps, and the most interesting (to my mind) is Parsons' Mounted Cavalry (or PMC). The Cav owns one of the only two working M1902 75mm field guns in the world. Its the howitzer shot at Kyle when the Aggies score.
It has one of the most interesting histories of any field artillery piece out there. As mentioned before, the campus in the 1930's and 1940's trained cadets as artillerymen. We used M1902 75mm guns to do it. Because of the vehicle shortage stateside, these guns were pulled to and from their firing points by horses, so they still had caissons.
When word came down the Japanese had surrendered, a train of guns was getting hitched to the horses to recover to the armory. The soldiers started whooping and hollering, and one crew, which did not have its gun hitched to its team, jumped on their horses and rode back in to celebrate.
They sort of forgot they left it, and from 1945 until 1974 that gun and caisson sat in that field, trees grew around it, and it was lost to history. EXCEPT, Aggies had this strange tradition of clearing about 80 acres of trees every year, stacking the wood into a big wedding cake, dousing it with 300 gallons of gasoline, putting an orange outhouse on top and lighting it. So, that gun was on the 80 acres picked for the 1974 bonfire, and some cadets found it, took it apart and brought it back to the quad in pieces.
Over a year, they cleaned it, put it back together, put about a pound and a half of black powder in a shell casing they manufactured and pulled the lanyard. It worked.
For another year they played with it on and off, and a wandering artillery officer thought it odd that a group of college students had a pet howitzer they did not have papers for. This screamed for some sort of adult supervision, so he sent in a DA Form 2765, annotated Gun, Howitzer, 75mm, Model M1902 and requested in the disposition line, "Request retention, Found on Installation."
The Army did not think it weird that an Army ROTC instructor wanted to let some students from a place nicknamed Sing Sing on the Brazos keep a fully functioning howitzer in front of their dorm, so they said, sure, why not.
Well, eventually lawyers got involved and they said this thing needs to have a home that is not in front of a dorm where students could, and did, light off over a pound of explosives when they kinda felt the need, irritating the students in the dorms next door. So, the typical Aggie solution was to give it to another group of students who could move it around so it could irritate students in dorms anywhere on campus.
So, they fixed the caisson that went with the gun, gave both to Parsons Mounted Cavalry, the only mounted cavalry unit at any college in the United States, maybe the world.
So now, PMC at Texas A&M is the only student mounted cavalry unit at any college we know of that has its own artillery section.
That's not odd is it? We don't think its odd.
