Let the hate, or jockeying for draft position, begin. Clemson enters the 2018 season with the best defensive line in college football. It’s not close if you ask me. I’ve seen a lot of football, I’ve watched a lot of games, and I can tell you without any doubt or hesitation that Clemson’s group is superior to anyone else in the nation. As a fan I appreciate the extra motivation that guys like that give our team. We have the best DL in CFB and it’s not even close. I’m glad I’m not an opposing QB.

As Twain said, the NFL scout has removed all doubts he's a fool. Maybe a IPTAY member slipped him a century to write his opinion. To top it off, he says this before the season starts after last season's team did extraordinarily well. Guess that's the only paying job he can keep.

I love us. I root for us. I like our players. But laurels wilt when sat upon.
The D-Line we have all praised and loved has helped us win some glory in the past. But they do need to play dominating ball, destroying the line of scrimmage on every play of every game to be who we think they can be. I think the guys we love so much all got NFL round 2 or lower grades across the board. Bradley Chubb was the impressive D-lineman in the ACC last year, not our guys. It's fun to see Wilkins playing safety but I would much rather him get a nasty streak, defeat the opponent on the line of scrimmage every game and earn a first round NFL grade. He hasn't done that consistently. We all want to remember a terror on the line of scrimmage, not a really nice guy who can do a split after we won it all way back when. I'd rather Wilkins concentrate on his position than running out to celebrate TDs by the offense in the endzone. I love him but in 4 months he needs to play like the best D-Lineman in the country every game.
I hope Dexter Lawrence recovers from the toe injury that has limited his effectiveness and his durability for a year now. Coming back is hard to do. He came to Clemson with great credentials. Dex needs to play as many snaps as possible with a high motor in 2018 to grab first team All American honors and a top 5 draft position based on being an unstoppable force.
I could go on trying to illustrate that we have a ways to go to be who most of us think we can be.
On the other side of the ball, Wide Receiver U has more stars that TD catches by what we think can be a great group of receivers. I know what we think, but we must regain the sort of deep offensive threat we had 2 years ago. We did not have it last year and it was not all Kelly Bryant's fault. The guys we have must play better than the two great Clemson men who got drafted late by the NFL just this week. We all think we can and we say we can and we praise highly guys who have yet to produce at the level that is expected. There is no Nuk or Sammy wearing orange just yet. Somebody who wants to make us forget those guys just a little bit should do it in 2018. 50-50 balls gotta be 90-10. They were not last year.
I have seen nearly all the games we've played for a great many years. I know we have been special. But none of that will win what we hope to win in 2018. And a whole lot of teams are waiting to pounce on any and every weakness.

If you know of a team with 4 better defensive linemen, name them. I don't get wrapped around one person or even 2. It's a team game. The errant writer makes a claim our '18 DL is overrated. I think his opinion is misguided, shortsighted, or likely biased as are most analysts. The point is our starting point with our front 4 this year IS better than anyone, imo. What we do with it this season time will tell, but I'll bet our DL and team is hungry. And smooth talking analysts with nothing but opinion eat crow.

We all hope the DL is everything it's built up to be. We've typically seen them dominate (AUB/SC/etc). We've seen them take some plays off and not dominate far lesser competition (PITT/SYR).
We were all certain from 2008-10 that Da'Quan Bowers was the best DL in America. Maybe the best ever. He was rated the #1 high school senior. He was mentioned at the same level as Reggie White and Bruce Smith. He was considered at the top of his class along with Andrew Luck, Patrick Peterson, Nick Fairley and Marcel Dareus. He was awarded the Bronco Nagurski Trophy and was named ACC Defensive POY. Then he was average at the NFL Combine and was selected #51. He went on to a very average NFL career and a season in the CFL. Still hard to decipher what happened ... nagging injuries and Daquan seemed to love music more than football. Nothing wrong with that. But there are no guarantees even the most talented can stay injury-free and maintain their drive through the college years. Like the rest of you, I hope this NFL scout is ignorant and very wrong in his assessment of the currently great D-line. But I do not take any players future for granted. Bowers was considered ahead of all our current guys. So I am looking forward to seeing them own it in the 2018 season by destroying all opponents. These guys came back for a reason. Showtime starts in 4 months.
