And that will give you 5 conf champions and 3 at large…….if we go to 12 it’s going to be the SEC conference playoffs.

Cahaly from trafalgar recently did a poll,and 53% of Americans are in favor of 8 game playoff. The choices were: 1)keep what we got. 2) 8 team playoff 3) I can’t remember if it was 12 or 16 team playoff

An eight team playoff requires an 11 game season as going past 15 max is not an option. If we did have eight teams: 5 P5 champs, 2 highest ranked G5 champs and one at large. The more at large = more SEC teams which is a hard no for most people

Consider this:
On the conference championship weekend play 3 other games involving the top ranked 6 teams not involved in conference championship games. 8 games total/16 teams. Have the mid tier bowl sponsors sponsor these games. The 8 winners advance to the playoffs. This then creates 7 playoff games that could be sponsored by higher tier bowl sponsors like the New Years 6 games. Could rotate locations between the 4 playoffs/2 semifinals and championship game. That creates 15 bowl/playoff games that should be of more interest to schools and players and maybe reduce opt outs. If we need more bowl games the lower tier bowl sponsors can extend invitations to other teams that don’t make the conference championship or playoff games. If the schools want to play they accept, if they don’t want to play they can decline.

For those that complain that the losers of the conference championship games should still be in the playoffs, I disagree but another option would be to eliminate the confidence championship games as such and seed the same 16 teams (10 power 5 divisional winners and 6 at large bases on rankings) for the 8 first round games. I don’t favor this option but it might help satisfy the SEC loudmouths and ESecPN crowd.
