2016 loss to Pitt

Watson threw for 580 yds and 3 tds but still lost. Gallman rushed for 3 tds, still lost. The difference? Deshaun threw 3 pics. Go look at deshauns sophomore season. Several games under 300, 4 games under 200. Don’t get me wrong, Watson is great. I am just trying to point out that turnover played a major role in our losses this past year. Also, Cade isn’t that bad. Last, if that NC st. Kicker would’ve made a chip shot kick, we would’ve never made it to the playoffs.

Watson was a beast. You hit the nail on the head with "never played scared". The wife and I talk about people we would geek out to meet in person. She always has a long list of celebrities' and I only can think of one person. That person is DW4

Clemson lost to Pitt because the Tiger defense could not stop the shuffle pass or whatever that thing is called. But, I do get your point about Cade. The team is not that far off for where it needs to be.

That game had to be the last time a shuffle pass play went for more than -1 against us. BV couldn't quite dial it in during that game but he fixed it forever after. Feels like we've stonewalled everything there since.

We've defended it (and the triple option) so well since BV that teams don't even try it any more. Though I guess with GT not using it any longer we won't see much TO.

I like your analogy and hope to see Cade throw for 580 yards vs. UGA coming out of the gate in 2024 -- win or lose, it will be a harbinger of good times ahead.

We couldnt run the ball to save our life. DW4 threw 70 times.

The passing game was all we had, and you’re gonna throw some picks if you throw the ball that much. I give DW4 a pass for that game. Plus, James Connor was a monster running the ball and we couldn’t stop that dang shovel pass.

Every team we played that season after Pitt tried it ONCE, including Alabama, and all were stuffed.

Deshaun Watson and Cade Klubnik aren't even in the same stratosphere. I'm not saying that to hate on Cade, but anything less would be disrespectful to Deshaun. Go back and watch DW throw the deep ball. It wasn't always perfect, and he did throw more picks in 2016 than we might've liked, but the tradeoff was worth it. That deep ball was legit, and it worked beautifully. Watson proved time and time again that he could throw the long shot accurately enough to make big plays on a regular basis. The consistent vertical threat in the passing game is what enabled that offense to have so much success. The quick strike/big play ability of the Clemson offense from that era was almost impossible to defend.
Now compare that to Cade. You mentioned Watson throwing for 580 yards in that game. Cade averaged only 219 yards per game passing this season and has only managed to throw for over 300 twice in his whole career. Cade's deep ball is virtually nonexistent. Clemson's current offense is one of the worst in the entire FBS in creating big yardage plays. The vertical passing game is nowhere to be found. Clemson's overall offensive struggles have been well documented by now, and the lack of a deep threat or big play ability is the biggest reason why. Again, I'm not trying to slander Cade, and I really hope he can improve. I understand that he shouldn't shoulder all the blame because his offensive line and wide receivers have been just as unimpressive as he has been, if not worse.
I still really hope that Klubnik can improve, but comparing him to Watson is just absurd. Arguing that they are somehow similar because Deshaun threw a lot of interceptions in 2016 is really nonsensical. The 2016 Clemson offense was turnover prone at times, but it was a price worth paying. The interceptions were the price the Tigers paid for having one of the most threatening passing games in the country with Watson having the freedom to air it out. That offense was explosive. That offense made big plays. That offense scored points. That offense could score lots of points against elite defenses. That offense scored at least 35 points on Alabama 2 years in a row. Clemson's current offense doesn't do any of those things. Yes, they are turnover prone, but they don't get back any of the benefits as a tradeoff that the 2016 team got. Again, Deshaun threw picks because he took risks that were worth taking while facilitating a deep passing game. The current offense turns the ball over a lot, but not because of a quarterback taking calculated risks on deep shots. This offense has no deep or explosive passing game to speak of, they just repeatedly fumble the football. Completely different situations.
