Every day that goes by, I feel better about dropping my season tickets and IPTAY membership two years ago. There is a way out of this vortex of garbage. It is for colleges and universities to reinstate eligibility requirements based on academic progress. Of course there is no interest in doing anything so regressive as that.
There are so many things screwed up in the current environment. One of them is that the value of the school itself is just being handed over to the players. Here is a thought experiment. Take any team in the country - from Ohio State to Valdosta State - and have all its current players leave to start an independent team. The new team can't use the school's name, image, or likeness at all. What kind of crowds and tv audiences do you think they could draw? Compare that to the school from which they came competing with a whole bunch of new players no one knows. See which one the public cares about the most.
The schools are making the players. The players aren't making the schools. Still, the schools appear to be content bleeding out all the latent interest fans/alumni have for the schools in the service of short-term player purchasing. It won't be many years until they are just hosting glorified AAU events with all its associated sleaze.
Anybody ready to tailgate to see the Clemson-Central Raptors take on the Metro Columbia Scalawags just after Thanksgiving? Even if they have supposed 5-star players as rated by Jim the Savant from Toledo?? Is that appealing to you? You can have my seats. Well, you could if I still had them..
Alumni,boosters,fans in general and state taxes built all of the infrastructure and brand over many decades...yet that has somehow been reduced to being insignificant. We are to believe that ONLY the abilities of the players create the value. As further proof that the original writer has a point...I give you all of the professional start up leagues that have tried to compete with the NFL...NOBODY CAN NAME 10 PLAYERS IN THOSE LEAGUES WITHOUT GOOGLING IT.

I am with you on the point of academic eligibility. When regular students transfer from one college to another, their transcripts are gone over with a fine tooth comb. I can’t imagine that these students/ athletes that transfer 3,4,5 times are possibly going through this kind of process.

Little secret about these schools who have these more-than-once transfers meeting 40% of degree required going into their 5th semester - general studies. All credits earned go towards degree.
Clemson does not do it? Used to be our major with most electives? Econ. Yikes!

That is a great thought there OLCOACH54. Remember when we were in school, you would have friends who had transferred and the common comments was that they had to go an extra semester or 2 because some of their credits did not transfer over. Just think of these kids who transfer 4 times and the courses they lose.......if that is even important to them any longer??

Perfectly stated. I'm proud of the way Coach Swinney has made academics a priority but the nonsense of the last 5 years has made me less of a fan of college football. I will always support Clemson but I don't follow it the way I use too.

I VERY seldom watch a CFB game from start to finish unless I have a dog in the fight. These are things that have got me to this point:
Players transferring multiple times at will
Announcers who feel they must give a lineage of each school a player has previously attended
Players committing to a school and then backing out because they got a better financial offer
Coaching staffs that continue to poach players from other teams through “illegal contact”
Pinheaded pundits who continually tell me that CFB will only get better because of the changes that are occurring
My opinion of course!

Since it makes the needed $ as well as gridiron fame which for the top schools increases the desire for students to enroll at that winning school due to its successful sports teams (aka Football).
It’s well know that in the 1890’s football teams were primarily students who played for a coach, usually a professor, and they were called FB CLUBS..
But each successive & successful year these Clubs became a rage and the college/universities saw $ and fame..
to the point in Jan 2025 where OHst basically increased its changes to win (aka bought the Natty trophy) due to ten’s of millions worth of players & coaches..
And where other schools/teams, like Clemson Univ & Clemson, are behind the 8 Ball by having $10 to $50 MiLLION less income a year to compete against a select group of 5-10 University-driven Teams.
Saying..The Athletic Dept is the tail wagging the head of the University Administration and Board of Directors..and they all are happy about it as are the sports fans (but are all the graduate alumni who treasure their school a bit differently due to 4-7 years of acquiring a degree).
But, sadly the Pandora’s Box (aka Greed, Fame & $) has been opened all the way and no body wants to go back to where schools like Elon or PC are and not even to a manageable scenario of the ball being played at Davidson, Furman or you name them.

correct on academics but it is a total way to cheat like UNC did and I'm sure many others. If it could abd would be enforced it would be a good thing

Unfortunately, the colleges are making a boatload of money as well and it’s hard to imagine that they are willing to turn back now.

Well lets just throw a random number out there like $20m. Who the heck came up with that number? Let's just give people part of $20m because that sounds fair. Nothing about the current NIL makes sense except letting some players make some money but the amounts and Portal is a not helping youth get educated, learn responsibilities and at this point making mockery of what college stands for. Now players with zero academic credentials get passed through HS and College and it cheapens a degree.

Spud, this began a long time ago. Remember IPTAY use to stand for I Pay Ten A Year. Those days are long gone. I do not have blank you money, neither am I living under a bridge. I finally reached the saturation point when IPTAY told me I was no longer rich enough to park on Fike Field for less than one week out of fifty two. I was told that the seats I had used for over thirty years were needed for someone else who was more deserving than me. IPTAY told me they still wanted my money but that I would have to park in Toccoa Ga, and sit above the clouds. So I told IPTAY it was nice knowing you.
It was hard the first couple of years, but time heals and it is much nicer to sit in my easy chair on Saturday now.

I've never been much of a pro sports enthusiast , and now with NIL $, transfer portal, the way it has gotten in college sports , I step further away each year. Nice to read something as refreshing as this article... it was on point!

....the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the universities. Presidents, Board of Trustees, governors of the state, whomever.
The people in charge of making decisions about the role of college athletics decided that making money was FAR more important than academics. They decided that academics were somewhere between an incidental to a hindrance to their goal which was to make money for the instution.
Now, they are reaping what they eagerly sewed.

+1 Very well said, Spud! I believe the system we now have will self destruct in short order, unless significant changes get made very soon. There is such a thing as killing the goose that laid the golden egg. I think the college football goose is a very sick bird.

Agreed! The whole deal stinks! Remember all the discussions we all had back when this Pandora’s box of paying the players was first implemented. I knew it would not end well but had no idea it would have gotten this way so quick.
Screw OSU and there 20 million dollar team. Sad part is there are not but a small number of teams that can compete with those funds.

It’s not the players or the schools that make the game.
It’s the fans. Need proof? Look at any collegiate sport without fans. What is it except a needless competition that can be axed at a moment’s notice.

it is the awareness that academics are minimized in big time college sports.
Of course, this isn’t new. Big time programs (including ours) have been making a farce of the academic side of things for generations now. Sure, players have to be accepted to school, go to class, etc., but most players wouldn’t get accepted to their respective college if they were held to the same standard as the general student body.
I applaud Dabo for emphasizing education within the current model, but it’s still a joke when the admission standards are lowered so much, and players are allowed to major in “athlete friendly” majors while having their own study halls and dedicated tutors and copies of old tests and special testing accommodations to make it happen.
As I’ve said before, I just wish schools would stop acting like academics matter. They don’t, aside from making sure players stay eligible to play.
Hold these athletes accountable by making them have comparable high school GPAs and SATs to the general student body. Make them gain acceptance on the basis of academics before they can be offered a scholarship. THEN we can talk about NIL and revenue sharing.

It is the same valid economic argument Milton Friedman makes about pencil manufacturing.
Does the pencil only exist because your were hired to make it. Or does it exist because of the people that took the risk to invest their capital, time, intelligence, and reputation to create the pencil factory at wich you now work? Hundreds of people have worked countless hours over a hundred years to make college football what it is.
Simply said, college football only exists because of colleges not players. There would be no name recognition, no image to project, and no likeness to license without the college and its century of work to build the program. Currently this is way out of balance.

We made the mistake of once being blessed enough to make sizable contributions to Clemson Athletics. Then when we retired, things changed for us and for Clemson. We, too, cancelled our 4 season tickets and dropped our IPTAY to the lowest level a few years ago. We got weary of the constant requests for more and more money and our parking being moved farther and farther out every year. It wasn't just Athletics either, as we were being constantly bombarded by the Alumni Association, et.al. wanting more and more. We finally just said "Enough" and moved on with our lives. Sadly. I miss the game day tailgates and the atmosphere, but the "money grubbing" just became too much to be overcome.
