On a scale of 1-10, how important is this game?

Aug 24, 2013, 7:55 AM

Realizing that this game really means absolutely nothing in terms of winning the ACC, beating your rival, or getting to a BCS game - what do you think?

I see it as probably 8-9 due to:
1- comparison to the SEC and their prowess (we might be the ONLY ACC team to beat a SEC team that day, or all year)
2- this game can help recruiting with a win
3- CLEMSON would probably remain in the Top Ten for most of the season
4- National recognition for our players that are Heisman contenders

I could go on and on, but I see it as more than just another OOC game that doesn't affect our entire season. Losing this game can have serious repercussions for the remaining games. I see this game as a MUST win for CLEMSON, but not really all that important for UGA. They should be more concerned with week 2 vs. USUC.

So - UGA should just mail this one in. :) okay - problem solved.

A 1 loss Clemson team does not make the BCS, this is a 10

Aug 24, 2013, 7:58 AM

On top of that, it sets the tone for the rest of the season.

As hyped up as this year is, if we lose the first game I am going to be devastated. Absolutely mortified.

The only thing that could be worse this season would be our only loss of the season being to the coots. That is something they would NEVER let us live down for the rest of our lives.

One other thing could be worse...Clemson and South Carolina both being undefeated heading into the big game in Colombia...being on Gameday, and getting the crap kicked out of us by the Coots and them going on to play and win the national title against Slowhio State.

Scary thinking about going into the coot game 11-0 and leaving with a loss, isn't it? It almost happened in 1987 and 2012. NC State stunned us 1987 and FSU came from behind to defeat us last season. Looking back now is it better that we lost those games instead of having the coots ruin a perfect season?

This game is a 10

Aug 24, 2013, 8:13 AM

It's not a conference game, but it is important on a national level. If we have any aspirations of a national title, we have to go undefeated at bare minimum. Losing this game would obviously put the kibosh on that.

It's also a rivalry and a pretty intense one at that. It's been lessened over the years due to both teams not playing each other, but their are still some old school die hards that are gonna want this one.

Also, it's a matter of national respect. Both for Clemson and for the ACC. If we can beat down another SEC team, that will go a long way towards building credibility for both.

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, this game could potentionally derail the entire season. I know the playes/coaches are saying that this is just another game but it's easy to say that. It's hard to convince yourself of that. These young guys are probably believing some of their own hype. A seriously unreasonable amount of expectations have been heaped upon this years team. A defeat in this game could cause all of that to crumble and the team may have a difficult time picking itself up again, similar to the Alabama game in 2008.

his game is a 10, however if we lose exciting close one, win

out and look really good beating Usuck at end of season, I think we can go to BCS bowl including possibly the Rose!

Of course, it's a 10, because it's our opener and important

Aug 24, 2013, 8:28 AM

for building momentum for the rest of the season. That being said, there have been a lot of other 10's over the years...some we've won, and some we haven't. I have survived them all...and so has Clemson.

Let's just say for this particular 10, confidence is high...and I am "expecting" a decisive, great victory for Clemson.

Aug 24, 2013, 8:39 AM

It's an 11.

I honestly don't think Auburn would have sucked as bad last year if we had not have crushed their expectations on the first game.

Yes - the Tigers would pick back up and do well, but do well against unrecognized and unrespected ACC teams. If we can pull this game out - that would mean we would have a 2-1 record against SEC powerhouses - which makes the SESPN love fest null and void.

We need this - not just for the Tigers, but for ACC relevance and as long as we continue to schedule games against SEC teams and play them in bowls, being in the ACC is the perfect position to be in to make a run for the NC.

Clemson 45 - Georgia 21

Aug 24, 2013, 9:27 AM

has it altered the world in any significant way? Has it changed your love for Clemson or made your diploma any more or less valuable?

For me it hasn't.

It's just another game. We'll play next week, and next year, no matter what happens.

It's a 12. Nothing less than an on-the-field win will

Aug 24, 2013, 11:10 AM

suffice. No moral victory to be gained by losing a close one here. It's a legitimate top 10 match-up and as an opening week game the eyes and ears of all of college football nation are squarely tuned in.

Can we handle the hype? Can we handle the immense pressure buildup over the months leading up to it? Are we truly ready for prime time? A W on the scoreboard tells the world "yes." An "L" says "come back in a few years when you've grown up some more."

This may not sound fair, but it's the reality we live in.

Go Tigers!

Re: On a scale of 1-10, how important is this game?

Aug 24, 2013, 11:58 AM

Anyone saying it isn't huge over a 10.11.12 is crazy. Think about it, finally Clemson has 3 top 15 teams on the schedule and an opportunity to hit the national champ game with wins across the board. That hasn't set up for Clemson since 1980

Like it or not with the hype, with the coaching, with the recruiting, with the players comes reality which is expectations.

Lose and everyone says it is just another ACC Clemson team with high expectations but no heart and no toughness no ability to win the big one no ability to play on the big stage with the big boys

Win and nobody will remember the Orange Bowl because Clemson will win the national Champ. there is no team in the country who can beat Clemson id they are able to run UGA Fla St and USC in the same season

Big season big numbers even bigger hype Clemson wins it all and Morris sails into the sunset with Texas not passing up the chance to grab him and Dabo drives on with the hardware

It's really important but we could lose and survive.
