The first idea isn't as bad. You just play the Rivalry game before Thanksgiving instead of after. The other idea is just asinine.

These in-state rivalry games are becoming insignificant. I mean realistically, The Tigers need to make the playoffs. Win tbe conference and move on. Other than a couple of times every decade, we get nothing from playing the coots. I'd rather play a mini round robin for a playoff spot.

It's not an either or. If you move that conference game to the last weekend of the season, you're still gonna be missing another game somewhere. You would either have to play South Carolina or go play somebody else.

He is selling the wrong goods here. Should be a 'no confidence' vote after this crazy proposal gets tossed out there when they all meet up soon. Phillips is out of his league here.

Wild Blu, I would never give Phillips credit for coming up with an idea that would benefit the ACC .
I DON'T know and could be wrong, but I can see no one proposing this idea if it was not already shopped to Phillips by ESPSUX who has offered to pay more money in tv broadcast of this 4 game conference playoff championship series. There would be no reason or benefit to any acc team to propose such a change unless it meant more revenue for the conference or certain teams.
ESPSUX wants to control the ACC schedule by game time start, day game is played, and who plays who. ESPSUX IS looking for a big match up for Black Friday. The day following Thanksgiving. They tried to get Clemson to reschedule the game with the Coots last year from Sat. To Black Friday. Clemson refused.
I could be 100% wrong but I am speculating that this 4 game ACC conference championship series would have the first semi acccg game played on Black Friday and the second semi acccg game on Sat. The ACCCG would then be played in Charlotte on it's regular schedule. The semi games could be played on highest seeded home field.
I think this is what is going to happen. ESPSUX in my opinion will pay more for this and may pick the Semi Sat game as the Game Day broadcast. The black Friday game could be a 3pm game or Friday night prime time night game.

If the best that Phillips was able to come up with ESPN is this gimmicky farce then he for sure doesn't belong here.

😉 Phillips got this. He's going to accomplish greatness and the other conferences will adopt it... but the acc will be the first.

I don't think this is an original Phillips idea. I don't know but this may have been presented to Phillips by ESPSUX.

I'd agree if esecpn would throw another 20M to each conference school.

That’s awful changes. No need to change anything. ACC will only get one team in most years.

Even the current setup is dumb. In a conference or division you need every team to play every team and at least 8-9 games to see if a team is indeed worthy. With the current setup there is no way to insure year to year equity. Too many teams or not enough. Take your pick. 2 divisions with 9 teams then the CG. But you can’t rotate teams on the schedule because you can’t manage the equity year to year. In short the conferences are too big. Need max of 10 teams and then maybe you don’t even need a CG.

In this "final four scenario," you could split up into 4 division winners, and have the division winners matched up in the semifinal games.

I agree with you on this. 2 divisions , top teams out of each division play for the conference championship. I also agree that each team in the conference needs to play each other. This however, doesn’t allow for out of conference games for national exposure or playing lower level instate schools. The two ideas floated by this guy is out of touch in my humble opinion.

Honestly, I like the idea of a 4-team conference playoff. Though, I'd prefer the ACC to create 4 pods for teams based on geography - I proposed a similar idea a few weeks ago: https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/ive-got-a-cool-idea-conference-playoffs-36161699#36161699
ACC shores up the West Coast with two more teams to get to 20. Split into 4 pods of 5 teams by geography.
North - BC - Cuse - Pitt - Virginia - VT
Appalachian - UNC - NCST - Duke - Wake Forest - Louisville
South - Clemson - FSU - GT - Miami - SMU
West - Boise State (New) - Cal - Oregon State (New) - Stanford - Washington State (New)
Notes: - 8 Conference games with a 9th game being the conference championship game. - Pods play each other (5 games). - Pods play 2 other conference pod teams alternating. Ideally you'd be able to arrange this year-to-year with home + home games so you'd have the option to pair the best teams against each other from each pod or create more exciting conference games.
TWIST - Teams won't know the final conference game until after the 7th game is played and here is how that'd work with a conference playoff.
- Top 4 pod teams play each other based on seeding (highest ranked vs lowest ranked). Higher seeds have game at home. Championship game at neutral site if preferred (ATL, Charlotte, Orlando, Las Vegas, etc.) though I wouldn't mind making these home games for the higher ranked seed.
- Remaining teams play last game against conference foes. This is where it can get interesting because you could have the higher seeds play each other from other pods to bolster someone's shot at an at-large bid if they didn't qualify for the conference playoff.
ACC could generate interest by having something like above that is different and interesting. You cover conference games coast to coast similar to B1G and that could increase revenue opportunities with the first conference championship playoff.
TLDR: - First Conference Championship Playoff. - Coast to Coast teams and pods based on geography. - End of the season twist that would create matchup interest.

The ACC sure has a knack for finding terrible leaders. This seems like a case of changing for the sake of changing
And the fact that they’re taking suggestions from SMU who has 1 year under their belt and apparent sour grapes for failing to win the conference after a merry-go-round slate this year says a lot. Buncha chumps

Both ideas suck. The 2 and 3 play in the ACC championship game for what? A high five or a pat on the back. While the regular season champ that could’ve won due to a tie breaker sits at home.
And then the 4 team playoff scenario. Does the entire ACC not schedule games the last week of the season in hopes you’re one of the 4 that gets to play. Not only that you kill your rivalry games.
Both are terrible ideas.

Yes, the entire ACC simply would not schedule A game on the last week of the regular season. It wouldn't really kill your game to be honest with you. Clemson and Carolina haven't always played on the last game of the season.

They're already planning a 14 team playoff...

Where SEC and Big are guaranteed 4 each, acc and big12 2 each with 1 non power 4 (if meet certain ranking or record ...tbd) and 1 atlarge. Only Top 2 get first round bye. Top 2 from sec and big already in. 3-6 play for 3rd and 4th playoff spots. (3 vs 6, 4 vs 5) ACC is trying to get a jump on the revenue for extra games for championship and the 2 teams for playoff.

This is so dumb. If the regular season Champ gets a bye why even have a championship game. Go back to the days that the regular season champ is conference champion.
The 4 teams play in is dumb as well. Just keep it the way it is or go with no ACCCG.

Award it to the regular season champ. It avoids an extra loss for the #2 team.
