Bathroom is done for the most part. Dude finished putting in all of the faucets last night.
Only thing left is to install the egress window, put up the vanity mirror, and do the trim and we are officially done.

That should have been in the rough in stage. This is weird. Maybe i dont know what you did. I thought you were adding a bathroom. Maybe it was a remodel.

Apparently you have to have an egress window in bedrooms now-a-days

and that wasn't caught until after all of the sheathing and siding was put up by our lovely county inspectors.

There job isn't to tell you the building codes, or even the county codes.

That's kinda like me saying teh IRS should be telling me how much I should withhold from my check for taxes. They don't really care how much I withhold...as long as my taxes are paid on time.

that's kind of what they do.
In your analogy it would be like the IRS not checking to see if you've paid your taxes.

Sometimes it takes a few years for the IRS to figure it out.

Did you know that 5 American presidents have tried to get the gubmint to provide US citizens a free method of tax preparation? And guess who made sure that didn't happen?
Turbotax.
Interesting video I saw the other day about this.

They made them quite advertising how "free" the filing was. But I think they still do it, because the tax prep is free. So..does it matter?

through all this tax prep nonsense? The gubmint literally knows where, and how much every dime I make and spend. They know how much I'm going to owe them before I do.
But every years its this big game:
"So...how much do you think you'll owe us THIS year? $5,000? hahahaha oh no. Now here's a new bill with a late fee and a fine for the other $5,000 you really owe. That is, until we go back 5 years from now and say you owe us another $753 for something you no longer have records of. Oh, and they'll be a fine for that, too."
"Can you extend filing? Sure you can! But that doesn't mean you don't have to pay us EVERYTHING you will owe, that you may not even know about yet. And oh yeah, we'll fine you for not paying that part you didn't know about, too."

This is why I don't like the idea of the fair tax, or any other consumption tax

as an income tax replacement. Taxpayers should always know how much they have paid, or have to pay, at any given time. No more of this guessing game nonsense. Oh you have some new 1099 income? Great. You owe X% on it at the end of the year.

I'm sure they'll let you know if the egress window isn't big enough.

They aren't going to check that all your electrical outlets have a ground attached to them until you are done.
"What..my houses needs doors? and a roof?? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?"

It's their job to enforce code...

Whenever they want and however they feel like. You could get to final inspection for your CO, and they might want you do redo your panel. TFB.
And if they miss something that isn't to code a year from now and come back to make you change it, there's nothing you can do.
The burden of meeting code is on the person who pulled the permit and the person who stamped the drawings (if there were any).

So... the window was framed in the 60s?
Feb 13, 2024, 11:11 AM
[ in reply to The house was built in the 60s. And I didn't know and the guys who ] |

I think it would be grandfathered in.
If this is an addition... you and your builder are idiots. Like someone said before... the egress n bedrooms has been like that since the 80s... i mean you had 40 years to figure this out.
