I've watched the majority of baseball games played this year by viewing them either on TV or mostly on my computer. I've noticed two things frequently occurring :
All season long "right down the middle" first pitches for strikes have not been challenged by our hitters, thus putting them behind in the count. More often than not that first pitch will be the best one to hit of the at bat. Be better prepared to challenge that pitch, as with a 0-1 count the opposing pitcher can then begin throwing his harder-to-hit "specialty pitches".
As was the case with multiple of our batters in yesterday's game, "caught looking" strikeouts took them down. With the sometimes rather extreme variance of "strike zone" boundaries that we've seen used by different home plate umpires all year long, if a pitch appears close to their boundaries, better to give it a try, i.e., "protect the plate" on that possible third strike.
Simple observations by a guy who didn't play/pitch beyond being on my high school team.
