Age Test: If your record needle skips you put a what on it?

Pretty much only a certain crowd will know this!

Well, never mind, dang Google can tell you, LOL.

Did anyone else have to take this particular action back in the day?

We used this one particular Nickel.

Oh, you taped a coin on top of the needle arm?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. Usually, a dime would.......

be enough weight.

I always just adjust the tracking force, or replace the stylus. Sometimes you could clean it and make it run a little longer.

+1 for using the proper term for "the record needle"! I heard it called that just recently and was like; "what's that"? LOL!

You are the 2nd person in about a two week period to use the proper name of the device. Kudos!

Needle is what my parents called it; so I just kind of followed.

Man, was I off on this one. We used to run a wax candle

across the scratch to try and "fill" it so that it wouldn't skip. It actually worked 2 out of three times, unless it was a REALLY bad scratch. Then, you just felt like taking a beisaball bat to whoever scratched it.

In the early 70’s I had a cheapo turntable and didn’t know “the trick”. One of my favorite albums was Hendrix’ Are You Experienced. It got scratched and would skip. I don’t remember which song it was but i listened to it so many times that the skip became “normal” to me and years later when I would hear it on the radio or whatever it kind of wrenched my brain a bit. There ya go.

Go Tigers..and Happy 80th, Mick Jagger!

You should never put a coin or extra weight in a needle. It will over time ruin your needle and records. Properly adjusting the tracking and counter weigh by is what you need.

This was a trick for record players without the counterweight. Adding a small weight was the only way to adjust the tracking force.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

When I cleaned the dust off the needle

it would play Tiger Rag from the grooves in my fingerprints.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A little pressure.

2

Jul 27, 2023, 9:36 AM

Sometimes the pressure will re-cut the disk. You might lose a note or two but the repeating will end.

What we're calling a skip is when the needle jumps back a groove or two and repeats again and again. The goal is to make it play through rather than skipping backward.

You can put a weight on the arm but that will wear on all your disk. Not the solution.

BTW, if you keep your idiot brothers and sisters away from your turntable you won't suffer this fate. Needles can be damaged by any experiments involving fixing groove skipping.

On our old cheap kids record player, we left a nickel taped on top of the arm. If the record was badly scratched, we would hold a comb against the arm to encourage the needle to take the right track. And when we were really bored, we’d play a song on the wrong speed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

WE had two solutions.

1

Jul 27, 2023, 10:46 AM

1. Put a wieght on it. Howevr many coins it took to stop the skipping.

2. Adjust the tension on it, which was essentially the same thing.

Thanks everyone!

I appreciate the brief walk down memory lane! Some really good suggestions; I wish I knew then.
