Three zones and none can keep the temps below 76…come on September.

We had a storm that cooled things off a bit. The AC finally caught up and has not been running for several hours.

Could be but works great until temps hit 90-92. House gets no shade and wife always wanting to keep shades open all day probably doesn’t help…

I had to replace my unit about five years ago. It had the same problem as yours.

I purposely went oversized with the new unit. (3.5 vs 2.5 tons). Best move I ever made. I can almost grow icicles inside now if I want, even on the hottest days.
And, my overall power bill at the time did NOT go up, as the new unit ran less.

Make sure the units aren't icing up.

Have had that issue before but everything seems to be operating fine…no ice inside or out…new filters…unit is only five years old. As 76 said…probably could have just used another 1/2 ton but when designed the HVAC guy was afraid a larger unit wouldn’t run enough to keep inside humidity in check. Aside from 2-3 weeks during the hottest part of the summer it does fine…just hotter than normal right now.

Shades open to the sun can make a 10-15 degree difference depending on the size (number of windows) of the house.

I have read several times lately that all we can expect of the AC is to keep the house 20 degrees cooler than the outside temp. I'm guessing this is one of those 21st century "advancements" that *may* be related to more energy efficient appliances.
My grandma used to keep her place cool enough that it could have snowed in there, and that was in Columbia - which she described as the only place on God's green earth that was hotter than Hades.

Your grandma was a smart and wise woman on her description of Cootlumbia.

We didn't have AC until I got to high school. Looking back, I wonder how we made it before that.

Same here. We had no AC in elementary school at all. Had AC in middle school (new school), but none again in high school (except 1 wing that I had very few classes in). Humans adapt to their environment better than any living creature.

Unfortunately, AC can only drop interior temps about 18 degrees below external temps. For whatever reason, they aren't designed to do better than that

If you have return air ducts in rooms with doors, keep them shut. Especially if its an upper floor. Those return air will help draw that hot air from the first floor. Instead you want to cool each room and return that chilled air to the AC coils. Also, check the air flow at your vents. If the refrigerant is getting low then icing of the coils could be a problem. If so, shut off AC but keep the blower running to melt the icing, then try AC again. You might need to pamper the system during these super hot days. Definitely close shades/drapes to keep the sun out.

Air output at the vents should be well below 60 degs for a healthy AC system. Likely inadequate home insulation is a culprit. In Michigan we typically have the furnace in the basement or crawl space. I suppose it doesn’t help when the furnace is in the supper hot attic.
