Thoughts on DW zone read and lack of running game...

Sep 26, 2016, 1:05 PM

One of the glaring issues with our offense is DW not keeping the ball in the zone read and beating teams with his legs.... I have seen various videos were the WRs on the side to which DW would keep and run not attempt to block as if they new Gallman was getting the ball no matter what.... I think, and I hope this because the coaching staff is protecting DW. The last four games have not really been in doubt and the way that they have gone early has dictated that there is no need to risk DW. If that is the case, I think we are going to see DW running a true read option...keeping the ball more against UL, when it dictates, and it is going to open up the run game for Gallman as well as open up the passing game.

Thoughts?

As well as LJ runs that read play I'd say UL knows what's coming.

There are 3 2 4 basic options in Clemson's zone read game.

Sep 26, 2016, 1:21 PM

1. QB hands off to the RB or WR.
2. QB keeps.
3. QB passes.

It is Clemson's [and others] version of the triple-quad option, so I 'magine if you're seeing WRs not blocking, they are running their particular route tree - based on their keys & what the defense is showing.

You may be right and the O staff is trying to "polish" some things, as Chad used to say, "we're going to run 3 or 4 things until we get them right and then we're going to run them again".

I agree... I just think the biggest thing missing on offense has been DW rushing the ball... it is fair to say that we have not been as dynamic this yr.... And I believe this has been intentionally done to limit unnecessary hits on DW. I also believe this is going to change this week... I expect to see us really open up the offense against UL... It is going to be a tough game, but I am very confident we will win... I think this will be a shootout but... We have a better D and DV will be rocking! We will win the TO battle and that will be the difference

It's clear DW4 is asked not to keep on purpose

I've always thought we've had a zone read that we use instead of straight handoff and a true zone read where the QB actually does read the outside defender. I don't have a problem with this. I don't want "The Franchise" getting beat up running a true zone read on every play. Pick and choose when to do it. In the big games though, you can expect DW4 to run more of the true zone read all the time. He'll likely have 20 rushes this game between QB scrambles, zone reads and QB leads.

You were REALLY worried we were going to lose that game? And, actually the 4q proves my point as DW made several plays running the ball to pull away... That game was frustrating, but even at 13-10 did I think the game was in doubt!

As frustrating as that game was, never did I think "wow we might lose this game."

We will see DW run a little more this game, and if he does successfully, gallman will have 100+ yards in the second half. That's how we operated at the end of last year in those huge games. DW would gas the defense and then the train would run all over them second half! Go tigers baby!

I didn't think would lose either, but had the non-fumble

fumble been called correctly, we'd have been down 17-13.
