grocery stores were Winn-Dixie and A&P. Both are now gone/about to go because of poor management - no excuses.

Our Winn Dixie was well managed. Ingles came in and predatory priced them and Bilo out of business. When Ingles was last store in town, prices soared.

Hopefully Aldi will pick up Chek Sodas in all their stores. Bi-Lo did when they merged with Winn Dixie. I believe that was a Winn Dixie owned brand along with Prestige Ice Cream (which Bi-Lo also started carrying). The Chek Sodas are really good for half the price.

Here is a bit of South Carolina trivia for you - where was Winn Dixie Store #1 located?? The chain was a combination, or amalgamation of Dixie Home Stores and the Winn Supermarket Chain, and the store which bore the placard as Store #1 was in the West End shopping area of Ware Shoals. It was NOT the first Winn Dixie store, but it was the one which bore that corporate label, of store #1, following the merger. It was previously a Dixie Home Store. Of course, that is not surprising when you consider that Ware Shoals is the center of the known universe!! s'right!! When you look at a map of the entire universe, you will note that the axis runs right through the middle of Ware Shoals, very near the 5-way traffic signal!! Hence, no surprise at the number of illustrious events and luminaries to hail from Ware Shoals, including Winn Dixie Store #1 !!! It was not just Jerry Butler!! R/TLM

The Winn Dixie must have been before my time. I grew up in Ware Shoals in the 60’s and 70’s. I remember Piggly Wiggly and Bowie’s but not Winn Dixie. Where was it located? Was it the building where Piggly Wiggly started and then later became West End Drugs?

It is difficult now to remember all of the great stores in Ware Shoals, including The Company Store, Gallant-Belk, Winn Dixie, etc. I grew up in Ware Shoals about a decade before you - if you recall Martins Store on Indian Mound Road, I lived in the white house beside the store, which was run by my family from 1837 until Daddy turned 90 years old in 1997. I do not believe that the building housing Dixie Home Store #1, and then W-D #1 is still there - it was either the corner building or next to the corner building in the range of buildings housing the original Piggly Wiggly, Gallant Belk, etc. I]THINK that the West End Drug Store started out as Mr. Charles Gasque's auto parts store, and the building right beside it, which later housed The Observer, was the Western Auto store operated by Mr. Knight, and the clothing store run by Mr. Roy Cooper was in that range of buildings, as well. It's hard now to remember how vibrant the Ware Shoals economy was when Riegel employed 4000 folks!! R/TLM

Had no idea they had a Belk in Ware shoals way back then. I remember when I visited relatives in the 70's their was a dime store (today's version of a dollar store) next to Piggly Wiggly where you could buy all kinds of cheap stuff when all that stuff was made in Japan. I think it was called Richey's Dime store or Rich's. (I can't remember which).

In 2016, we had our 40th class reunion in that very same house that you lived in. Wow, what a small world. I still live in the area. I remember Gasque’s and Western Auto very well. Used to do a lot of window shopping as a kid…lol.
When I was growing up, Belks was in the building to the right of the current Piggly Wiggly. To the right of the Belks store was West End Drugs. Then to the right of West End Drugs was Gasque’s and then Western Auto. I can still see those stores like it was yesterday. Strange that I do not remember what was beyond those stores onto the corner. I do remember the Caper House being built on the corner while I was in High School.
Thanks for the memories!

Remember the old Dixie Home store in Bamberg back in the fifties. Winn Dixie had some of the best aged rib eye steaks you could want. I still miss Bi Lo.

Like other posters, thought they closed all of them years ago. Anyone know if these were part of the original company. A friend's Dad worked at their warehouse on Wade Hampton during the 60s and got to see inside one time. Our first house was behind the store at the intersection of Edwards Mill Rd and Wade Hampton, 1977 to 1983.

Been gone from WNC for 4 or so years. They had just built a state-of-art store in Lenoir and closed it 3 weeks later when the mass exodus hit.

In the 60’s my mom would bring home oatmeal raisin cookies from the Winn Dixie store bakery. Life was good!
Pretty soon, everything from my past will be nothing and/or gone….

The recent history of Winn Dixie is that they are under the corporate name Southeastern Grocers which is the company Bi-Lo became when they merged with Winn Dixie and moved their HQ from Mauldin to Jacksonville a few years ago. Southeastern probably had both chains up for sale for some time now as Bi-Lo stores mostly sold to Food Lion a couple of years back and now Winn Dixie is going to Aldi.

As I remember BI Lo was in receivership when they merged with SE Grocers who was also struggling to stay afloat. They sold off all the BI LO assets lock stock and barrel trying to survive.
Obviously that did not work. I do not see how they made it this long due to Publix's foot print in Florida.

You must not go to Florida much. They had close to 300 stores left in Florida and a handful in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Winn Dixie has tons of stores in Florida. 82 in the Tampa Bay market for example. There is a very nice WD not far from my house in Seminole, FL that I occasionally shop. There is an Aldi already not far down Seminole Blvd. from this WD. They intend to continue many of the current WD and also convert some to Aldi stores.

Shopped at Winn Dixie and Piggly Wiggly while in Alabama and Florida on beach vacation. Agree with poor management and lack of being able to renovate their stores. Many were old and dirty.
Back when I was younger, I was a route salesman with Krispy Kreme out of Greenville. I had 6 Winn Dixie stores on my routes and all of them cost me money. Best one was in Clemson, but Super Bi-Lo ate its lunch. Good memories though

I worked there years ago and it sounded like they were just going to keep stores in Florida their home base. Did not realize they had stores in these other states mentioned.
