1989 Clemson vs. Duke in Durham

At this time of year, begin watching past wins during the last 10-12 years. Never have liked watching losses. Decided to look up close losses that stand out in my memory. Watched this Duke game with Spurrier in his 2nd year there I think? We made so many mistakes in the 2nd half and let Duke hang around. That RB Cuthbert was a load to bring down, had an outstanding day against us. I loved Ford’s teams and his brand of the option game but my heart wouldn’t take it today. We had to score first and often and if we were behind with less than 4 minutes remaining……..lookout!
Can’t remember the year, but today going to lookup the NC State game where we jumped out to a 28-0 lead.

If I remember that Duke game correctly, we had a couple of interceptions where we fumbled the return and gave them field position inside the 35.

I was in a dove field listening to that game. Man I was so pissed. Several of the other hunters were coot fans and I caught the devil.

That Cuthbert from Duke reminded me of the RB from The Citadel that ran over, around and through USuCk just a few years ago!

That would be 1987 vs. NC State. I think it was homecoming. Ford teams always seemed to have one or two inexplicable losses each season in the late 1980s. I still believe that 1989 team was good enough to have played for a national title. In addition to the Duke loss, they also lost to Georgia Tech, and this loss was again, I think, homecoming.
GA Tech gave Clemson fits while Shawn Jones was the QB. The following year, GA Tech would be a split national champion with Colorado. I think they beat Clemson 19-17 in Atlanta (****). I seem to remember Chris Gardocki missed something like a 57 yard field goal with little time left in the game. That 1990 team was also unbelievable good. The 1987-1990 teams were the best Clemson teams I can consciously remember pulling for as a young boy, and they were the best teams I ever watched Clemson have until 2012. was only 3 when the Tigers won it 1981, and I have no memory of it. It wasn’t really until I was 8-years-old, 1986, that I started half way paying attention to college football. Since 1987, I’ve been hooked. Go Tigers!
****Edit: I went back and checked, and I was wrong about the GA Tech score in 1990. It wasn’t 19-17 (GA Tech) but 21-19 (GA Tech). My mistake.

That NC State game was 1987, and yes, pretty sure it was homecoming.
But the OP misremembers, I believe. It was NC State, not Clemson, that jumped out to the big lead, 30-0 at the half.
And that score still stood with only a minute left in the third quarter. Then the Tigers scored on their next four possessions to draw within two at 30-28.
I remember listening to the game on the radio. On our last possession, we were getting near range for a winning field goal. But on a fourth down play, we had an incompletion, and I remember the color commentator (Tim Bourret?) lamenting that the official had gotten in the way, essentially interfering with the pass.
(Now if I could just remember what I had for breakfast yesterday...)
Here's a write-up of the game: https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1987-10-25-8702010794-story.html

Did we go for 2 after any of those 4 TDs

I know coaching philosophy was different 35 years ago, but that would be a pretty bad coaching decision to kick 4 XPs when trailing by 30.

My wife and I were at that game. One of the most frustrating games that I have attended. In addition to the RB Cuthbert, I seem to remember a tight end who wore us out also.

Sounds like the Charlie Whitehurst/Bowden game...

where Duke converted a long wind assisted field goal as time expired to win the game. The Clemson defense never could figure out how to cover the Duke TE.

we always lost at least one game each year that we shouldn't under Coach Ford.
It seemed at the time like this Duke loss was one of those.

It did seem that way, and I must say that Tommy Bowden was noted for losing games we should have won. He had that happen most every year.

That Duke game was a rough one. I remember being married only a year listening to the game on the back porch and not believing we could lose. Spurrier must have surprised and outcoached Danny that day (did not happen often). And Cuthbert must have been one tough son of a gun because Kirkland, McDaniel, McGlockton and that Defense would hit you -- ask Major Harris.

Both the Duke and Ga Tech games that year were disappointing. I read somewhere that during both of those game weeks that NCAA was on campus investigating . May have caused some of that lack of focus

Miserable, rainy day in Clemson

I watched that Duke game at the Upper Deck. The place was almost empty and that game was like a bad dream.
The second half of the ‘87 NC State game was the greatest comeback game I’ve ever attended. That was a good NC State team and we were in position to win at the end. 4th and 5, and Rodney didn’t get the first down. First loss in a season that, up to that point, felt like a national championship run.
