Well other than the Bowden years and Jimbo's brief time FSU doesn't exactly scream blue blood. Sure, the Bowden years were great but before him they were nothing. Jimbo did good, at least while he had JWinston, but he was on his way out before he took the A&M job.

Exactly, FS was not Blue Blood even with Bowden.
He was a coach in a million who ?????

Lighting struck when he went to FS (like when Dabo came to Clemson, Beamer to Vt).

However, Clemson did have a National Championship and some great teams well before CDS arrived.

He hit the ground running after leaving WVU for Tallahassee. But he had to go on the road and beat tougher Skewls to get respect with the polls, and did just that. I think the game against Clemson with jerry Butler kind of solidified them on the map. But he upset a lot good programs to gain national respect, and that is what makes him one of the best. He built that program from nothing into something and kept it there. After starting 5-6, his worst year was 8 wins over 29 seasons.
